Animal sacrifices in Sri Lanka – Requirement for ‘Animal Welfare Legislation’
Posted on August 30th, 2010

Dr.P.A.Samaraweera, Australia

On the 25th of August a group of Buddhist monks had protestedƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ against an animal slaughter ritual in the Munneswaram KaliƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Kovil in Chilaw.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ It is alleged thatƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ around 400 goats and a countless number of fowls had been inhumanelyƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ slaughtered at this ritual.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
Hinduism promotes non-violence and vegetarianism. There are many sects of Hinduism and this ritual is performed by a sect of Kali worshippers. Shivan Kovil which is also in Chilaw condemns animal sacrifice. ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ On the other hand,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ some Sinhala Buddhists partake in this ritual for ‘religious favours’ from God Kali.

Those who are against animal sacrificesƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ treat it as an inhuman act done during pre-historic civilizations who did not value life. The mass slaughter of animals in public places by brutal methodsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  is also considered unhygienic. Torture of animals is not acceptable in civilized societies and considered sadistic. These brutalƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ acts are performed in the presence of children and will have a negativeƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ psychological impact on them. There were pictures of children dragging goats with their parents andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ carrying fowls toƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the Kovil. ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Children are taken to religious places to instil inƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ them, ethics onƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ compassion, kindness, value of life etc.,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ and not to exhibit horror.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
According to neutral observers, the Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) in western countries will not permit this type of horrendous cruelty to animals.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Fox unting which was a popular sport among the British aristocracy years ago,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ was considered cruelƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ and banned in the UK. Celebrities who wear fur coats orƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ whoƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ carry leather bags are looked down upon by animal lovers.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
In India, 7 states and terrritories had enacted Statutes prohibiting animal sacrifices for the purpose of any religious worshipƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ or adoration, following Emperor Asoka’s well known Rock Edict: ” Here no animal shall be killed or sacrificed”. According to the Indian Constitution, it is a fundamental right of every citizen to have compassion for living creatures.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
In Sri Lanka, prior to the advent of colonialism there were Royal decrees based on the respect for animal life. During various times, ancient kings had issued proclamations related to welfare of animals. For example, five kings of Lanka from the first to the eighth century, beginning with Amandagamani Abhaya, forbade the killing of any living being within the realm. King Vijayabahu 1 in the 11th century and Parakrambahu the Great in the 12th century also made proclamationsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  protecting wild life. Kirti Sri Nissankamalla, one of the kings who came after Parakramabahu made famous inscriptions forbidding the killing of all living beings in the irrigation lakes of the entire country and animals within seven leagues of a city. These instances show the attitude to animal life in ancient Lanka.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
But it is a matter of deepƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ concern that legislators inƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ modernƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Sri Lanka, so far had turned a blind eye with regardƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ toƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ compassion towards animals. It isƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ more than sixty years since independence. SoƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ it is time for state interventionƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ in relation to animal welfareƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ and for legislators and religious leaders to look into the requirement for, “Animal welfare Legislation in Sri Lanka”.

Read the History of Dharma Asoka. he allowed at least two pea-cocks to be killed and coked in his Royal Kitchen. Hindu Kings limited Vegitarian food for the Temple workers only.

But now Buddhist Monks demand beef steaks and other meats during DANAYA. If HALAL meat can exist this ritual too has no problems. But opposition by MEAT eating monks is RACIST action. Kill the animal in the name of GOD and eat it!

  2. trueblue Says:

I am horrified to see the comments made by M.S.MUdali …

This is not king Asoka’s era..King Asoka even killed opponents…Can you justify it..

Can you give one single situation where Buddhist Theros were offered/demanded beaf stakes..??
Do not just put comments as you know English…

How do you say Buddhist monks’ action is racist..According to you , you are ok to kill to people to get treasures.(as you can kill people in the name of God or as a ritual..)

  3. Sajith Says:

I thought torturing animals is illegal in Sri Lanka. But do we really have to ban animal sacrifices? It will hurt Tamil Hindus. In my opinion we have to look at problems from their point as well. They are now hurt over many things, war, IDPs, HSZs, large army camps, human smuggling victims. Do we really have to do things that will increase their hurt now? This practice was there for a long time. Buddhist monks also do it. It is part of a religious thing of a group of people. We cannot stop that without further hurting Tamils. I feel uneasy about many things we do that unintentionally hurt Tamils. Shall we drop this matter for peace?

  4. Nanda Says:

At every opportunity some Tamils will be worst than animals. Mudali is one of them. Animal mass killing was a feature of Brahminism, not modern Hindusim. Buddha condemn it.
If this cannot be banned in Dhamma Deepa , we must hand over the island to Seeman of India ! To hell with Tamils ban this cruel act now !

  5. Nanda Says:

No Buddhist monk encourage violence in any nature. Only those people wearing a Buddhist robe may do anything. No one can stop that because anyone can wear robes. This is not an excuse to inhumane treatment of animals.

  6. M.S.MUdali Says:

King Asoka became Buddhist after the war with Kalinga. His Kitchen reduced the meat consumption but not with pea-cock meat!

Sri Lankan Buddhism is a kind of Parangi Buddhism. Sri Lankan Buddhist monks run after power and wealth. They are now having political party. Uphelding Buddhist principles become a “load” even for the Monks.

I know well that Monks eat meat and drink Arakku or Whisky now!

But I dont need “sacrifice” for meat. But Old rituals still alive in many cultures. What are you going to do with Halal Meat? Islamaized meat is OK for Hindus and Buddhists?

When Muslims have their “Sharia” court and their own schools in Dharma Dheepa at the TAX payers expense, why cannot other religious believers stop their thousands years old religious rituals?

A Muslim Girl was thrashed by Muslim Thugs in a Mosque at Gokkarella, Kuranagala! Torturing Humans by Muslims allowed in Sri lanka because their wild religion dictate to punish or kill people.

When we comparing animal sacrifice with the crime in Gokkarella to a HUMAN, animal sacrifice has nothing! Those who cry against Animal sacrifice must raise their voice against HUMAN TOTURE!

  7. Sajith Says:

    Mudali:

They cry to ban animal sacrifice at the Kali temple. This has been in practice for thousands of years. If we ban sacrifices to goddess Kali something bad may happen to the world. May be even before Buddhism came to the island. How can you ban it? Ban everything that hurts Tamils is their motto. I’m a Buddhist but I don’t like it. I feel guilty for how we treat Tamils. It is not right. Every action has an equal and oppositte reaction. One day Sinhalese will be at receiving end. Then please don’t do what we do to you. There are good people too. As you said those monks who shout to ban animal sacrifices are dead silent about human torture. In the past whenever the monks strayed off the path of Lord Buddha the king brought exemplary monks from Burma. Needless to say it is not done now. Burma bash monks Sri Lanka court Burma. Sri Lanka take money from Iran and buy weapons from Israel. Our friends also have a very bad human rights record. Very bad record on how they treat their minorities. This is crazy. We have bad company. All is good when we win but when we lose everything will come crashing in. We have to stop and think. Will my action hurt others? If so don’t do it no matter how good it seems to me.

  8. Nihal Fernando Says:

Sajith, Some Tamils are also very upset about killing VP and LTTE terrorists. So, they are very hurt. We should not have eradicated terrorism because it has made some Tamils in Sri Lanka, Tamils in Taminadu and Tamils living in other countries are very disappointed and frustrated that the government stopped suicide missions, blood bath and destroying of innocent lives of human beings.

If anybody really believes in the Creator and His creations nobody could kill animals in the name of sacrfication to Creator God. We human beings have no right to safrifice other santient beings created by God. If I were a believer of God I would rather sacrifice myself with humble submission. Do not do unto others what you would not want them do unto you.

P.S. MuDali is a crack case and I do not want to waste my time on him.

  9. Sajith Says:

    Nihal

I get this feeling that we are exceeding our limits with Tamils. If they are sad about VP, bad luck. They are sad on other things too. They have to feel at home in Sri Lanka. Otherwise we are losing their support. Their support is needed for peace.

  10. samaraweera Says:

Not all Hindus believe in animal sacrifices. Only a certain sect who follow concept. The Kovil next to where the sacrifices were made are against this torture.

In India where Hinduism is practised widely , very recently they have passed more legislation giving protection to animals. But nobody objected. It is only in Sri Lanka where all the fuss . Because there is more freedom in Sri Lanka.

  11. Fran Diaz Says:

Since it is stated that people who worship Goddess Kali are the ones who do animal sacrifices, I will attempt to define what Goddess Kali means in Hinduism. Wikipedia states thus :
“Kālī is frequently confused with the word kali, as in Kali Yuga or the DEMON Kali. However, the words Kālī (“black, time”) and kali (“weak, crude, inarticulate”) are etymologically unrelated, and the goddess Kālī is not associated with Kali Yuga in Hinduism.” Also, Goddess Kali is supposed to represent Eternal Energy, and is the goddess of time & change is considered a Mother Goddess, and the consort of Lord Shiva.
There are Hindu temples in Assam (India) as well as Nepal where goats and chickens as well as buffaloes are sacrificed. These sacrifices are mainly done at mandirs following the Shakti school of Hinduism where the female nature of Brahman is worshipped in the form of Kali Ma and Durga. There are many village temples in Tamil Nadu where this kind of sacrifice takes place”.

It is relevant here to mention that Judaism, Christianity & Islam also had the aspect of animal sacrifice. After the animals are sacrificed, it is common practice to share the meat among the believers.

In Nature, human beings are designed to be more herbivorous than carnivorous. This is shown by the fact that human beings have teeth designed for chewing (as in grass eating cows, goats, etc) as opposed to meat eaters likes lions, tigers, dogs & cats with sharp teeth suitable for tearing meat. In a human being the two canine teeth have almost lost their pointed
    nature.

Furthermore, the intestinal tract of meat eaters are short, unlike those of herbivores. Human beings have long intestinal tracts, as in herbivores.

Also, all carnivores lap water whereas herbivores suck it up. Ever watched a cow drawing up the water while a member of the cat family or a dog will lap its water ? And how do human beings drink their liquid from a glass or cup ? We never lap it up by putting our tongues out, but rather suck it into our mouths just like the herbivores.

Therefore, by Nature’s design, human beings are herbivores.

There is no need to have animal sacrifices and eat sacrificial flesh. Lanka should ban animal sacrifices, or better still, people should realise the futility of it and give it up.

“It is not the world that needs peace; it is people. When the people in the world are at peace within, the world will be at peace” says Prem Rawat (see website http://www.wopg.org).

  12. Ramanie Says:

I have no time for Buddhist haters like MS Mudali but people like Sajith- I humbly disagree with you.

What? Don’t breathe because the Tamils may get upset?! Tamils have been upset since the Colebrook Commission recommended universal franchise to SL in the 1920s. They hated one man one vote because it will pave way to majority rule (democracy) and dismantle the form of apartied they were practising against the Sinhalese majority in SL with the blessings of the colonial masters. They were really happy when the 12% was commanding majority powers in SL prior to that. Since universal franchise Tamils have been unhappy citing grievances, discrimination, genocide. disenfranchisement etc etc etc… Tamils suffered as much as everyone else did in the past 30 years because of the war Tamil LTTE declared on people of SL. Ill conceived actions bring sadness to all around! Only the Tamil IDPs get all this attention- 25,000 Sinhalese evicted from the North by LTTE have been IDPs for 40 years- some have perished without trace. So, are we to live on tiptoes till eternity in case Tamils get upset if we ask them not do things that are seen as wrong? Inflicting pain and death on defenceless animals is wrong- it is a matter that should be stopped by animal protection legislation. It is not the majority of Hindus that do this slaughter – it is a sect. they should conform to the ethos of the majority SL people.

  13. Sunil Vijaya Says:

Interesting dialogue. What is the difference between a sacrifice and killing an animal for consumption of meat? Those who argue animal sacrifice is wrong, what is their stance they take on killing an animal for consumption? Both practices are wrong. Buddha did consume meat as he did not assume he was eating a cow or a goat but just another piece of food to maintain his body. In fact there was a commotion on this issue and Buddha’s physician Jivaka brought this up and Buddhas explanation was that which I state above. However if he knew that the animal was killed for the sole purpose to feed him, he refused. Animal sacrifices too Buddha rejected as there was no merit in it. If we extend animal rights we can hit the absurdity of taking anti-biotics to kill bacteria when we get sick. What rights do we have on killing animals we do not see. Jains do practice this to the level of absurdity(hot water usage) which Buddha rightly pointed out to follow the middle path(just taking the meaning on this context only, middle path in Buddhist terms is an entirely different meaning). Let anyone practice anything and let them suffer in Sansaara. Laws do protect killing of humans and its just another selfish act of humans, without due consideration to animals. Hypocritical North Americans fight to stop killing of whales while they slaughter mink pups in the most aborrent manner. We live in a hypocritical world – so long anything doesn’t apply to a particular person – that action is fine and he goes on criticising others.

  14. M.S.MUdali Says:

I agree with the SCIENTIFIC explanation with FRANZ DIAZ! That is absolutely correct.

I see the Sinhala racists usually bark at me and cry foul! That is why I mentioned at first this MONK agitation is a RACIST act and nothing else.

One brands me as BUDDHIST hater. I dont like the way some monks behave. Can these people quote any thing in Buddhism to support the actions of these monks?

But this “animal rights activist “keep silence” on the beating of a 17 years old mother in Mosque. How? Animals before the Humans or Humans before the animal? Or these people think “that is their problem”!

If these monks or people support the monks feel “that is a Muslim problem”, better stop at barking at Hindus or at their traditions!

  15. Sajith Says:

    Ramanie,

But we are the majority and we have to look after them as well. Now they are saddened by many things. We didn’t intentionally hurt them but LTTE dragged them with it. We did our best and saved them all. Should we increase their sufferings? I’m not saying we have to stop everything if it makes Tamils sad. Go jump in the lake I would tell them. But religious matters are too sensitive.

Did you notice how politicians from all sides avoided it? When politicians with a backbone are imprisoned, only those who sing for the gallery remains outside. But they do what is popular. People think this way. They don’t want to change anything that can hurt some of them. We gain nothing much by banning it. If anyone wants to show their children torture, let them do it. There is something called Karma. They will pay for it. They killed Sinhalese and they paid for it with their lives. Good. It ends there.

    Fran,

It is not about meat eating. It is only a ritual. Only once a year.

  16. Nihal Fernando Says:

    Sajith,

I do not know why you want to shed copious tears for the Tamils so much. You will have to go by the reasons rather than by the emotions. You are either a hipocratic or a non-patriotic. Just because we happen to be the majority we have no any obligation to look after any minorities. As our President said in the recent past there is no majority or minority in our country. As a whole we are Sri Lankans and that is it. How many leading businessmen, doctors, lawyers doing their business and carrying out their respective professions in Colomb capital and the sub-urbs? Their kids attending the best of best schools in Colombo. They also get the free education in government schools from grade 1 to medical college or law college. Go to Wellawatte, Bambalapitiya, Hetti Vidiya, 1st Cross street to 5th Cross Street. No Sinhalese can do any business in those areas but the Tamils have the monopoly. Can you buy a land in Jaffna? answeer is no. We being the Sinhala majority we are the more discrimanted nation than the Tamils. You say that we gain nothing by banning animal sacrifications but at least those helpless, innocent animals will do. In that case, we did a mistake by banning the LTTE because it hurts some Tamils. Sathi Puja where the widow has to sacrifies herself by jumping into the pier where the dead body of her husband is cremated is also a ritual in some parts of India, which was banned but still taking place secretly.

You say to Fran, “It is not about meat eating. It is only a ritual. Only once a year”. So, Sathi Puja is also a ritual and taking place only once in a life time for the poor widow. Do not try to hold firmly to an opinion as a course. It is called pertinacious. You gain nothing by doing so. Be realistic, wide open your eyes then you can become a good Samaritan.

  17. Sajith Says:

    Nihal,

It is not similar to Sathi Puja. I don’t hold to an opinion. I feel bad the way we treat Tamils. Take 1956 S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike Sinhala language act. It was the right thing for most people then. It was democratic. But it hurt Tamils and what happened? Like someone said we offer eggs, chicken, mutton and sometimes beef at Dana to the monks. No one tries to ban it and restore true Buddhist virtues. How can we control Hindus if this is how we behave. If the Dana doesn’t have those they are reluctant to come the next time. We tie elephants caputered from their free habitants in the wild and take them in perahera. That is very cruel. These animals are kept in confinement for their entire life. As a Buddhist I cannot follow a double standard of accepting that and saying no to hindus being cruel to animals.

  18. Sajith Says:

    Nihal,

Christians are worse. They kill thousands of chicken, pigs, turkeys, bulls for xmas and easter. Killing these animals is directly linked to their festivals. During church feasts they kill many chicken for food. From the animals’ view point, any Christian festival means death. What is your rationale for killing so many animals to celebrate the birth of your prophet at xmas? If you are a Christian you cannot blame Hindus for this.

  19. Fran Diaz Says:

Ritual killing is defined as : the act of killing (an animal or person) in order to propitiate a deity. The ‘deity’ was created by the Human mind, the ‘reasoning’ that killing an animal will ‘appease this deity’ was also created by someone’s mind. Who created these rules ? We do not know. All we know is that these are ancient practices, probably created to soften the sense of guilt & shame human beings feel in the act of killing for food. People ought to give up these practices in modern times through reasoning.

In modern times, it is very easy to get our protein and other nutrients from vegetable sources. Labs today have amino acid tablets (made in India – why can’t Lanka produce these ?), to supplement the vegetarian diet. In the west, soy protein is used to produce artificial meats with taste & texture just like real meat or chicken – again, why can’t Lanka produce such delicious food ?

However, I think it is rather hard for people who are used to eating meat & fish to give it up easily, unless they are convinced that they will have better health & feel better for doing so, and enjoy life at a higher level of consciousness.
    It’s worth trying …

  20. Fran Diaz Says:

I would like to add that I write with offense to none on these sensitive topics. It is hard for people to change practices that have been carried on for a long time. Applying Reason & Rationalizing will help change for the better, even gradually. Evolution has to happen within each of us, and that is real & true growth.

Also, a human being needs only about 50-55 grams of protein a day, and this can be easily had from vegetable protein.

  21. M.S.MUdali Says:

Nihal Fernando is an uneducated man. He cries that “SATHI” is a Hindu ritual. That was a by product of the MUSLIM invasion. Islam always preach to kill KAFFIRS and RAPE their women. This SATHI was started by the defeated HINDU ROYAL WOMEN in North India to escape from MUSLIM rapists. In the South India, SATHI is unheard.

If he is a Christian or Catholic he has no moral rights to bark at Hindus under the cover of SINHALA. Catholic Portugeuse too did the same to our women folks like Muslims!

But he is silent on the beating of the Muslim Girl in a Mosque. He support Islamic Sharia to torture HUMANS even today in Sri Lanka!

Hindus cannot be easy targets any more. A Hindu Priest was thrown in boiling Tar in Panadura by Catholic Sinhala mobs in 1958 and no Buddhist involved. Now the Catholics make profits through conflicts in both sides. Tamil catholics support LTTE. Sinhala Catholic keep silence!

If Nihal Fernando is from coastal area, his ancestry cannot be SINHALA at all!

  22. M.S.MUdali Says:

    Lorenz:
Instead of tablets “FISH” is still the cheapest and affordable source of protiens!

In the human history, humans never be herbivorous. When the religious concepts surfaced in India, all these became matters to consider or to follow.

In the food chain, one animal eat another and maintain the “balance of the nature”. But humans though they are part of the animal kingdom grows in numbers. Now that destroy the “NATURE”.

No religion can stop HUMANS from GREED! But philosophies like Buddhism can reduce the GREED if that is followed because Hinduism/Buddhism do not advocate materialism but the religions created in the desert support Material wealth as part of religion.

GREED for Material Wealth always endup in WAR, INVASION, SLAVERY, COLONIALISM etc., That is the history. How can we stop the greed of the Humans?

If Sri Lankans cannot control the population growth, how can we reasonably share the national wealth among us?

  23. Fran Diaz Says:

Rice plus Beans (Dhal, Mung, Soy, etc) if eaten together makes it possible for the human body to produce Complete Proteins.
It is only for those used to a high level of protein intake (such as Athletes who are vegetarians), or old or sickly people who cannot eat much, wishing to make a transition to a non-meat diet, that Amino Acid pills should be given. These Complete Proteins are equal in value to eating complete proteins from fish or meat.
Except for sea fish, all the animals slaughtered for food are grown specially for that purpose. Old milk cows are also slaughtered.
If the wish is to refrain from killing animals for food, then the ancient dietary patterns of Lanka & India are ideal. Meat dishes were usually reserved only for the royal tables.

I might add that Nature maintains a good balance among animal species without human interference. Human beings grow animals specially for slaughter. No other species on earth does just that.
Also, once a taste is developed for fish or meat, people find it difficult to stop eating these foods. After WW I&II, in Europe especially, the amount of meat on the table determined a persons social status. So people have various self set up barriers to overcome in order to be Vegetarians. Since vegetarian food is better for human health, it is a goal worth striving for. Actually, in the end, vegetarian food is far more tasty too !

  24. Nihal Fernando Says:

MUdali – your name tells everything about you. I am against birth control but when I come across morons like you I really beleive in it.

I salute Sajith for the polite way he counters the comments by others.

  25. Sajith Says:

Does this mean we should stop hasseling Tamil Hindus because we too harm animals? If that is the case I am happy as a Buddhist. Gauthama Buddha would never tolerate we using elephants caputured from the wild, kept away from nature and used to carry a casket containing His relics. Same way Hindus go against their teachings and do animal sacrifices. Jesus and Mohammad never expected people to torture and kill animals as happening now to celebrate them. Let karma take over. We should not ban it but stop cruelty to animals whenever we can. But kill stray dogs. mosquittos, cockroaches, rats.

  26. M.S.MUdali Says:

    Franz:
I agree with you but who has to take more protien in the current world? I think the hard working population like farm workers, fishermen and other manual work force. I tell the people in the offices do not need much energy.

Our FINANCIAL patterns do not support the workers to get more energy because most of the hard working people are getting less salary.

  27. M.S.MUdali Says:

Fernando- I am not wrong in my comments about you. You started barking at TAMILS for no reason. Hetti Veediya or Wellawatte has nothing to do with the subject of this thread but you are a Catholic moron started barking while your Church is always want to kill people for the sake of GOD. That is called INQUISITION. Muslims are asked to kill other people for the sake GOD. That is called JIHAD.

You are trying to fool around here! Sajith and I believe in Karma but you never. That is the different.

What the hell you know from my name?

  28. Nihal Fernando Says:

MUdali – How do you know my caste and religion? If you think that you are a jack of all trades it is something that I can inspire but it seems that you are a jack of no trade at all. You are a hypocrite. At the very begining I have already mentioned that I am not a believer in God. I mentioned about Hetti Vidiya and Wellawatta not to bark at Tamils but to point out that they can live anywhere mingling with majority Sinhala in Sri Lanka but Sinhalese are unable to do so. You have even mis-quoted the meaning of the word ‘inquisition’ It was the Holy Office appointed by the Roman Catholic Church during 15th to 17th century to suppress heresy. You are barking up the wrong tree. You are what you were and you will be what you are.

  29. Fran Diaz Says:

Robert Knox (1681) recorded in his diaries that he found the local population in Lanka to be a healthy people. At that time the local diet was of locally grown rice (mostly brown rice), and fruits, vegetables & nuts from the gardens or from the wild.

In the West, what is considered to be the best diet are high-quality proteins consisting of low-fat milk, fruit smoothies, cereals and fruit yoghurt (not meat, fish or eggs), along with high-quality carbohydrates in the form of whole grains
(brown rice is best) & fruits plus veggies, is recommended. Muscle build up is done through strength training, which our local farmers get through physical work. Fats are for ENERGY, taken in moderation :

    Very Good Quality Fats
The higher the number in brackets the better

(2.3) Avocado, (2.2) Canola oil, (2.2) Almond butter, (2.0) Almonds, & also Olive Oil (high fat though monounsaturated)

    Good Quality Fats
    (1.6) Cashews , (1.1) Peanuts

    Poor-Quality Fats

(0.9) Lard, (0.4) Butter, (0.2) Safflower oil, (0.2) Soybean oil

Trans Fats such as MARGARINE must be avoided at all cost.

This is just a general view on nutrition. I am not a Nutritionist.

  30. M.S.MUdali Says:

    Fernando:
I never claim that I am a jack of all trades but you thought so. It is not my problem. Did you ever try to buy land in Jaffna?

Inquisition .. Catholics used it to suppress other opnions and killed whoever refused to convert!

  31. Nihal Fernando Says:
