MAHANAYAKE AND POLITICS
Another news web site carries a lead story according to which the Mahanayake has met key UNP politicians and told them that he predicts the victory of the Opposition Alliance and that he wanted Ranil to arrange for regular talks with him on matters of state.
Our respected Mahanaykes have always been dragged into election politics and they have, without restraint, allowed themselves to be dragged into making statements on behalf of one party or the other.
Lacking in the knowledge and experience required to make political judgements, they have often got into embarassing situations exposing themselves to a positon of ridicule.
To them I quote from "The Questions of Milinda": "....So, your majesty, it is the business of the princes of this earth to know all about elephants, horses,chariots,bows,edicts,and seals, and to be well versed in the textbooks of statecraft, in its traditions and custom, and to lead people into battle...The Tathagatha therefore urged the monks to devote themselves to their own work, and not that of others...."
