Two Events Mark Vesak Celebrations in Minneapolis

The Minnesota Buddhist Vihara has organized two events to celebrate Vesak Day (Buddha’s Birthday) this year.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The celebrations begin Tuesday ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ [May 18] 7 p.m. at the Vihara premises, 3401 N. Fourth St., Minneapolis with a special Dhamma sermon by the Venerable Uda Iriyagama Dhammajeeva.

A meditation session will follow the sermon at 8.15 p.m.

Dhammajeeva is the head meditation instructor and abbot of Meetirigala Nissarana Vanaya, Sri Lanka. ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ 

A daylong Vesak celebration will take place at the Vihara premises Saturday [May 22].

The Ven. Witiyala Seewalie, abbot of the Vihara, said the celebration will commence at 7.30 a.m. with the observance of Eight Precepts and Noble Silence and end about 4.30 p.m. with singing of Bhakti Gee (devotional songs) and lighting of Vesak lanterns.

The Venerable Maitipe Wimalasara, who is currently teaching Buddhism at the Dharma Vijaya Buddhist Vihara in Los Angeles, will deliver the guest Vesak sermon Saturday at 8 a.m.

The Vihara has requested the Buddhist families to encourage children to make Vesak lanterns and bring them to the celebration.
