Who’s afraid of another Prabhakaran rising again?

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ At the height of the Vadukoddai War when Velupillai Prabhakaran was projected as the invincible Tamil by the NGO and anti-national pundits they collectively prophesied that the war cannot be won. After the war was won this same weird mob is now prophesying that the peace cannot be won. One of the pundits in this mob is Sanjan Hattotuwa, (ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-HattoƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ for short) the editor of the Groundviews. In his latest editorial he says: A ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-government supremely adept at winning a war is outrageously inept at winning peace.ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ This inanity ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” mark you, the government has barely had sufficient time to deal with the devastating consequences of a 33-year-old war — entitles his website to be renamed as Airy-fairyviews rather than Groundviews. If ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-HattoƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢sƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ feet were planted on the ground he would first measure the time it took the Allies, particularly those that butter his bread now, to win the peace after World War II which only lasted six years unlike the 33-year-old Vadukoddai War.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Of course, he is singing for his supper at the Centre for Policy Alternative and he has no choice but to follow his guru and patron, Pakiosothy (Paki) Saravanamuttu who at the height of the war was running down the Sri Lankan forces as a bunch of deserters running away from the invincible forces of the all-mighty Prabhakaran. Now that their theoretical myths have been blasted by the same forces he condemned as ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-desertersƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ they are singing a different tune. It is hilarious to see how ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-PakiƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ and ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-HattoƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ are falling over each other now to denigrate the Tamil Tigers as fascists who got what they deserved. What bloody hypocrites!

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ During the war, particularly towards the end ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-PakiƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ was frantically flying from Western capital to capital to stop the advance of the Security Forces which was the only way of saving his ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-invincible PrabhakaranƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚. Then he was most reluctant to condemn Prabhakaran the way he is doing now. How could he? At that time ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-PakiƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ and ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-HattoƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ were primary beneficiaries, reaping the dividends of the war waged by Prabhakaran. After all, Prabhakaran was the biggest money-spinner for ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-PakiƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ and ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-HattoƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚. They and their mates in NGOs would have run out of the big money they pocketed without Prabhakaran committing war crimes and crimes against humanity. His brutalities and political crimes gave them the opportunity to blame the Sri Lankan governmentƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” a common ruse used to rake in foreign funds in the name of ending violations of human rights and restoring peace. ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-PakiƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ was also enjoying the limelight. He was invited by foreign agencies as the specialist who knew how to end the Vadukoddai War with his theoretical mumbo-jumbo. In the end all their bogus theories failed and it was the courage of the committed Security Forces that won ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-the unwinnableƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ war and put an end to the violations of human rights from both sides.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Now that there is nothing to gain from the Vadukoddai War they have shifted to peace. They are making a strenuous bid to exploit peace as an issue to keep the money rolling in for them to shed crocodile tears in their beer served at five-star hotels or cocktail circuits. They are demanding instant appeasement of ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-the Tamil aspirationsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ to restore peace like the way demanded instant appeasement of the Tamil Tigers to end the war. At the height of the war they cooked up this theory of isolating Prabhakaran from the Tamil people by giving them a package near enough to a separate state. This is what Ranil Wickremesinghe called ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-asymmetrical solutionƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚, meaning granting to the Jaffna Tamils alone more than what others have.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Wickremesinghe, in fact, granted an ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-asymmetrical solutionƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ by handing over the north and the east to Prabhakaran in the disastrous Ceasefire Agreement. Did it help him to win the peace? To appease the Jaffna Tamils, he even went as far as starting his last presidential campaign from Jaffna. Did he win their votes? President Mahinda Rajapakse polled more than him in the north and the east. Every decisive and major event have proved that the fake theories of ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-PakisƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ and the ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-HattosƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ have the identical future as Prabhakaran: seemingly good on top but hollow and nothing to sustain from the inside.. In the last analysis, their voodoo theories are another means of exploiting the misery of the Sri Lankan people for them to grab funds from abroad to maintain their expensive life styles and not peace or progress.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ In fact, President Rajapakse should appoint a commission to investigate why all their theoretical fantasies failed to win peace and why his down-to-earth ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-gahuwoth gahanawaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ policy knocked the hell out of the ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-PakisƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ and the ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-HattosƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Besides, there is no hurry to rush into the trap of the ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-PakisƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ and ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-HattosƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ who canƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t even solve their own in-house problems. For instance, their media man, Sunanda Deshapriya, turned out to be crook who played out the money allotted to look after the journalists of Sri Lanka. When the investigators were after him he bolted to a foreign haven claiming that he was being persecuted by the government. This is how the NGO crooks survive. They must first put their house in order before recommending recipes to solve the problems of the nation.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The government, of course, is faced with the immense task of negotiating with history, just not with the proxies of the failed Tigers. The government has been given a mandate to negotiate with the nation as a whole and not just with some mono-ethnic extremists of the north whose fictitious political goals sank in Nandikadal.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ In the meantime, the NGOs and the Tamil diaspora are plotting to win their political goals which they lost in the war through devious and politicized human rights issues. Our people did not sacrifice their lives for the NGOs or the Tamil diaspora to win through the backdoor what they lost in the frontlines. The Tamil leadership accepted the 13th Amendment which was forced down the throat of Sri Lanka by the Indians. That should be the end of the story with the amendments laid down by the Supreme Court. That, incidentally, is the law of the land unless the new parliament revokes it by using the two-thirds majority.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The NGO lobbies are now canvassing to go beyond the 13th Amendment. Prabhakaran too tried to go beyond that with his brutal violence and it sank in lagoon of Nandikadal. With that sank any spurious legitimacy they claimed for a greater share of power and territory. There is no legitimacy (1) if we are to adhere to the law (domestic or international), (2) if fairness is to be ensured to all communities who are yearning for lasting peace by sharing the land in common with all those willing to do so and (3) if we are to remember and honour the sacrifices made by the Sri Lankan youth to protect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the republic. There is no legitimacy for the Rajapakse administration to go beyond the final solution signed and sealed by the sacred blood of the nation on May 18, 2009.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Ending of the Vadukoddai War should be considered as the final solution to the never-ending claims of ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-the little now and more laterƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ tactics of the northern extremists. It is not the I/NGOs that will have to pay for the bloody consequences of the over-exaggerated claims of the Jaffna jingoists leading incrementally to a separate state.. It is our war-weary people who have paid and will have to pay for the fake mantras of the NGOs and the allied lobbies crying for ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-justiceƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ only for a dwindling minority of Jaffna Tamils. Eventually the government has to answer to the national electorate and not to some fictitious electorate in the Tamil diaspora.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The NGOs , in the meantime, have mounted a massive campaign to reverse the decisive solution of May 18, 2009 by mounting a local and foreign campaigns. ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-HattoƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ in his website, Groundviews boasts of producing solutions by raising the same old bogey of Prabhakaran rising from his watery grave in Nanthikadal.. My blunt answer to that is to let Prabhakaran rise again because his Vadukoddai War I ended in depopulating and devastating Jaffna. According to the Tamil diaspora statistic over one million Tamils have left Jaffna. If there is going to be a Vadukoddai War II how many will be left in Jaffna to even remember the world ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-EelamƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚? Will it not export or decimate the remaining balance forever?

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Invariably, Vadukoddai War II will provide ample excuses for most of the remaining Jaffnaites to go abroad. They are not going to hang to an illusion forever and forever. Those who sgtay behind will be dragged into a war which they donƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t want. Since the LTTE military capacity and infrastructure has been dismantled and stripped of its power the lotus-eating Tamil diaspora will have to start all over again, from rock bottom. And for that they will have to forcibly recruit Tamil youth because their ambition will be to go abroad not to fight at home. The young girls who get married to avoid recruitment will be forced to eat pineapples and jump from trees to abort their pregnancies. The young boys will be deprived of schooling and taught to be killers or be killed. The bulk of the Jaffnaites will be caught in the crossfire.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The NGOs, in the meantime, will put in claims for extra funding to foreign embassies to count the dead. The biggest growth industry will be that of the undertakers. Dr. Michael Roberts, another theoretical weirdo, will go round Melbourne displaying the graveyards of the Tigers as a shining example of the heroic ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Ponku ThamilƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚. Human Rights Watch and ICG will write more reports on the deteriorating situation. But the overall impact of Vadukoddai War II will be to reduce the Jaffna population to almost zero. Problem solved, once and for all.. If the Jaffna Tamils, after all the gruesome and unbearable suffering, want to follow another Prabhakaran into Nanthikadal again, like the children who followed the Pied Piper of Hamelin, so be it. There is nothing that the rest of the nation can do about it. It is their choice and their responsibility if they have a suicidal tendency to drag their long-suffering people into another Nanthikadal.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The responsibility of avoiding Vadukoddai War II is not with the government but with the leadership of Jaffna. They may be buoyed by the rhetoric of the Tamil diaspora whose power was demonstrated in the last stages of the last Vadukoddai War. They threw in all their might to stop the war. Where did it take them? What did they achieve? Even if David Milliband and Bernard Kouchner invade Sri Lanka how long will they last? If India decides to come in how long can they hold out? They have learnt their lesson in their IPKF misadventure. Do the foreign powers want another Afghanistan or a Vietnam in Sri Lanka?

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The early success of the Tigers was because our forces were not equipped, not trained, nor driven by a political will to resist. Thanks to Prabhakaran, the whole nation has now been transformed into a fighting force and no power on earth can impose their will against the will of the nation. ThatƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s for sure. There is, perhaps, the odd chance of the nation going down temporarily with the backing of the types of Ranil Wickremesinghe and Ravi Karunayake, and the AoGs in the UNP. But it will be an expensive and exhausting experience for the foreign invaders to impose their will on the nation as a whole.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ So let us not be overawed by this bogey of Prabhakaran rising to haunt the nation again. Besides, the pragmatic Jaffnaiites, who are tired of going through one war and its consequences, are not likely to fall for Vadukoddai War II. If they do they deserve what they get. They canƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t blame the Sinhalese this time. There is a time to say enough is enough and if the Jaffnaites have not had enough of war they are most welcome to go ahead to wallow in the bloody mud of Nanthikadal again. But they should not blame the others. The Jaffna leadership knows the inescapable consequences of war and they must accept total responsibility for their folly if they decide to go back to Vadukoddai Resolution once again.

  1. Ratanapala Says:

Bravo! You are writing what the majority Sri Lankans think, live and believe in their minds. If the Racist Tamils want another Nanthikadal they are welcome. Next time it will not be the UNP goons who will come looking for them. The entire nation from Dondra Head to Point Pedro will be looking for them. Next time ‘lede’ nittawatama suwa wei!”!

The Sri Lankan Nation have had enough of these racists. We need a country where all Sri Lankans can live in peace where they please. This time there should not be any asymmetrical granting of rights to please the secessionists. All Sri Lankans must live by the same rules and laws. The nation must look into special racist laws like – Thesavalamai and Mukkuwa laws and how they disadvantage those who are not protected by these laws. The Vadukoddai Tamils always wanted to treated special and a cut above the rest. This must not happen.

Now that the President has the necessary power, he should implement a solution that will be agreeable to the welfare of the nation and not to the likes of India or any other power. Those who do not agree are free to leave Sri Lanka as the majority in the Tamil Diaspora.

King Dutu Gamunu said during the campaign to regain Sri Lanka from the Cholas – “This exercise is not to gain the joys of kingship.” It is up to President Rajapakse to emulate this great king and do what is right for the nation, for he too will be remembered by his successes or failures. He has scored a great victory in finishing off the terrorists. Time is now ripe for him to assert his powers and cement his gains throughout the length and breadth of the land.

  2. Leelawardena Says:

Long before Piripaharan started demanding Eelam in Sri Lanka, EVR Peryiar had demanded a separate country for Dravidaian in India. Tamils form only one race in the Dravidian group. And it is Tamils that had instigated other Dravidians to join them to demand ‘self rule’ for Madras Presidency at the time. Madras state was demarcated at the time of Indian independence, and federal powers were given to it. Land as well as police powers were given. All non-Tamil Dravidians were satisfied. Were the Tamils satisfied? No. That is where they started “little now and more later” theory first. Tamils kept asking more and more power. Indian government had split the Madras state, and ‘Tamil Nadu’ was demarcated for Tamils on racial basis. Were the Tamils satisfied? No.

In 1962, Tamils voted vehemently for a separatist party, the DMK and put it in power. They started agitating for separation. India grasped the game plan of Tamils and responded in a very clear manner. Nehru had put a stop to Tamil separation demand for good. He did not do so with carrot but a big stick. Nehru had passed an amendment to the Indian constitution to ban individuals and political parties that promote separation from contesting elections. DMK had to choose between losing their parliamentary seats and dropping the demand for separation. The Central Committee of the DMK met at Royapuram on November 3, 1963, and unanimously voted to drop its demand for independent Dravida Nadu.

We too should have followed Nehru’s example. Had JRJ done so, Sambandan and company may not have gone around the world as MPs and condemned Sri Lanka during the last war.

The 13A is a white elephant. It did no good to anyone other than corrupt jobless politicians of the south. Now that President Rajapakse can muster enough power, he should abolish this curse, 13A at the appropriate time. One parliament is enough for this small country. Not even districts should be encouraged to get segregated or demarcated on race basis. Ordinary Tamils, Sinhalese, Muslims and all others should be empowered to get day to day needs done at village or town level. This should be our sacred aims. No Hotta or Parki can scare us on the bogy of the dead Piripaharan or the one to be born should not distract us from reaching what we aim at. But that doesn’t mean we should leave any racial ghettos for anything like it to continue in this land.

  3. P. Subassinghe Says:

These bloody hypocrites ( “Pakis” and the “Hattos”) have no shame at all … How could they have shame when they have to depend on I/NGO dollars to maintain their life style … If there is ‘peace’, they will find something else to get this money flowing …. They are not definitely independet think tanks as western media portrays for their benefit … These ‘mud tanks’ are destroying the sri lankan good name abroad and thank you, Mahinda for exposing them …

  4. cassandra Says:

    Leelawardena,
It is good you have presented these facts because I don’t suppose many are aware of the demand for a Dravidastan so many years ago. From what I have read, one reason why the campaign for a Dravidastan lost ground was because the non-Tamil Dravidians went cold on the idea, out of fear (with good reason, one assumes) that if a Dravidastan came into being, the Tamils will have dominated it , to the detriment of non-Tamil Dravidians. And so the campaign for a Dravidastan ‘reduced’ to the demand for a Tamil state. But Nehru put paid to even that with a constitutional amendment in the 60s.

  5. Geeth Says:

Sri Lanka cannot afford to be divided on racial lines. For that reason, whatever solution we bring-forth to this problem must never be a step forward to separation. Every community must learn how to respect each other. This learning is not only a responsibility of minorities of the land, but also majority must learn to respect minority cultures and live together. (I am not suggesting that existing majority attitudes of the nation doesn’t have this quality, but we can improve it further)

The problem of Tamil community of Sri Lanka is the absence of their notion of nation in their political approach. They cannot stomach the idea that they are a part of this nation in which they are a minority and the Sinhalese are the majority. They do not see their image in their real proportion, and always tend to undermine the position of their fellow Sinhalese with external help. Due to this approach, external enemies manipulate our affairs and keep us apart forever. Tamil always behaved as the spoiled member of the family; that is the element destroys the unity and peace in the house. They must fix that problem first of all.

As HLMD says, if they go along the line of separation again, it will be disaster for them. It may be the last gasp. If they do not want to think as a part of Sri Lankan polity, how can you satisfy them? If they lack very fundamental of the bonding agent of a nation, why they blame the nation that they consider they do not belong to?? My critic about Colombian is also coming from same stance. They think as if they are not a part and parcel of the majority culture and their political aspirations. They are more willing to stand-by external formulas rather than home grown ones. Political behavior of Tamils and Colombians are identical. We witnessed this during presidential election.

But we can see that the Colombians have transcended racial difference. They have developed the art of living together with different races. But their bonding agent that brings this tolerance is their connection to the alien culture of the west. What Sri Lanka must learn now is to search for some solution to find out a bonding agent out of indigenous cultures to keep all races together.

Once I attended a presentation by Paki at the George Washington University in DC. I could not beleive that how incompetent this guy was. Through out his lecture he was mumbling repeating the problems of Tamils in Sri Lanka and how Tamils live in Sri Lanka as second class citizens. I was mad as hell. During the Q&A session I asked him that does he live in Colombo as a second class citizen and I told him that I know his life style. He was confused and could not answer. Second thing I wanted point out was that problems he mentioned are not limited to Tamils. It is everywhere in rural areas. At this point former US ambassador to SL got up and said that my argument was correct. The argument became heated to it’s climax. I left before security came escorted out.

  7. Raj Says:

I was wondering who the editor of this ground view is. thanks for exposing this person. Mahinda you are 100% correct in your analysis of this ‘newspaper’, which is a joke. These self appointed political analysts like Hatto are the ones who creates division between the peace loving citizens of all races and are obstacles to reconciliation. Yet some people say there is no media freedom. What utter rubbish.
