The President's Vision Displays A Genuine Concern For The Future Of The Nation.

The ongoing differences of opinion between the President and Prime Minister over the Cease Fire and The Peace Process does not augur well for National Unity nor the well being of the Sinhala Nation as it projects a rather pathetic image of a Political Party unsure of its policies as it has not unified the collective opinion of the entire Nation due to the many doubts about the movements of the LTTE since the inception of the Peace Process.

It is fast becoming obvious that under the very nose of the Sri Lankan Government, Tamil Tiger guerrillas are using an ongoing cease-fire to set up a mock judicial , and prison system, their own financial institutions, the stockpiling of weapons and ammunition while forcibly recruitng child soldiers as observed by the International Red Cross and many Foreign Aid Agencies, and the incessant demand for Troop pullouts in strategic land areas as well as in Naval Domains and hence the concerns of the President that UNF posturing with the Blessings of its LTTE sympathetic leader is likely to lead the Nation into further turmoil and insecurity and a loss of the Nations Sovereign and Territorial in granting too many concessions to the LTTE . In addressing the Nation on Friday she has asserted her unwillingness to compromise the future of Sri Lanka and that she would stand firm against any Government Policy which is not seen as being in the best interests of the Nation and would not hesitate to use her executive power which seemingly has the Administration worried.

Maintaining vehemently that the Sovereignty of Sri Lanka was threatened she has forcefully indicated that she is ready to use her executive powers to confront and negate any peace accord that divided the Nation on an ethnic basis and stopped short of proclaiming a willingness to dissolve Parliament and order new elections. In her address to the Nation she was quoted as saying "I will not hesitate for a moment to exercise the executive powers vested in me to prevent the dismemberment of this country and to avert any serious dangers that the country may be called upon to face" and has assured the Sinhala Nation of her resolve to stand firm by her convictions in its best interests and in keeping with her oath of office as Chief Executive Officer of the Nation.

A Nation in a quandry and shrouded in uncertainty at what the future may hold for its generations to come, must surely take heart that there indeed is a concerned matriarch of Sri Lanka past whom the UNF Government so intent in their conciliations to the LTTE cannot manouver at will as indicated by the profound sounding Prof. G.L. Peiris that there is a "Sword of Damoclese" hanging over their heads yet bragging about the chances of the UNP securing a two thirds majority tantamount to hollow rhetoric as applied to reality and displaying his awe of the enigmatic Madam President.

The present concerns of the Nation and all opposition factions entail an incredulous lowering of the guard in the Northern and Eastern Regions of Sri Lanka where many minorities in particular the Muslim Communities feel threatened and intimidated by the LTTE who continue their march towards secession and when the President chooses to say that "The peace we all strive for, should be attained within a framework that would ensure equal rights and protect democratic freedoms for all communities living in this country," there is little doubt what the inference is and one which the Wickremasinghe Administration chooses to be indifferent to in maintaining that a return to normalcy could be attained through a deproscription of the LTTE and permitting its infiltration into strategic areas.

The President being aware of the economic harm another General Election might do to the Nation has indicated an unwillingness to exercise this option and has stopped short of saying that her executive authority will be used in the event that the meanderings of the UNF Administration would indeed compromise the well being of the Nation and in doing so has cast great doubts in the minds of many within the UNF about their political futures in a speculated worse case scenario and the dissolution of Parliament but have only themselves to blame in such an event as their credibilities are fast dissapearing through mixed up priorities which provide leverage to LTTE needs rather than the needs of the Sinhala Nation.
