End of End-Game. Now Rise-up to the Challenge NOW!
Posted on May 16th, 2009

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Prof. Hudson McLean

The thirty year terrorism, fear, destruction is finally coming to an end, due to remarkable stubborn, dedicated, focused Leadership of one man, the President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa has achieved what other leaders in USA, UK, Russia, India, Pakistan, Affghanistan, are dreaming about, the Wiping Out of Terrorism!

Now that the Island of Sri Lanka is on the verge of reclaim of all illegally squatted land from Tamil Tiger LTTE terrorists, the next stage of the Programme of Recovery should start with immediate effect. NOW!

It cannot be left without emphasizing that the Island will require the SLDF to give continuous vigilance and protection.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Therefore the SLDF must be well motivated and well taken care of, in the continuounce of their tenure and beyond.

Apart from their military duties, the soldiers should be deployed to support civilian engineers and construction workers, to develop the recontruction and rehabilitation.

These are dedicated men who have performed under command and good leadership, and they should be kept fully occupied in a dual role, otherwise, the trained soldier will turn out to be a wounded Tiger. Along with the military pay, they should be directed & trainedƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  towards a civilian, commercial structure, motivated by success-related incentive schemes.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  This could be running foreign owned investment schemes, construction, irrigation, farming, management, educational and vocational welfare.

The SLDF must set an example to the Tamil civilians in the North that the Dual-Role of the SLDF shall be to assist the Tamil brethren to settle down to a normal civilian life, under the protective eyes of the SLDF.

Part of the integration must include a proportional migration of Sinhala, Muslim and other citizens of Sri Lanka to be encouraged to settle down in the North. The North should be classified as the “North of Opportunity”!

There can be No-Ghetto building in any area, leading to a path to discrimination by isolation.

This migration and integration must be supported by friendly countries such as China, Pakistan, Russia, Singapore, India, Australia, Canada and indeed the USA and the EU, in both human resources, grants and funding.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  The self-development, without goverrnment intervention, should be the key.

Sri Lanka should now follow the “Singapore Model”, albeit 40 years too late.

Raising interest free soft loans and grants tied to various development tied-schemes to generate employment, creation of rehabilitation programmes to serve the welfare of the incapacitated patriotic Defence Forces, should be a Top Priority.

Information & Communications Technology should be subsidized or Free, with Fast Broadband Access available throughout the Island.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  There are many global sponsors who are willing to snap-up this opportunity, on a commercial programme.

Such activity requires a carefully planned, professionally implemented Press & Public Relations programme to continuously increase the awareness within the global audience.

Application stories, success stories, other opportunities available, to the investors and community at large should be created on a non-stop basis, to generate interest.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

As I have mentioned earlier, SLG has no professional spin doctors. The Information culture is woefully inadequate.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  The efforts or the non-efforts made by the likes of Keheliya Rambukwella is not picture-perfect.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Not TV friendly.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Not photogenic. The TV presentations are absolutely pedestrian to say the least.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Such activity only creates a negative image.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Rambukwella should appoint a graceful photogenic spokesman with a natural friendly smile. This applies to Udaya Nanayakkara as well.

There are excellent, good-looking, well spoken men & women in Sri Lanka TV who should be groomed to deliver quality, audience-friendly presentations.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Furthermore, there are many Sri Lankan who have acquired a decent English accent, to combat the negative image delivered globally by the current government personalities.

Today, Communications is KING!

Now its upto the three Rajapaksa brothers who are currently standing proud on the pulpit, to structure and orchestrate a Business Plan and a Reconstruction Operational Model to be presented to the world leadership and the Sri Lankan Diaspora.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

Mouth watering opportunities of skilled low cost labour,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  tax-free incentives in Tax Free Zones, Central Logistical Location, Smooth Seamless Infrastructure (cut-out the crap bureaucracy), Sun, Sea, now Safe & Sound, History, abundance of recreational facilities, the Food Culture, and lovely friendly people.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  What more does one want?

This is another war, fought with, not guns or missiles, but with Airwaves and polished skills in Communications Technology.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Its a different ball-game where human empathy is needed to reach the human mindset, to reach for the pen or the Internet to make a donation transfer.

Once again, the President can stand proud to announce that HE could raise the meagre US$ 1.9 billionƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  being applied to the World Bank – IMF, now being scrutinized under threats of blackmail by the USA and UK, that Sri Lanka can generate much more funds in goodwill from friends, neighbours and the Diaspora.

    Dear Prof,
You are very right. If we had a better presenters the war would have had the support of many more countries. Sri Lanka must know in future to present their case better, especially the humanitarian efforts taken by the forces should have been available in more English versions. The rebuttals should have been immediate to counteract LTTE propaganda. I must admit it got better during the last few days. Sir, your efforts are much appreciated.

I admire your writings very much. I like you style, direct and honest.
I want to correct you on very few misinformation or misunderstandings. Do not believe me, do more research and find out the truth.
    1. Sarath Fonseka is NOT a Catholic. This is my personal knowledge.
    2. Singapore is NOT the model for Sri Lanka. Taking Singapore and the its big liar Lee Kuan Yew as mentor, made many countries miserable. I lived in Singapore for 15 years. It flourished by producing lethal weapons, even cluster bombs. Factories are everywhere. Please read Lee’s book on Sri Lanka. As a person passionate about Sri Lanka , you will very very angry how cleverly he manipulated lies to discredit Sri Lanka. Singapore paid hefty amount of money to every ports minister of Sri Lanka to avoid building a port at Hambantota.
Singapore is a migrant society, mostly arrogant Chinese taking over Malay land and discriminating them to the fullest. If they do not speak English there is no common language to work and understand each other. They cannot say that land belong to their forefathers. But now they are promoting Mandarin.
With 75% Sinhalese, if Sri Lankans do not protect the language how can it survive? Buddha has clearly shown the proper way of living. Prospering by producing arms is not for us.( Is it OK to Catholics ?, I question you)
However, Singapore is a model for law and order. I accept that fully. Sri Lanka can learn there. Any one who talks of revolution will be arrested under Internal Security Act and Jailed if not killed. We too need such laws.

    Dear Professor,
I do agree with you. While some may try to brush off you blunt but straightforward views, I’m sure there’d be many of our top professionals in the private sector who would be jolted into reality and into taking positive action in the right direction. I shall make it a point to send this around to some of the top people I know here and let’s see what happens in the next few days … I assure you we certainly are not short of talent to put us back on track and where we rightfully ought to be – “Sri Lanka definitely can and will, that’s for sure”. Thanks Professor Hudson, your article is indeed a valuable contribution.
