Defending Islam and Muslims-Response to ‘Laws and Religion – Some Concerns of Sinhala Buddhists’
Posted on January 20th, 2013

Hameed Abdul Karim

Shenali WadugeƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s article on ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”Laws and Religion: Some Concerns of Sinhala BuddhistsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ appearing in the Daily News on the 12th of January 2013 is the latest in a long series of scaremongering among Sinhala Buddhists against Sri Lankan Muslims. Any first time reader would get the impressions that we Muslims are a bunch of good for nothing types living off the generosity of Sinhala Buddhists with a view to wipe out ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”Sinhala BuddhismƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ from the country. Our centuries old long, cordial and peaceful existence with all communities in the country seems to count for nothing in her uncalled for vituperative remarks.

Much of what she has said has already appeared on hundreds of racist hate spewing websites in Sri Lanka and around the world.

Ideally in a democracy there is no such thing as a minority, but since we live in a diluted form of democracy let us, for argument sake, concede that there are minorities like the Muslims, Christians and Hindus. Would this then mean that we are children of a lesser god because of a paucity of numbers and that we should live according to the dictates set out by Ms. Shenali Waduge? As ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”minoritiesƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢, shouldnƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t we have equal rights with the Sinhala Buddhists to fulfill our obligations in accordance with our respective faiths?

Radical Muslims

Ms. Waduge claims that Buddhist archeological and historical cultural monuments in the country are being destroyed, but doesnƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t name the culprits. A lot of treasurer hunters that have been caught happen to be Sinhala Buddhists, which includes Buddhist monks. Only the other day media reports said that 1020 persons had been arrested for treasure hunting in 2012 alone. Most of them were members of the armed forces.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Among them were 7 Sinhala Buddhist monks, who happened to be the masterminds behind the thefts.

Additional media reports indicate that Buddha statues had been destroyed in search of treasure hidden inside them. None of the culprits caught happen to be ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”radicalƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ Muslims as she calls us. The theft at the Museum was not carried out by ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”radicalƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ Muslims.

The writer claims ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”we (Sinhala Buddhists)are concerned because there is an emerging conflict in Islamic laws with country/international law (sic), but doesnƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t give us any specifics. For centuries now Muslims have had their own ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ marriage, divorce and inheritance laws and this has not bothered anybody until Ms. Shenali Waduge, our version of AustraliaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s Pauline Hanson, made an entrance. Incidentally Pauline Hanson was an extremist white and wanted to end AustraliaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s multiculturalism. AustraliaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s multiculturalism includes Sinhala Buddhists who emigrated from Sri Lanka. Wonder if Ms. Waduge would agree with her racist views?ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Pauline Hanson wanted Australia to be a ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”White OnlyƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ country (after taking it from the blacks, of course). But to the credit of the Australians the ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”majorityƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ and the ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”minoritiesƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ got rid of her at the very first opportunity.

Sharia

Sharia law has contributed immensely to international law and really she should read the works of the internationally renowned Sri Lankan judge Weeramantry on the subject of Sharia for her own elucidation. Is she aware that the word ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”canonƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ as in law is derived from the word ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”qanoonƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢? Or is she aware that the black cloaks that both female and male lawyers wear is a contribution made by Arabs practicing Sharia law? I am not an expert on Sharia but I think she is absolutely off the mark when she says that a non-Muslim cannot appear in Sharia courts to give evidence.

And when she claims that non-Muslim have no equal rights in Muslim countries she is off the mark again. In Iran there is a Jewish community that has no problems whatsoever, neither in Egypt or Morocco or Turkey where to this day Jews live and celebrate their faith and festivals under the Sharia law which guarantees them the rights to follow their own laws and religion. Very recently a major Jewish festival to commemorate a Jewish scholar buried in Rabat was celebrated with religious fervour and zeal at his tomb in Rabat. It would be a good idea if she checks on such events before making blanket statements.

Pakistan

Of course she will quote Pakistan as a case in point. Minorities are certainly are in more than a spot of bother over there, but then so are the Muslims in a country thatƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s gone mad. I had the good fortune of meeting with the Pakistani Bishop when he was here on a short visit. He was mourning over what has happened to his beloved Pakistan and wished that Christians and Muslims could live together again in peace and harmony in his country like inƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚¦.. guess where? Palestine!

But to their credit it must be said that the Pakistani Judiciary and civil societies are taking the fight to the lunatic fringe called the Pakistan Taliban despite the acrobatics of a hopelessly corrupt government.

Halaal

Muslims have always consumed halaal foods since the emergence of Islam and for Ms. Waduge to claim that this is something new is ludicrous, to say the least. The need for halaal labels has come about because of exports of food items and cosmetics and the establishment of restaurants owned up by non-Muslim enterprises like McDonalds or KFC or Pizza Hut. I wonƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t go into the details of the need for halaal foods, since the writer herself had not raised the issue. But what I must put on record is that it was these non-Muslim establishments that approached Muslims religious leaders to certify their products as ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”halaalƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ so that they could cater to the Muslims. And the cost of the halaal certificate for each meal would not amount to more than 3 cents.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  If Ms. Waduge and those like her donƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t wish to consume halaal food thatƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s their business. Nobody is interested in shoving halaal food down their throats.

By the way, I wonder if she would condemn Jews in the same way she insults Muslims because they too have this business of halaal attached to their consumption of animal products. The only difference is in the terminology. They call it ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”kosherƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢, Muslims call it ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”halaalƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢. Come let us see you, Ms. Waduge, paint the Jews with the same brush you paint the Muslims with! Watch out. You will be called an anti-Semite and thatƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s the worst label you can get in the world today. Being an Islamophobe is acceptable and you can wear that title like a badge of honour.

Mithya drushtika

Ms. Waduge goes on to say that according to Islam non-Muslims are classified as ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”non believersƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ and ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”infidelsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢. This too is about terminology. Would she consider a non Sinhala Buddhist as a ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”believerƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ in Buddhism? And what does the word ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”infidelƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ mean? It simply means a person belonging to another faith and nothing else.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Would I, as a Muslim, be equal in faith to a Sinhala Buddhist? Would Muslims or Christians or Hindus be allowed to conduct their religious rituals in a Buddhist temple? While we are on the subject tell me how Sinhala Buddhists classify non-Sinhala Buddhists. Why, they call them Mithya drusthika. Mithya means ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”liesƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ or ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”unholyƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢. So there you are, non-Buddhists are ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”liarsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ or ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”unholyƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢. But I have no grouse with that. If thatƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s the Buddhist terminology, so be it.

It is true that Sinhala Buddhists and Muslims are not the same in faith, obviously. But we are one in humanity. The QurƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢an says that we were all created into different tribes and nations speaking different languages so that we will recognise each other and not spite each other. Herein you find advice for us all to celebrate humanity in all its diversity. The thought that somehow the Muslims are going to wipe of Buddhism with financial help from the Arab League, as one Buddhist monk claimed at the Law College protest is absurd, to say the least. If the 5 centuries of occupation by three western imperialist forces, couldnƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t achieve that objective what chances are there for the Arab League.

Madrasas

Then the writer moves on to yet another issue. Madrasas. In Madrasas Muslim children are taught to recite the QurƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢an and learn adab (manners) among other religious rituals. ItƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s very much like the Daham Pasals or Sunday School for Christians. Why on earth would Ms. Waduge be against such religious education beats me. The matter of Muslims opting for ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”international schoolsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ is quite clear and thatƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”s because Muslim children find it extremely difficult, and in some cases virtually impossible, to enter established schools and so thatƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s the reason why they have opened up other avenues to educate their children. Besides, Muslim children are not the only ones who get an education in ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”international schoolƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢. I am sure there will be many Sinhala Buddhist children in ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”international schoolsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ and why parents shouldnƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t educate their children according to their will and wish to satisfy the likes of Ms. Waduge and her fellow travelers boggles the mind. If parents want to educate their children in ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”international schoolsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢, then they have every right to do that.

Employment

I know for a fact that there are thousands and thousands of Sinhala Buddhists employed in Muslim establishments. One look at garment factories owned by Muslims would dispel Ms. WadugeƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s grouse that Muslims only employ Muslims. At least one business concern that I know of employs 40 thousand Sinhala Buddhists out of a staff of 45 thousand. There are many more such establishments but going into details would take too much space. But of course she can always find something to grumble about. Maybe she might claim that Sinhala Buddhists are being ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”exploitedƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ at these factories and maybe sheƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ll go on to claim these are ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”sweat shopsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢. When you want to pick a bone you will find many around. Maybe she should indentify Muslim business concerns and check the EPF contributions at the Labour department before making baseless, irresponsible and inflammatory statements.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  And whilst we are on that subject, it would be nice if she could check up how many Muslims or non-Buddhists are employed in Sinhala Buddhist establishments like Maliban Biscuits or Raigam Industries. Or for that matter the number of non-Sinhala Buddhists in government institutions. Are non-Sinhala Buddhists employed in government institutions in relation to their ethnic quotas as was supposed to be the case at one point of time?

Closed on Fridays

One aspect I found rather ironic, and also funny, is Ms. Shenali WadugeƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s grouse that Muslim establishments shut down for Friday prayers. She and her ilk want Sinhala Buddhists to shun Muslim businesses and then we find her complaining that Muslims close shop for Friday prayers! Surely sheƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s not supposed to patronise Muslim businesses according to her ideology! Really I canƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t see her logic on this take. Moreover, the time for Friday prayers coincide with the lunch break during which most establishments are closed, including government institutions.

Islamic fundamentalists

Shenali Waduge claims that Islamic ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”fundamentalistsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ are inciting violence against Buddhists in ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”East Sri Lanka encroaching upon land given to them by Sinhalese kings and demolish Buddhist sitesƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢. Well, for starters if the land was given to them by Sinhala kings then the question of encroachment doesnƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t arise, does it? In this case it would be the Sinhala Buddhists who would be encroachers if the law of the land is anything to go by. Besides if what she says is right then there is legal redress. They can take the matter to courts and seek redress there.

Hate Campaign

What really takes the cake from Shenali WadugeƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s vituperative article is when she suggests that Islam is not a peaceful religion because ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”almost all the all the major conflicts in the world are Muslim orientatedƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢. Well, after the collapse of communism, Islam and the Muslims became the new enemy. And the West needs an enemy to forge its imperialism. And as it turns out the Muslims are fighting a rearguard action in places like Afghanistan, Kashmir, Palestine (alongside Christians) etc. Perhaps she is unaware of the U.SƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s war in Vietnam, Kampuchea, Korea and Laos where Buddhists were being slaughtered like nobodyƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s business. Conservative estimates indicate that no less than one million were butchered in Korea alone and over 3 million in Vietnam. Would she have minded if at that point of time if a swanky American imperialist came across and said these wars were Buddhist centred, because all these countries were Buddhist nations?

Perhaps she is also unaware that the propaganda spewed by the Western media machine against Islam and the Muslims in the west is similar to the one against the Jews prior to the holocaust? And what would she say if the Nazis come around and tell her that conflict was Jewish centred?

Is she aware of the thousands of Muslims who were slaughtered in Bosnia-Herzegovina especially at Srebrenica? Would she have the courage to tell the mothers who lost their sons in the Srebrenica that the slaughter was on account of their fault for being Muslims or that it was ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”Muslims centredƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢? Well, thankfully, some Europeans donƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t think like her. The Serbian criminals who committed these crimes were tracked down and taken to The Hague and punished for their war crimes.

The last portion of her article is based entirely on hate spewing websites run by extreme right wing racists like the EDL of the UK and other similar racist organsiations in Europe and the U.S. very much similar to the anti Islam and anti Muslim websites run by an utterly insensitive and irresponsible sections of our people. The fear mongering websites in Europe and the rest of the west claimed that Islam was to overtake Christianity and that Muslims would be in the majority in Europe come 2040 or thereabouts. The narrators of these false statements made their pitch in sepulchral voices that you hear in Hollywood trailers announcing the arrival of the latest horror movie. But saner counsel has prevailed and Church leaders have blighted these myths. It was found that some of the people behind these websites were Neo-Nazis and fascist in outlook.

However, I agree with Shenali Waduge when she says we Muslims are ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”exclusiveƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢. ThatƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s largely because our ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”leadersƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ or ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”dealersƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ if you will do not espouse the cause of other communities and organsiations in the country when issues crop up now and then. One telling example was the absence of any Muslim individual or organisation of some standing like the Jamaitul Ullema from the university donsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ demand for a budget allocation of 6% for education.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  ItƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s about time we became ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”inclusivistsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ and reinforce our identity as Sri Lankan citizens.

SLMC

Ms. WadugeƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s contention that the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress is a radical Islamic party is entirely baseless. Some of us who know some of the members know only too well that most of them hardly care for those Muslims who voted for them. ThatƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s typical of most politicians around today and the Muslim Congress is no different in that aspect. And as a Muslim I wish they abided by the at least some of the basic tenets of Islam so that we could avoid the horse dealings that take place behind closed doors. But, alas, that is and will remain a plaintive cry in the wilderness.

Yes itƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s true that Rauf Hakeem had made a disparaging remark but to his credit he was quick to apologise. ShouldnƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢t Ms. Shenali Waduge take a cue from him and apologise for the very offensive remarks she has made in her article. As one who was born and bred in a multicultural environment in Colombo with lifelong friendships with members of all communities I feel hurt by the offensive nature of her article. Yes, maybe she should apologise.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  ItƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s the honourable thing to do.

Shenali defends sinhala buddhists and you defend muslims i dont see anything wrong with that and thank allah we have in our midts a person like shenali the funny thing about defenders of muslims is that they ignore the horendous regime saudi arabia, the horendous passages of quaran(few times we quoted but no response), wahhabi threat stemming from east.

  2. Lorenzo Says:

SL has to DEFEAT Islam extremism.

The good news is ALL Christian countries are with us in our fight against Islam extremism. ALL Hindu countries are with us. ALL Buddhist countries are with us (Japan, Thailand, BURMA (well done you beauty!!) and China leading the way. ALL Jewish countries are with us.

Lets go gangbusters to destry this fundamentalism!

Hameed Abdul Karim, it is you who should apologise not Shenali, for the violence AROUND the world, not just SL.

SLs are not exceptions. We are just another nation suffering due to the epidemic of the “religion of peace”.

Shenali Waduge has correctly pointed out what seems to be happening in Sri Lanka now. It is not smoke without fire. When I was in the country a few months ago, I noticed that the Muslims are tying to show their presence . There were so many women wearing black with covered faces. This I have not seen during my earlier visits. Also, they were buying up properties in important areas and making them only Muslim areas. Of course, there is nothing wrong in them buying property that is for sale, but the problem is that the slowly move into these areas but will not sell back to a Sinhalese.
There are many countries that have strict Islamic laws and those who want such laws are free to move to those countries. Do not try to introduce them to Sri Lanka.
I would like Mr categorically state that there is no sinister plan to slowly make Sri Lanka an Islamic country.

  4. Voice123 Says:

    Mr Hameed Karim,

What do you mean Jews enjoy equal rights under Sharia? Isnt it true that Jews and Christians are “infidels” but “people of the book” and as such have certain rights under Sharia but must pay an extra tax called dhimmi tax or something or other. Also, their women have no rights whatsoever eg if they are raped, the women must either be killed or convert to Islam and marry the rapist. Is this false??

As for Buddhists, Hindus, African animists etc. They are beyond the pale. They have the same rights as animals only. They are known as “kaffar” and Muslims may kill them and enslave them without consequence. Is th is true or is this false?

    Straightforward questions Mr Hameed.

  5. Voice123 Says:

There is a mountain range south of Afghanistan, known as the Hindu Kush. During the Moghul era Afghan raiders would enter the Indian plains and kidnap scores of Indian Hindus and drag them through the mountain ranges into Afghanistan where they would be sold into slavery around the Muslim world. Many of them got killed in the process, hence the name “Hindu Kush” or “Crushed Hindus”. Is true Mr Hameed?

  6. Dilrook Says:

[Quote] As ‘minorities’, shouldn’t we have equal rights with the Sinhala Buddhists to fulfill our obligations in accordance with our respective faiths? [Unquote]

It is the individual (not the minority or the majority they belong to) who has the rights. Therefore as minorities, no minority community has equal rights comparable with Sinhala Buddhists as a community. Rights relate to individuals not to communities. Sri Lanka has been very accommodating towards Muslims in this regard to recognise Muslim holidays in the public calendar unlike any western democracy. Sri Lanka has also included Muslim Law in its legal system which no western democracy has done. It is time to reassess fundamental democratic concepts to see if separate laws are needed for Muslims, Kandyans, Mukkuwas and Malabaris.

Muslims in Sri Lanka are mostly South Indian and Afghan illegal immigrants during British rule and Malays who also made their way during that time as British slave soldiers.

There was a very small Muslim community before made up mostly by Kerala and African Muslims. King Senerath of Kandy allocated some land for Muslims in the east. However, it was a very small area which could be easily rounded up by Kandyan troops if need be. The good king would never have known the disaster that awaited the nation. It was done to deter other invaders and to amalgamate Muslims into one manageable area.

What Shenali says is timely and moderate. She is certainly no racist as she has highlighted the grave plight of innocent Muslims from Afghanistan to Palestine in many articles. In my view Karim is a Muslim racist in the likes of Idi Amin in justifying violence, intolerance and extremism.

There is no good contribution of Shalia law to any internationally recognized legal fraternity. Weeramanthri is not a world legal luminary. Colour and shape of cloaks are mere nothing in comparison to the substance. The legal system in Sri Lanka is based on all the ordinances and laws passed by legislature and the Roman Dutch Law which is the common law. Muslim Law is also part of the law of the land which must not be confused with Sharia Law. In fact, the world community is increasingly interested in halting the spread of Sharia Law than honouring it.

A large number of Muslim ministers and public officers are currently in service. They include the Minister of Justice, Bank of Ceylon CEO, former ministers of petroleum, transport, foreign affairs, health, Muslim affairs just to name a few. Most Muslim owned business establishments only employ Muslims in senior management positions whereas Sinhala owned establishments are multi ethnic at the senior level. Various Muslim enterprises operate under Sinhala names (for instance Kandurata, HEMAS) where the directors are mostly Muslims.

A large number of Muslim offenders were arrested for treasure hunting but the Ministry of Justice under a Muslim politician let them get off. Muhudu Maha Viharaya, Maligawatte Buddhist Viharaya, Dighawapi and surrounds are good examples of Muslim offenders damaging Sinhala Buddhist heritage of the island.

Muslims have remained mostly peaceful after 1915. However, given the world and local events lately, it is not likely to remain so.

Debating the matter is a very healthy way to bring all matters to the table and sort them out. Unfortunately, Karim has not answered any wide public concern brought out by Shenali. He has instead gone on a tangent to attack the messenger as it commonly takes place in the Middle East which is another concern.

The danger of the inability to come up with a rational argument is these matters will remain unresolved.

We thank Shenali for bringing up these valid concerns that cannot be brushed under the carpet and hope the likes of Karim can provide an explanation acceptable to the Sinhala Buddhist nation of Sri Lanka.

“In Iran there is a Jewish community that has no problems whatsoever, neither in Egypt or Morocco or Turkey where to this day Jews live and celebrate their faith and festivals under the Sharia law which guarantees them the rights to follow their own laws and religion.”

    This is a disgusting joke.

Iranian Islam leader has vowed to wipe out the Jewish state from the world map with a nuclear bomb!!
Jews in Iran are prevented from leaving Iran and time to time killed for allegedly spying on the nuclear bomb program!

Egyptian Jews and Croptic Christians are killed in their thousands every year!!!

Good that you mentioned Turkey. Remember the Armenian Genocide of 1920 by Turkish Muslims?

Why not mention Buddhists in Bangladesh, Thailand, Nalanda, Sindh, Malaya, Maldives?

Why the Hindus in Pakistan in 1947! MILLIONS killed.

    9/11 Akbars who killed 1,200?

Beslan school killers, Moscow Opera house killers, Mumbai killers?

I forgot, the original Arabic faith followers of Madina?

Have you seen signs that say,’THERE IS NO GOD BUT ALLAH’ displayed at the back of many three wheelers plying around Maradana area? I have. Is it not openly telling other God believers; hay, your Gods like Vishnu, Katharagama, Siva, Jesus etc are fakes. I do not take such signs as praising one’s own God (Allah) but challenging the divinity of other Gods and religion of other God believers. That I suppose was modern way of following their Prophet, Muhammad. Let me explain:

When Muhammad started preaching about his Allah there was no opposition at the outset for people of Mecca believed many Gods like Lat, Ozza and Manah. They worshipped idols. As soon as he began preaching ‘One God’ or Allah or a unit that put all gods in to one, Meccans disapproved or rather persecuted him. Muhammad had a revelation full of instructive legends of many nations whom God had destroyed for their wickedness in rejecting the prophets who had been sent to them.

But, that revelation didn’t do much good to Muhammad or his supporters at all. When the persecution got intense, his followers started to run. So much so, in 616 Muhammad had to publish a revelation recognizing three Meccan idols, Lat, Ozza and Manah, as intercessors with Allah. In consequence of this concession to their faith, the Korayshites, his own tribe, fell down on their faces in adoration of Allah. Moreover, exiles in Abyssinia returned to their native land. By and by, he obtained other important converts, among them were Abu Bakr, Zobayr and Othman, afterwards the caliph.

However, Muhammad soon became ashamed of the weakness by which he had purchased public support. The verses were struck out of the Koran and the weakness was attributed to the devil. That is explained in 52 and 53verses of Sura xxii; “but God shall bring to naught that which Satan had suggested. Thus, shall God affirm his revelations, for God is All knowing, Wise. That he may make that which Satan hath injected, a trial to those in whose hearts is a disease, and whose hearts are hardened.” I have never heard Dr. Shakir Naik of Peace tv elaborate such verses and events.

Islam supposes to be peace. For Muhammad of cause, peace means a rule by his word – Koran. And, for that, any Gods other than Allah must be vanquished. So, he set to wipe out idol worshipping that was rampant at the time. In his trust to establish this unique ‘Islam – peace’, Muhammad took to front line and fought alongside his 300 men in his first fight at Badr to destroy idols. Fighting that Muhammad was at the forefront to destroy idols has turned out to be a precedent to all Muslims. From then on, the spread of Islam was by the sword, all the way.

I suppose we have take contents of Shenali’s writing in this type of a situation around us and not just halal and etc that Hammed talks about.

    Hameed Abdul Karim,

    Care to comment, please!

When Jews were perceived as having achieved too comfortable a position in Islamic society, anti Semitism would surface, often with devastating results of persecution and violence. Jews were generally viewed with contempt by their Muslim neighbors; peaceful coexistence between the two groups involved the subordination and degradation of the Jews.

    1) In the 9th century, Baghdad’s Caliph Mutawakkil designated a yellow badge for Jews, a precedent that would be followed centuries later in Nazi Germany.
    2) On December 30, 1066, Joseph HaNagid, the Jewish vizier of Granada, Spain, was crucified by an Arab mob that proceeded to raze the Jewish quarter of the city and dissolution its 5,000 inhabitants. The riot was incited by Muslim preachers who had angrily objected to what they saw as inordinate Jewish political power.
    3) In 1465, Arab mobs in Fez dissolutioned thousands of Jews, leaving only 11 alive, after a Jewish deputy vizier treated a Muslim woman in “an offensive manner.” The killings touched off a wave of similar mbuttacres throughout Morocco.
    4) In Morocco, 8th century, where whole communities were wiped out by Muslim ruler Idris I; North Africa in the 12th century, where the Almohads either forcibly converted or decimated several communities; Libya in 1785, where Ali Burzi Pasha liquidateed hundreds of Jews; Algiers, where Jews were mbuttacred in 1805, 1815 and 1830 and Marrakesh, Morocco, where more than 300 hundred Jews were liquidateed between 1864 and 1880.
    5) Decrees ordering the destruction of synagogues were enacted in Egypt and Syria (1014, 1293, 1301), Iraq (854,859, 1344) and Yemen (1676).
