UNP VICTORY IS NOT A MANDATE FOR, CONCESSIONS TO TERRORISTS.
NOR TOWARDS A DIVISION OF THE NATION.

In a difficult political climate, the leader of the previous opposition has been elected to Parliament as the leader of the winning party and the unenviable task of Administering a Nation compounded with socio-economic problems. While good wishes go out to him he should bear in mind that the mandate given to him by the people of Sri Lanka does not include any concessions to terrorists and least of all de-proscription which is an International matter where the response from other Nations not already in support is gaining momentum as recent decisions taken by countries such as Switzerland and others indicate, nor any lifting of bans and granting any hopes of secession by way of interim autonomy in response to LTTE demands.

The New Administration does not have to look back too far when considering the LTTE attrocities which has taken the lives of past leaders which included a former Prime Minister of India and a President of Sri Lanka together with the many other prominent personalities assasinated by the LTTE both in political and military capacities notwithstanding the empathy shown by them towards the LTTE during their tenure and could easily be repeated in the case of the present leadership, and it would be foolhardy on the part of any Administration to believe that it could accomplish permanent peace through negotiation even though this appears to be the rig aht solution which should be considered as an option only if there is a laying down of arms and denouncement of the ambit of the LTTE towards secession and Eelam.

There is a wave of national opinion currently floating in the minds of many analysts that the the real winner in the recently concluded Election was Prabakharan of the LTTE who together with his spokesman and theoretician sidekick Anton Balasingham are claiming victory for their cause in the hope that the LTTE will eventually make a pawn of the UNP in the manner whereby they will acheive all their projected goals which includes de-proscription and the lifting of the ban imposed on them. This is a real danger to the Nation's integrity which would project renewed aspirations by the LTTE who are cornered, battered economically and militarily and are on the run and literally are caged tigers who are at their most dangerous when cornered. The wrath of an entire nation could descend upon anyone whose ambitions reach beyond the realm of the unitary status of Sri Lanka through unsolicited manouverings lending no credence to the will of the people.

It seems be a natural order in the game of politics that Newly elected Administrations tend to undo most of what previous Administrations have set in place often with disastrous consequences but in the case of the Sri Lankan political process, mercifully there stands a guardian angel appointed through the Constitution, the President who has the right to accept or reject any decisions which may prove adverse to the Nation and the Sinhala Majority whose interests logically take pride of place while the needs of minorities too need to be considered though not through granting secession to forces bent upon dividing Sovereign Sri Lanka!

This indeed is a testing time for both the President and the new Administration who should pool their resources and determination to strengthen National Unity while focusing on Nation Building for the Sri Lankan People who have voted for the betterment of their lives, opportunities and living standards enjoyed only by some when there are countless others who also deserve good living which cannot be accomplished when terror is still capable of rearing its ugly head through the evil forces still loose in the darker recesses of Sri Lanka which need to be corraled and eliminated.

Standoffs and clashings of heads on the issues facing the Nation of Sri Lanka which are likely to surface in the interim would only give way to a weakening of its infrastructure which according to the elected party in all of their political platforms, was more than visible and needed redress so this is their opportunity to put their money where their mouths are while sorting out priorities!
