Monsieur Francois Zimeray
Human Rights Ambassador
Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs
France

Dear Monsieur Zimeray:

Mon Dieu Monsieur, Etes-vous stupid, ou non?

Just read the Asia Pacific news item which said, ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Ambassador for Human Rights, Francois Zimeray, said he hoped Colombo will signal the ending of its war with Tamil rebels in May by withdrawing emergency laws which allowed the detention of suspects for long periods without trial.

ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Ending of the emergency (in force since 1983) should have been the first consequence of ending the war (in May)ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ he said at the end of three days of talks with key Sri Lankan leaders on the islandƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s human rights situationƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚

Monsieur Zimeray, I hope you noticed that you had just encountered the most polite Sri Lankan leaders, or else they would have told you:

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Hey! Monsieur, why donƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t you mind your own bloody business and vamoose.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  You come from a country which is been probed for alleged genocide in Rwanda.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  A country which has been accused by government officials in Rwanda of being complicit in the killing of 800,000 people.

A country accused by a panel of respected Rwandans claiming that French soldiers stationed in Rwanda allowed or even encouraged the killing of thousands of TutsisƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚.

ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-You come from a country which always poke your nose into internal affairs of other countries like when your French President General Charles de Gaulle ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ on a state visit to Canada stepped up to the microphone at Montreal City Hall on July 24, 1967 in front of 15,000 people and announced ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Vive Montreal Vive le Quebec, Vive le Quebec libre! Vive le Canada francaisƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ and concluding with the remark ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Wet Vive la FranceƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ and was kicked out of Canada unceremoniously by then Prime Minister of Canada Lester B. Pearson.

But we have a bit more class and will not kick you out but will tell you to mind your own bloody business and vanish into thin air.ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚

I suppose you remember what you studied at school, what the Swiss philosopher and poet Frederic Amiel said – ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”What we do not understand we have no right to judgeƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  The reason why I reminded you of that was because on the same page of that news item about you also had the news item which said ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Two LTTE cadres arrested with explosives in northern Sri LankaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  That too was six months after the LTTE leaders were wiped out in May.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  And damn it Monsieur, you want Sri Lanka to repeal the emergency law!ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Monsieur, you must be out of your God damn mind.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  That is why I will tell you what the polite Sri Lanka government officials held back telling you ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…”

ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Hey! Monsieur Zimeray, why donƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t you mind your own bloody business and vamoose.ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚

Just a wee bit of advice to you Monsieur Zimeray ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Wisdom is knowing when to speak your mind and when to mind your speech.ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ And as Balthazar Grecian said, ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-He is an incorrigible ass who will never listen to others.ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  So I hope you will listen, watch and take note, before you Ass yourself being an arrogant Frenchman and keep away from Sri LankaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s internal affairs, as it is not you ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ after all who will live in an island where bombs go off at every street corner, under seats of buses or when at prayer at a Buddhist temple or an Islamic mosque, and sleeping in an adobe fisher-folk hut to be massacred by Tamil Tiger terrorists, but innocent Sri Lankans that the Tamil Tiger terrorists are targeting always.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  That is the ground reality.

Remember Monsieur, that the post May 18th problems in Sri Lanka could be and will be settled easily by the Sri Lankans, if ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ only the outsiders like you were willing to ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ listen, understand and let them get on withƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  their plans for peace andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  reconciliation. It is that simple.

Sincerely,

Asoka WeerasingheƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
