In a recent address, US Ambassador Butenis had said, “…Obama and Hilary Cliton have made it a priority to reinvigorate America’s relationships with the world… Built new ones to meet shared challenges fromƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ climate change to ending the threat to nuclear weapons, to fight disease and poverty in countries like Sri Lanka…and I am proud to be part of it…” And she had been smiling.

Then in cables sent to the US Dept.,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ she had made allegations that the responsibility for many of the alleged war crimes rested with President Rajapakse, his brothers and Opposition Presidential candidate Sarath Fonseka. The irony is that, if Sarath Fonseka is labelled as ‘war criminal’ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ how did the TNA,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ one time mouthpieceƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ of the LTTE, support him at the elections?

Further, cables released by WikiLeaks say that the US Envoy Butenis hadƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ observed little progress in Sri Lanka’s investigations of alleged HR abuses during the final stages of the war. During this stage the govt was involved in a ‘Human rescue operation’ and it was the LTTE which went on a killing spree of civilians escaping to govt controlled areas. ButƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ she had made no comments about HR abuses by the LTTE. May be because for her they were a different type of ‘terrorists’ as the LTTEƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ appeared to be from a US favoured terrorist organisation. And that was why towards the end of the war the US offered to rescue them. Thus US tried to put Sri Lanka which was struggling to free herself from terroristsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ back in shackles. The US targetted the morale of the people and the soldiers fighting the war.

During the Vietnamese war, the US used ‘Agent Orange’ to gas Vietnamese civilians and carpet bombed neutral Cambodia. Now US is slaughtering civilians in Afghanistan and Iraq. From this background, Butenis, inƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ‘sheeps clothing’, is preaching about human rights to Sri Lanka which fought a 30 year war to salvage the countryƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ from terrorists.
