GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS AND UNP SAYS THE OPPOSITION COMMON CANDIDATE WILL BE ANNOUNCED FRIDAY

President Rajapaksa yesterday gave instructions to his Secretary Lalith Weeratunga to gazette the Presidential Proclamation to enable the Commissioner of Elections to hold the Presidential Election.

The United National Party General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka told local television channels in Colombo that their common candidate put forward against President Rajapaksa will be announced by Friday.

But so far, the election date or nomination datehas not been announced.

The former Army Commander General Sarath Fonseka who led the army in defeating the LTTE is widely believed to be the common candidate put forward against President Rajapaksa.

The decision to hold the Presidential election, two years before it is scheduled, was announced by Anura Priyadarshana Yapa to the Prime TV yesterday.

The President met his political alliance that supports him and all leaders representing the alliance expressed their fullest cooperation and help for the Rajapaksa candidacy.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka said his party has reached a consensus decision about the common candidate and the name will be announce on Friday after consultations with the other political parties of the United National Front.

But the website of the Derana TV said Deputy General Secretary of the UNP Lakshman Seneviratne had told them that their common candidate would be General Sarath Fonseka.

President RajapaksaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s announcement to his alliance party leaders was broadcast over the state owned ITN. The President said since he was able to fulfill the six years work promised in the Mahinda Chintana within four years , he was unafraid to go to the polls. United PeopleƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s Freedom Alliance leaders expressed their support at this meeting.

    Bankrupt politician such as SF, RW, MS, CKB, JAYALATH ETC GOING TO LOOSE THIS ELECTION.
