President proposes a new global economic order at Rio

President Mahinda Rajapaksa, speaking at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil yesterday (20), emphasized that for all the initiatives taken 20 years ago with respect to ensuring the health of the planet, ‘long standing problems such as poverty, hunger, mismanagement of resources in addition to climate change, water scarcity, energy crisis and spread of disease’ have continued to plague the world, especially developing countries.
‘A cardinal principle governing the behavior of nations in the modern word should be recognition of the principle that the resources of a country, whether on land or in the oceans, belong to the people of that country. Their enjoyment of these resources for the improvement of their economic and social condition should in no way be hampered by encroachment on these resources by external interests. Protection of the sea bed and ocean floor against damage by the use of environment unfriendly methods of fishing, such as bottom trawling, should be guaranteed by international law and practice, by means of effective remedies,’ he said.
The President also stressed that ‘a solution for this crisis requires a new global economic order which is fair and equitable including debt relief, fair trade and external funding. Any tool in this regard should respect the purposes and principles already enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and other Conventions on the Environment. It should not undermine the sovereignty of States over their natural resources.’ – Full Speech

A new global economic order can emerge only after a new global military order. That is not likely to happen for another era.
When the global policeman, judge, human rights activist and the moral guardian are all one nation, there cannot be a new global economic order.

MR is wasting his time at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development or is he on holiday?
Not many head of states are attending this Conference, maybe he got not much to do in SL!
