JOINT BUDDHA DAY (VESAK) CELEBRATIONS 1997 - BE 2541
ORGANISED BY THE SRI LANKAN SANGHA SABHA IN GREAT BRITAIN
IN ASSOCIATION WITH ALL BUDDHIST COMMUNITIES IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

The celebrations will comprise talks by prominent Buddhist personalities,
followed by a programme of Buddhist cultural events presented by
different nationalities in the UK.
Participants at the celebrations will include representatives of clergy
and laity of all Sects and Traditions of Buddhism from various
nationalities resident in the country, Diplomatic Representatives of
Buddhist countries, local civic and Interfaith Organisations in the UK.
ALL ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO ATTEND.
A detailed programme will be made available at the door. Please take your
seats by 2.00pm. as seating is limited and will be on a first come,
first served basis.

BUDDHA DAY (VESAK) which commemorates the Birth, Enlightenment, and the
Parinibbana of the Buddha, will be celebrated at the London Buddhist
Vihara, Dharmapala Building, The Avenue, Chiswick , London W4 1UD on
SUNDAY, 18TH MAY
PROGRAMME
9.00AM Hoisting the Buddhist Flag, by H.E. the High Commissioner
for Sri Lanka in the United Kingdom Mr. S. K.
Wickramasinghe.
9.15 Administering Eight Precepts and Admonition (anusasana)
by Most Venerable Pandith M. Vajiragnana, Chief
Sangha Nayake of Great Britain.
9.20 Buddha Vandana (Paying homage to the Buddha) by Ven. T.
Bandula.
9.30 Meditation led by Ven. Bhikkhu Seevali.
10.00 Tea will be served.
10.15 “Teaching methods of the Buddha” by Ven. B. Seelawimala.
11.15 Buddhapuja.
11.30 Dana offering to Venerable monks, Upasakas and Upasikas
observing Eight Precepts.
1.15PM “Under the Bodhi Tree” by Ven. Lodro Thaye
2.15 “The Buddha as a communicator” by Prof. Ratna Wijetunga,
Professor, Department of Sinhala, SOAS,
University of London.
3.00 Tea will be served.
3.30 “How Buddha enlightenment influenced world thinking” by
Mr. Sumana Ratnayake,
Research Scholar, Wolfson College, Oxford
University.
4.30 “Battle with Mara” by Most Ven. Dr. M. Vajiragnana,
Chief Sangha Nayake of Great Britain.
5.30 Sinhala Sermon
6.00 Paritta Chanting and Punyanumodana.

CHILDREN’S VESAK PROGRAMME
Saturday, 17th May
All parents are invited to bring their children to a special programme to
be celebrated on Saturday 17th May from 9.00 am-1.00pm. The programme
will include:
- Observing Eight Precepts
- Sermon for children: Prince Siddhartha
- Pirith
- Jataka Stories
- Jayamangala
- Bhakti-gee (devotional songs)
- Buddha Puja
- Dana
