Peter Showler’s article “Detained Tamils case exposes Canada’s brutal refugee policy” also exposes  how Canada was naive when we screamed and yelled at the Sri Lankan Government  during the first four weeks after the 300,000 Tamils were rescued  on May 18, 2009, from the clutches of the Tamil Tigers who were being held as a human shield, and were placed in temporary welfare camps, asking the them to let these Tamil refugees go.
The Sri Lankan Government was judicious to ignore our screams as they knew that there were over a million and a half  landmines that had been planted  by the Tamil Tigers in the land that was captured, the infra-structures destroyed so were the thousands of  homes of the refugees during the 27 year long war.  The question that  the Sri Lankan Governmment asked us Canadians was “To let these Tamils go where?”
Two years since the war was over, 90 pecent of  the terrain had been demined, the infrastructures restored and the houses  been renovated  and new ones built and the Tamil people have been sent to their homes with seed money to start their homes and businesses.  Schools  have been rebuilt for the children and most of the older ones have sat for University entrance exams wanting to become lawyers, engineers and doctors. At the present there are just 16,000  refugees to be resettled which will be done no sooner the remaining demining is completed.
Now I understand why Canada has taken over eight months to process most of the 492 Tamil refugees who arrived on Sun Sea last August.
I am glad that the Sri Lankan Government did not scream at the Canadian government asking us to let her 492 Sri Lankans go from our detention camps as they realized that the task was not  magical nor easy.
This is quite a laughable irony.
