Based on the reports received beginning of second week of September 2011 on the contentious issue of road construction in Sinharaja Forest, the above petition was closed on 12 September and submitted to the Presidential Secretariat of Sri Lanka electronically and on 13 September 2011 the Hardcopy posted through Registered mail.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Although acknowledgement of the submissions was requested, up to this date there had been no official acknowledgement or response from the Office of the President of Sri Lanka.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Thanks to the intervention by World Heritage Convention under UNESCO, the construction of the road has been suspended and they have called for a Report from the Environment Ministry.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The Petition was circulated to the public privately through a network of email, through Facebook and through the prestigious journal Lankaweb.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  The idea of the Petition was the brainchild of Daya Hettiaarachchi of Toronto, who through an official delegation, met both the President and the Minister of Environment in New York recently, to discuss various issues pertaining to Sri Lanka. ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ During the brief audition, Minister Yapa has given an assurance to the delegation that no road will be constructed in the precincts of Sinharaja.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Provided the Office of the President responds to the Petition, the content will be published on Lankaweb and on Facebook.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ We greatly appreciate and thank all those who signed the Petition and anticipate continued support and vigilance on this very important environmental issue.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  To enhance public awareness on this subject, a Video has been created on ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”The Preservation Of Sinharaja Forest to EternityƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ and published both on YouTube and PowerPoint, the links given below.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

Sometimes, I wonder why these Sinhalese went to live in Australia, for they write a lot about our forests, etc, etc, but won’t come back leaving that Aussie passport to serve Mother Lanka!
