Wimal Weerawansa made JVP a popular political party, without him JVP will loose its popularity.
By Charles.S.Perera
Wimal Weerawanse is the face of JVP, without him the JVP has lost a part of its living force. JVP's popular existence was partly if not wholly due to its Propaganda Secretary. Lal Kantha and Somawansa Amarasinghe are symbols of the JVP's frightening past. Wimal Weerawance is the modern forward looking democrat. He had a convincing style of speech a more friendly accommodating way with the popular masses. Somawansa Amarasinghe is in fact the unknown element of the party, a more out of place political thinker of the JVP. Eclipse of Weerawansa from the JVP, is the eclipse of JVP. It was evident from what was going on in different press statements that was being issued to the press from time to time by the JVP stalwarts, Somawansa Amarasinghe, Tilvin Silva, Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Lalkantha, that the JVP was going to burst from the seams of the jacket of its political discipline. The old Marxism does not exist any more. The Marxism as a political system started with an eye for the world revolution of the proletariat, that never happened. From then itself it was evident that Marxism would have a difficult existence, in a capitalist world given to luxury and decadence. It is the way with life, people welcome pleasure knowing very well that pain is soon to follow. The Capitalist way of life is exiting and imbued with wine, women and wealth. The people get attached to ,this superficiality of capitalism, and seek it in preference to more profound values of Socialism. The Marxists should therefore be more open, without trying to imprison themselves in rigid discipline. Wimal Weerawansa understood this necessity to follow the socialist path differently, knowing the reality of the political forces it has to compete with. To-day Marxism cannot progress, unless it change to suit the thinking of the ordinary masses. People like Lalkantha may be able to draw the working class militants to manifest against the government demanding more financial concessions, but it frightens the ordinary people who have nothing to gain from the demands of the trade unions. -Full Story- (The LankaWeb - 06/04/08)

GL battles Ranil on GSP+
The cabinet on Wednesday dwelled into the intricacies of the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP+) after International Trade Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris appraised the ministers on the looming dangers associated with non-securing its extension. Minister Peiris told the cabinet that both the LTTE and the opposition are involved in a sinister campaign to scuttle Sri Lankas prospects of securing GSP+. He elaborated to the ministers that the United National Party (UNP) and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe had sent a letter to European Commissioner, External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, stating that an amendment to the Constitution was necessary to implement the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and that he would support the government to get the necessary two-thirds majority to amend the Constitution. In the letter, Wickremesinghe had also said that although Sri Lanka had passed legislations in October 2007, they were inadequate and insufficient. Minister Peiris also disclosed to the cabinet of ministers that a similar letter had been handed over to 27 members of the House of Lords by LTTE activists, of which a copy is in the possession of the Sri Lankan High Commissioner in the United Kingdom. The LTTE had, in its letter, urged the members of the House of Lords to use their influence to suspend the GSP+. -Full Story- (nation.lk - 06/04/08)

LTTE losing control of Madu area, says Army Chief
B. Muralidhar Reddy JAFFNA: Sri Lankas Army Chief has claimed that the shifting of of the statue of Our Lady by priests of the Madu Church under LTTE pressure, was an indication that the Tigers had lost control of the area. Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka told the state-owned Daily News: They [the priests] took away the statue as they were under LTTE pressure. According to the him, the statue was taken to Vellankulam, some 20 km north of Mannar, by the priests on Thursday evening under LTTE pressure. The Defense Ministry said that hardcore LTTE cadres were dominating the church after the priests had vacated it. Lt. Gen. Fonseka said that though ground troops had surrounded the Madhu church, they did not even return the mortar fire directed at them by LTTE men since they did not want to damage the church. -Full Story- (The Hindu - 06/04/08)

26 killed in Lanka clashes as LTTE captures Mannar church
New Delhi, April 5, IRNA Sri Lanka-LTTE-Clashes At least 24 Tamil Tigers and two soldiers were killed in fierce clashes while a rebel training base was destroyed by Air Force jets on Friday in embattled northern Sri Lanka, where the guerrillas have occupied a historic church, the military said. Three LTTE men who surrendered to Sri Lankan Army on Thursday have revealed that three bands of the Tiger cadres are presently occupying the premises of the 400 year old Madhu church in northwestern Mannar, Doordarshan news website reported here quoting the Sri Lankan Defence Ministry. Defence sources in the rebel stronghold of Wanni said LTTE rebels have ordered the priests in the church to leave the premises with immediate effect. The priests have shifted the sacred statue of 'Our Lady of Madhu' from the church apprehending escalation of the conflict, the sources said adding, civilians also started to flee the area. "Earlier, LTTE had positioned its heavy mortar and artillery guns at close range to the church in order to take cover from the civilian refugees at the church," they said. The Defence Ministry said the sacred area has been declared a "no-war zone" and that Sri Lankan security forces have spared it from military offensive. However, the LTTE on Thursday denied positioning arms around the church and accused the troops of initiating clashes within its premises. -Full Story- (irna.ir/ - 06/04/08)

15 Tigers, soldier die in fresh fighting
By BHARATHA MALLAWARACHI Colombo, April 5: Scattered battles between government troops and Tamil Tiger separatists across Sri Lankas embattled north killed 15 rebels and one soldier, the military said on Saturday. Reports of fighting have increased in recent months amid government promises to capture the rebels de facto state in the north and crush the group by the end of the year. But diplomats and other observers say the Army is facing more resistance than it had expected. A defence ministry official said the latest round of battles took place on Friday near the front lines that separate government-controlled territory and rebel territory in the north. He spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to the media. -Full Story- (asianage.com - 06/04/08)

Pakistan Steps Up And Passes The Ammunition
April 5, 2008: Sri Lanka has asked Pakistan to quickly ship them $25 million worth of mortar shells. The Sri Lankan Army has been increasing the number of attacks it makes on LTTE rebel gunmen in the northern part of the island. Troops have developed effective tactics that depend a lot on mortar fire. This has depleted stocks of mortar shells. Pakistan has been a source of 60mm, 81mm and 120mm mortar shells for several years. So far, Sri Lanka has purchased $50 million worth of military gear from Pakistan (including radios, grenades, and a few other items, but mostly mortar shells). The new order is for $25 million, and Pakistan is taking the ammo from its war reserves so that it can ship several tons of shells immediately.-Full Story- (strategypage.com - 06/04/08)

Sri Lanka-Iran deal in offing
Saturday, April 05, 2008 - ?2005 IranMania.com LONDON, April 5 (IranMania) - Sri Lanka is seeking to renew its long-term crude oil supply contract with Iran and wrap up refinery financing this week in Tehran, PressTV reported. Treasury Secretary P. B. Jayasundera and Ashantha de Mel, chairman of the state-oil refiner Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, are to hold talks with Iranian government and oil industry officials over the weekend. De Mel told the New York-based Left Business Observer (LBO) that during his visit the CPC will renew its contract to buy crude oil from Iran, the island's main supplier of crude. "We want to sign an agreement to buy crude for the next one year because the existing contract has expired and we need to re-sign it." They will also discuss plans to double the capacity at the 50,000 barrels per day CPC refinery at Sapugaskanda, north of Colombo, which can now refine only about half the island's requirement. Iran has promised to help modernize the refinery with funding and technical expertise. -Full Story- (iranmania.com - 06/04/08)

Sri Lanka says 16 killed in fresh fighting
COLOMBO (AFP) - At least 15 Tamil Tiger fighters and one soldier died as Sri Lankan security forces waged a major offensive against the rebels in the north of the island, defence officials said on Saturday. Sri Lankan troops backed by artillery fire attacked rebel positions in the districts of Mannar, Vavuniya and Weli Oya, Sri Lankan defence officials said. All 16 were killed in clashes on Friday but the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) denied in a statement that any guerrillas died and said they beat back a fresh onslaught from their territory. The latest defence ministry casualty toll brings to at least 2,631 the number of rebels said to have been killed by security forces since January. -Full Story- (yahoo - 06/04/08)

FOREIGN MINISTER BOGOLLAGAMA TELLS BBC TELIVISION THAT HE IS OPTIMISTIC NOW DEMOCRACY WILL BE ESTABLISHED AFTER DEFEATING FASCISM IN THE NORTH
By Walter Jayawardhana
Projecting on their past achievement Sri Lankas Minister for Foreign Affairs said before long they would wipe out Fascism from the island nations Northern Province an re-establish democratic institutions there. Sri Lankas visiting Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama told British Broadcasting Corporations Asia Today Television Program in London that projecting on the past achievements starting from the flushing out terrorists from the island nations sprawling Eastern Province and re-establishing democratic institutions there he could now be optimistic of cleaning the North also of the terrorists and achieving their paramount goal of establishing a pluralistic society by defeating Fascism. Replying the presenter of the program Nick Gowing the Foreign Minister said Sri Lanka would never enjoy body counts of children whom the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) have armed but has opened the entry points of their areas to come and seek protection from the Sri Lankan armed forces and churches passing the so-called borders. we want to reach to the young people who have been captivated and also been subjugated by the Tigers and tell them that time has come for them to leave, the Foreign Minister emphatically stated. Many have responded, he enthused. The following are some excerpts from the TV interview: -Full Story- (The LankaWeb - 05/04/08)

SLMC Smashed the Multiethnic UNP Votebase
Dilrook Kannangara
Whoever said that the UNP lost the support of Tamils and Sinhalese in the East owing to its tie-up with the SLMC is correct. Sri Lanka Muslim (emphasis on a race) Congress by definition is a racial political party as much as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil (emphasis on a race) Elam and Sinhala (emphasis on a race) Urumaya. SLMC has turned into an ultra racist extremist and separatist party under the leadership of its present unfortunate leader. UNP voters cannot be fooled any further that the SLMC will not be given the Chief Minister post as it is public news now. No Sinhala and Tamil voter of right mind will vote for the UNP at the EP election now. The multiethnic UNP votebase was smashed by the SLMC just like the UNPers smashing pots and pans! This is the reality. The purported sacrifice of the parliamentary seat by the SLMC leader and his close allies is not a sacrifice at all. None of them was elected by the people in the first place! All of them came from the list and Muslim voters in the East rejected them in 2004. As a result not only Tamils and Sinhalese but also a sizable number of Muslim UNP voters are going to defect. This was explained by the UNP stalwart Abdul Cader, MP recently. UNP simply became a toilet paper yet again in the hands of separatists. -Full Story- (The LankaWeb - 05/04/08)

Facts versus false allegations regarding targeting of civilians
Secretariat for Coordinating the Peace Process (SCOPP)
04 April 2008 The Sri Lankan government recognizes that in some areas protection of Human Rights needs to be strengthened, and it has sought assistance in such areas. Unfortunately such requests have often been ignored, whilst the whole debate has turned into a no holds barred attack in which every possible allegation is flung at the government and its agencies. This confrontational attitude does not help to ensure improvement where this is necessary. In a range of falsehoods and exaggerations, perhaps the most insidious is the claim that the Sri Lankan armed forces deliberately target civilians. It would seem however from the summary of allegations against Sri Lanka submitted by the usual NGOs that only two submissions made this claim. One of these is the notoriously selective Human Rights Watch, which has failed to respond to detailed refutation of allegations in this respect -Full Story- (The LankaWeb - 05/04/08)

"Against violent oppression, violent resistance is moral"
Interview Courtesy Afrique-Asie,
Reputed academic, author of "Fidel's Ethics of Violence", Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka is today the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in Geneva. He fervently defends the policy of his government against the Tamil Tigers, the secessionists of the North-East whom he describes as "Fanatics". Interviewed by Juliette Perrier in Geneva What do you mean by "Ethics of Violence"? Could a violent action be moral? By "ethics of violence", I mean a conception of the world and a code of conduct which governs the use of violence. What are the taboos? When is the violence allowed and against whom is it used? These are the questions which are linked with an "ethics of violence". -Full Story- (The LankaWeb - 05/04/08)

'There is no military solution': Go tell that to NATO
by Durand Appuhamy
I might also add "Go tell that to President Sarkozy of France" for, he will be sending additional French troops to Afganistan soon! Every conflict has a solution however long it takes. That end, is the very end of the conflict itself. The World wars, the Korean war, the Vietnam war, the Vietnamese war against Cambodia's Pol Pot, the Peruvian war against the Sandanista did have the end of defeat for the enemy and was followed by the restoration of peace. Why prevent Sri Lanka from following a similar course especially when the government, the majority of citizens and the soldiers are yearning for the defeat the LTTE and the dawn of peace in the country? Can our NGO bosses justify the invasion of northern Iraq by Turkey, a member of NATO, with NATO supplied arms and kill Kurds if there was no military solution to their problems? If there is no military solution why is NATO fighting in Afganistan even after Al Queda extended an invitation to talk peace? If there is no military solution why are the allied forces fighting in Iraq at enormous cost in men, material and money? It is not a matter of friendly war games in these two countries. -Full Story- (The Island - 05/04/08)

News distortions by Western Media
Man should never act as low as CNN and BBC

  • The US-based Cable News Network (CNN) posted a picture showing a bunch of people running in front of a military vehicle on the street of Lhasa. However, Chinese netizens found that the right side of the original picture, which was cropped out by CNN, shows some rioters throwing stones at the vehicle. But they cut off the images that can fully reflect the rioters. The flying stones, burning motorcycles and insane mobsters throwing stones are still visible from the original picture.

  • On March 17, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) released a picture on its website showing Chinese riot police officers helping medical staff carry a wounded person into an ambulance. The caption on the website said military crackdown, hundreds Tibetans were killed in its coverage to distort the truth.

  • On Marth 18, the German newspaper Berlin Morgenpost posted a picture on its website in which police in Lhasa rescued a young man of Han nationality assaulted by rioters. But the caption distorted the fact as "insurrectionist taken away by police." -Full Story- (bbs.chinadaily.com.cn - 30/03/08)
