PRESIDENT RAJAPAKSA SAYS THE WORLD SHOULD NOT ALLOW TERRORISM TO RAISE ITS HEAD ADDRESSING NAM SUMMIT IN EGYPT

President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing 117 nations participating in the Non Aligned Nations summit in Egypt said under no circumstances the world should allow terrorism to raise its head.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ This is the largest international summit President Rajapaksa is participating after his troops ended a thirty yer long insurgency by one of the most ruthless terrorist groups in the world , the Tamil Tigers.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ He further added addressing the summit held in Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt, today (July 15) at the Maritim Congress Center that the whole world should be united to work responsibly for peace. He said the terrorist movement his country was able to eradicate had no political intentions which could be either justified or conclusive and clear.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ He said while eradicating terrorism the world should determine on development while preserving the environment.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ He thanked Sri LankaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s non-aligned friends for rallying round Sri Lanka during its most difficulte times during recent times.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The President of Cuba handed over the chairmanship of NAM to President Hosni Mubarak of Britain.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Sri Lanka government said ,ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚The members of NAM will also discuss the need to combat terrorism worldwide which safeguarding national sovereignty from outside pressure.

ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Sri LankaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s President has a very busy schedule today with several bilateral meetings, scheduled on the sidelines of the NAM Summit. Among them is a meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki moon. Later today where the focus is expected to be Sri LankaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s progress in widening democracy after the defeat of the LTTE, the conditions of the IDPs in the North and the governmentƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s plans to re-settle and rehabilitate them in 180days and the assistance that UN can give in the re-settlement and rehabilitation process.

President Rajapaksa is also met for bilateral talks with the President of Serbia, Boris Tadic and the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Syed Gilam, and the United Nations Secretary General Ban-ki Moon.
