The Island - 2nd March 1998

Navy yesterday completed the operation to salvage the two infantry combat vehicles [ICVs] and other armaments in SLNS Pabbatha sunk off Point Pedro two weeks ago. Two Chinese built T-86 ICVs of the Third Regiment of the Armoured Corps were salvaged along with the main armaments of the vessel and a large quantity of weapons, military sources said last night.

"ICVs have not been damaged," sources said. Military sources said that both ICVs can be operational within two weeks. Eight Black Sea Tigers died in the suicide attack on SLNS Pabbatha one of the landing craft acquired by Navy more than ten years ago.

The second ICV had been salvaged yesterday at 6.45 p.m.

The operation was launched to salvage the arms, ICVs and other equipment within hours after Sea Tigers blasted SLNS Pabbatha.

Navy headquarters spokesman said, that Navy divers played a crucial role in salvaging the ICVs and other equipment." Almost all the weapons on board SLNS Pabbatha had been salvaged," sources said.
