The decision of the people of the Southern Province given by an overwhelming majority has given a decisive message to the international community and other elements ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-attempting to build an incorrect vision of the governmentƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ said President Mahinda Rajapaksa issuing a message immediately after the final election results were issued.

The President simply called the overwhelming majority is a ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-victory of the people who love the motherland.ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚

President Rajapaksa has said that the overwhelming majority received by the Freedom Alliance from the South is a victory of the people who love the motherland.

In a message, the President invited the entire nation to join in the supreme task of building a noble motherland. He reminisced how the people of the South extended a vital contribution for his victory at the 2005 Presidential polls. A victory of more than a two thirds majority handed down to the Freedom Alliance clearly consolidates the confidence the people have placed in the Government. It is also a clear re-endorsement of the Mahinda Chintana, the manifesto endorsed by the people at the last Presidential election. The result has given a decisive message to the international community and other elements attempting to build an incorrect vision of the Government. He was confident that this mandate will give strength to carry forward the GovernmentƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s plans to reawaken the lives of the people, protecting the motherland.

I think people is still showing the gratitude for the government for ending the war. Now it is the time for those politicians to really show love to their motherland. They can start with stopping wastefull expenses, thamasha’s, massive corruptions, financial mismanagement, engage in unlawful activities, person/family building etc. People have done their part. They made great sacrfices by sending their sons and daughters to the frontline of the war, gracefully tolerated so many economic hardships while politicians lived in luxery, and after winning the war, voted overwhelmingly to the government to show the gratitude. Now it is time for those in power to come clean and do the right thing for the country. Because, if the history is any indication, Sri Lanka people have limits for their patience too. While they reward those who does good for country, they will not give them a permanant mandate to mismanage it either. So if the things does not change for good, if peoples have to face worse economic hardships, if those leaders continue to mismanage the country, I do not think people of Sri Lanka will be so kind next time. May be that is already happening. Government expected to get over 80% of the votes from their home turf in south. But that didn’t materialize. Elections two months back gave over 70% majority for the govt. while they got only 67% this time. May be it is a way of people for saying “yes, we stand by you for saving our country from terrorism, but watch out, there are more to do. We are not going to give u a free pass forever”.
