“Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon chastised the Government of Sri Lanka last week after Tamil journalist J.S. Tissainayagam was handed a lengthy prison term for articles printed in the North Eastern Magazine in 2006 and 2007″, you said.

That statement had an insular taste of hypocrisy and I wondered whether the Minister would have chastised Sri Lanka if the journalist would have been a Sinhalese or a Muslim or  a Burgher.  I have my doubts.

This Tamil journalist was tried in High Court for aiding and abetting the Tamil Tiger terrorists challenging the Prevention of Terrorism Act.  His magazine was funded by the Tamil Tigers and he blatantly went after the Sri Lankan Government criticizing it for being at war with the Tamil Tigers.  He had his own lawyer defending him and he now has his right to appeal this judgment.

So Cannon from a country that had invoked its War Measures Act in October 1970 which deprived press freedom, is now trying to preach to Sri Lanka, “We are Holier than Thou”, doesn’t somehow read right.   This blatantly silly.

I wonder what the Conservatives are up to now!  Are they after the block Tamil votes in the GTA?
