Dear Sir:
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
It is reported that Canada had again raised alleged accountability issues in Sri Lanka under any other business at the end of the third session of ministerial-level talks. There is no indication as to what Sri Lanka’s response was on “issues of accountability” but I hope that Sri Lanka raised the issue of Canada’s accountability for LTTE terrorism in Sri Lanka. It is not a mere allegation but a fact that the LTTE supporters in Canada raised money through various illegal means and sent two million dollars a month for decades for LTTE terrorismƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  while successive Canadian governments and politicians, particularly in the Toronto area, provided political support going so far as to attend fund raising eventsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ of the LTTE.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Further, it was established by Canadian security authorities that the cheque for the bombing of the Central Bank was sent from Canada. As reported in the Canadian media this year, two well known LTTE supporters were candidates for the Conservatives (Mr. Harper’s party)ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ so his statements are based on getting Tamil votes in the Toronto area. Domestic Canadian politics is what is driving his agenda on Sri Lanka.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
It has also been mentioned in media reports that Mr. HarperƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ on discussions with President RajapakseƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  had mentioned that it was his government that had banned the LTTE and that the President had stated that he was aware of that. I hope the President alsoƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ let him know that he was aware of the funding of terrorism in Sri Lanka by Canadian citizens which makesƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Canada accountable for the destruction of the economy as well as the thousands killed and wounded. It is necessary to ask that Canada implement an immediate inquiry into these crimes and violations of the human rights of all Sri Lankans by Canadian citizens and have it ready before 2013.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ At this summit leaders reiterated commitment for prevention of the use of their territories for the support, incitement to violence or commission of terrorist acts and most importantlyƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ action to stop terrorist financing and action against terrorist front organizations.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ How do theseƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ countries that are criticising Sri Lanka such as Canada, Britain and AustraliaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ explain the activities of organizations such as the Global Tamil Forum, The Trans National Government of Eelam etc. who are operating freely in their midst?ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Should Sri Lanka not ask them to follow through on their commitment?
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
The actions of the LTTE rump was clearly evident at this summit. It is clear that Sri Lanka needs to implement a task force immediately to deal with the propaganda of the LTTE overseas and not be taken by surprise at every turn.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Why is it that thousands are being spent on useless propaganda firms and that the end result is what was on show in Australia where the LTTE rump had a field day and Sri Lanka’s response was just reactive? When is Sri Lanka going to counter LTTE propaganda effectively? During the period of the war it was LTTE propaganda that brought international pressure on Sri Lanka to capitulate and give in to LTTE demands. Now, after the war it seems that Colombo is again in a state of slumber, unprepared and permitting the country to be pressured and humiliated by leaders of countries and the so-called human rights organisations who are well funded and have officials who are LTTE supportersƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ who are carrying the LTTE message into these gatherings.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Because Sri LankaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  is not paying attention toƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ what is taking placeƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ inƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  these countriesƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ where there are large numbers of LTTE supporters and taking effective actions to deal with this external threat to it’s stability andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ hard won war on terrorism, ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the result is what the world saw in Perth last week.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
Yours truly,
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

One Response to “CHOGM 2011”

  1. S de Silva Says:

Thank you Ira – When will our Sri Lankans learn to deal with these allegations in a robust manner. As you say, whenever we are called into account, we must in return, in the same breath, call into account and seek compensation from those very countries who allowed the LTTE to collect funds, prosper, and create the terrorist problems in Sri Lanka in the first place. This is one sure way to shut them up but as usual the GoSL has not yet woken up to take the opportunity – S de Silva – London
