It is interesting to note that these Tamils went by ship to India first. It is logical as Tamil Nadu, India is their homeland. There areƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ sixty oneƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ million Tamils living there, the State Government is all Tamil, regularly lectures Sri Lanka and threatens to invade Sri Lanka if it does not do as Tamil Nadu wishes and dictates about how the Tamils living in Sri Lanka should be treated etc.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ and pushes the central government of India to do the same.

If these Tamils landed safely in India where they have their Tamil only state, which is what they wanted to create in the north of Sri Lanka by extreme terrorism for thirty years, why would they want to leave for Canada other than that they are not genuine refugees but economic refugees who are merely abusing the Canadian immigration system for their own benefit andƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ to do so are concocting liesƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ aboutƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ conditions in Sri Lanka. The writer states that they fear that they will be “killed if they return to Sri Lanka”! How then can the writer and these Tamils, who perhaps gaveƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ him this information, explain why thousands of Sri Lankan Tamils are returning to Sri Lanka fromƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ India and other parts of the world as reported by the U.N.? ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Further, the Tamils in Sri Lanka are living normal lives and this fact has been confirmed by the recent visit to the country by two members of the Canadian parliament.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ In a press release after visiting Sri Lanka these two M.P.’s stated “the human rights situation in Sri Lanka has greatly improved and itƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ was understood that there is no discrimination against the Tamil community in Sri Lanka”.

If they do not want to return to Sri Lanka why not send them to Tamil Nadu where they can realise their dream of living only withƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ other Tamils? ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Mr. ToewsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ would not have a problem, the Tamils would be glad toƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ go “home” and Canadian taxpayers would be spared the high costsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ they are forced to payƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ for these shiploads of people who are trying to enter Canada illegally – a win-win situation all round.

Tamil Nadu is a state of India (like Toronto is a part (state) of Canada) !
FYI, 150,000 Srilanka Tamils in India ( most of then in TN) only 1,000 returned back to date ( even SLR 50,000 deposit offered to them for return)
so please tell me why they do not want to return bank their mother land ???? even war finishe 119/05/2009 !

Dear lingamAndy, Ira de Silva’s argument is based on “Basic principles of asylum”. For those unfortunate souls, now destitute in Togo, the “FIRST PORT OF CALL” was India. That is where they should seek asylum. There is no need for “COUNTRY SHOPPING”.
lingam, your statement about Sri Lankan Tamils in India is absurd. Maybe they don’t want to come back. Maybe they are doing well. There are 900,000 “Tamils of Indian origin” in Sri Lanka. They don’t want to go back to India. They have become a valued, integral part of Sri Lankan society and we want all of them to stay. lingam, let me tell you what is wrong with North of Sri Lanka. Next time you meet a “Sri Lankan of Indian Tamil origin”, ask that person whether he/she prefers to go to Jaffna or Colombo? In Jaffna, “Tamils of Indian origin” are treated with disdain. In Colombo they are treated like brothers.

Mr lingamAndy must remeber the sad situation of Jaffna still. Political poweris still with the TNA the dying remnants of LTTE. Muslims who were ethnically cleansed to Puttlam in 1990s are returning but slowly. The indian aid to rebuild the rail connection seems to be coming very very slowly.
Migrants out of Jaffna know the inner nature of Fascism, and the caste ridden hell hole of the previous times where murdersof political leaders like Alfred Duraiappa took place in public. The sabre rattling of Vaiko and groups is there in Tamil Nadu but who are not as powerfuldueto stronger nature of Indian Army.
