In the little note of congratulations I wrote yesterday, I congratulated the people of Sri Lanka. too for the resounding victory of President Rakapakse, for it is a victory for the people.

It was very heartening to hear what the President had said about not getting involved personallyƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ in what the “challenger” and his supporters didƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ during the campaign, terrible as some of those things were. Ours is a nation with one of the proudest and most refined civilizations of the world. In such a nation as ours, there is no room for vengeance.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
To all those who supported the victor, now is not a time for revenge or recrimination. Now is a time for pacification, and commitment to the noblest task which is yet to be done, and that is to rebuild the country from the dust and ashes of over thirty years of terrorist mayhem and spineless politics by our so-called leaders of that period when we fell from Emerald Isle to something that defies nomenclature. Now is the time to bathe and heal the wounds, to comfort hearts and souls, to be united, let bygones be bygones andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ with one voice swear an oath of allegiance and commitment to rebuild our nation.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
Of course, there will always be the riff raff who want to show their allegaince byƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ wreaking vengeance on the vanquished.

I have no doubt that they will be an insignificant minority. The rational, the reasonable, the enlightened- whichever side they supported-shouldƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ give their fullest cooperation and support to the President and his government to attend to the task at hand. I have not the least doubt that the President and the government will gladly welcome it for they will be hard put to do it without the cooperation and support of all Sri Lankans, and I mean all-regardless of ethnicity, creed or political alignment. If we all can put country before ego, Sri Lanka will soon be restored to its pristine glory, with due place, and recognition for all.
