Government seems to be achieving the impossible target of two thirds majority. Parliamentary General Election – 2010
Posted on April 8th, 2010
The United Peoples’ Freedom Alliance created history by winning a huge majority close to almost two-thirds in the 14th Parliament of Sri Lanka at the General election held Thursday.
Under the proportional representation system combined with preferential voting and a system of bonus seats for the winner at district level the two-thirds barrier was conceived to be insurmountable by its crafty architect former President J R Jayewardene.
In planting their imprint on the political map of Sri Lanka the people have in the process also relegated the Grand Old Party into oblivion and administered a death blow on the JVP dashing to the ground all its hopes of securing power by hanging on to the coat tail of a retired General.
The UPFA secured majorities over 100, 000 in six electoral districts while its majority in the electoral district of Kurunegala exceeded 200,000. The highest majority of 322,953 votes was recorded in the Gampaha district.
The results for Kandy and Trincomalee districts have not been released. They will be released only after a re-poll is held by the Elections Commissioner in electorates where counting has been suspended on account of alleged malpractices.

Semper Fidelis, Patriots of Lanka
By Ananda-USA
Our Motherland, resplendent Sri Lanka,
Hallowed be thy name!
Thy children flock today to vote,
To preserve thy immortal flame!
The Lion Flag flutters proudly aloft,
To remind us this freedom’s day!
Our duty to keep thee, safe and strong,
As our forefathers did yesterday!
A Mahinda Rajapaksa by deed and word,
Strode forth boldly to eternal fame!
To lead his people to a safer world,
When all others retreated in shame!

That is the end of the JVP and DNA. Somahansa and Anura Kumara will say, ” Oh! this is only a temporary set back” and the DNA will say,”Election rigging” Whatever they and UNP say this is also going to be the end of the political career of Ranil and Hanseka.

It is a shame that a minister had to cause a problem in Nawalapitiya and spoil the good name of the UPFA and all it stands for. This will allow the opposition to claim that the elections were not conducted fairly. This errant politician and all his followers who have been arrested should be punished to the full extent of the law and the Politician should be banned from holding Public office for at least two terms . he should be classified as a felon and prevented from entering Parliment. Now that the President has enough seats he could afford to dump some of these dime a dozen ministers and select a good cabinet with honourable people who would serve the country and not go looking for bribes. This is necessary to maintain the respect and good name of the politicians, which was lost by the previous cabinet as there were many bribe takers who had to be tolerated by the President to remain in power with the requisite number of seats.

ANANDA ! I like your poem, it is a beautiful presentation, Very apt. Iam a Poet too, with two Shakespeare Trophys’ of Excellence, and one Shakespeare Poet of the Year Medallion.
The President would probably invite you to Sri Lanka, to read your poem over TV. Alles Gute. Susantha USA
