Sir James Emerson Tennent

Sir James Emerson Tennent, K.C.S. L.L.D, born in 1804 to an illustrious Irish family was an administrator and historian of the 19th Century. As a student he wrote a book - “ A picture of Greece”- exhibiting his literary interest in History. After returning from a tour in Greece in 1825 he was called to the Bar at Lincoln’s Inn in 1831. Emerson Tennent was recruited and appointed to the covertus post of Colonial Secretary in government in Ceylon in 1845, along with Sir Antony Oliphant, the Chief Justice and Rt. Rev. Dr. Chapman, the Bishop of Colombo. He was elected President of The Royal Asiatic Society Ceylon Branch in 1846.

From the day he arrived in ‘Ceylon’ he collected and collated all the information he could gather of the Island , and produced several books, the most important of which was titled CEYLON, an account of the Ceylon’s ‘Physical, Historical and Topographical, with notices of its Natural History, Antiquities and Productions’ in two volumes in 1859.

Sir James Emerson Tennent was honoured for his erudite scholarship by being elected a Fellow of The Royal Society in 1862 for his literary contributions. He passed away on 6 March 1869.

His scholarly contribution ‘Ceylon- an account of the Island’- ran into three editions, published by Longman, Green, Longman and Roberts in 1860. We are serialising selected topics of Sir James Tennent’s account of Sri Lanka as an Internet version.
