Press Release

CMC UPFA candidate Mr. Milinda Moragoda visited 15 neighbourhoods of Colombo North and he interacted with a variety of residents from all communities, including a fishing community in Mutwalla.

He visited several community centres which were badly dilapidated and leftabandoned. Some of these were only half finished and had never been completed. And also he visited several playing fields which were in ruins.

Many of the residents in the area told me that undesirables and criminalsfrequented these areas making them a danger to the community. Many residents felt frustrated and helpless. They told Mr. Moragoda that many politicianscome and have a look around, but never do anything.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The young people in the area were full of expectations. MR. Moragoda explained to them his intention to develop the playing fields and to set up sports clubs that would help administer these grounds. He also explained that if these were refurbished, that they, too, would have to take part in looking after them, so that they could become stakeholders in their neighbourhoods. Along the way, a man and a woman stopped his car to show him a garbage dump and said that five children in their community were sick and in hospital with infections due to this. They pleaded with Mr. Moragoda to do something. There are so many pressing issues that urgently need attention.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Mr. Moragoda add I see a lot of scope for the private and non-governmental sector to partner with the CMC and the involvement of the community is vital. There is much work to be done. I hope that we do not get distractedby politics.

This is nothing new. Every candidate, during election time visits neighbourhoods, not thirteen(13) but hundreds (100) to secure votes. Some even “walk” even though they have supper luxury mode of transport. Of course, Mr. Moragoda has put out a 12 point programme. That is also nothing new. That are all promises.

I was listening to a discussion in City FM conducted by the Chairman SLBC with Rev. Elle Gunwansa Maha Nayaka Thero and Mr. Lalith Weeratunga – the Secretary to the HE President. I hope Mr. Moragoda would have listened to it and made notes on the remarks made specially by Rev. Elle Gunawansa Maha Nayake Thero. I respect this priest and adore him for “hitting the nail on the head without fear or favour”. He said that some “elite” class of people who have made their home Colombo think that they can and should only run the administration of this Institution.

So Mr. Moragoda, we know that you could not secure a Parliamentary seat at the last General Election from the Colombo District. You were voted out. Then you had a “Political Party” of your own. You dissolved it and joined the SLFP immeadiatly before the nominations for the CMC. Before that you were an important Minister in Ranil Wickramasinghe’s cabinet and did spade work during the “infamous” CFA (Cease-fire Agreement) with LTTE.

I hope you have changed from the above status and made a firm decision to work with the present Government to continue and give your unstinted support to make Colombo the very attractive door opening to the entire country, which is being done none other than Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

In your “drive” arounds, please muster the support of the voters towards this effort. Most importantly this city must be cleaned of “UNDERWORLD OPERATIVES” and “Beautification” will originate by itself. Please campaign very effectively towards it. I wish to read that effort in your next “Press Releases”. GOOD LUCK
