ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ While Sri Lanka mourns the loss of one of her daughters at the hands of the brutal Saudi regime, Muslim extremists in Sri Lanka are working on exploiting the tragedy to gain converts to Islam. There has unfortunately been a general silence from Sri Lanka’s Muslim community, especially the Moors, over what many non-Muslim Sri Lankans have viewed with outrage. The execution of Rizana appears to mean little to very many Moor Muslims, as to decry the act would mean voicing one’s opinion against Sharia Law, the Islamic system of jurisprudence.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Several videos have appeared with Sri Lankan Muslim scholars justifying theƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ executionƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ of Rizana Nafeek and expounding the benefits of Sharia law. Moderate Sri Lankan Muslims who have voiced their opinion against the wanton murder of this poor girl have been subjected to vituperative attacks both online and in real life, along with having their belief in Islam questioned by fellow Muslims obsequious to the Saudi Arabian regime and the Wahhabi brand of Islam.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ The following article appeared on a Sri Lankan Muslim website, urging Muslims in the island to use the execution of Rizana Nafeek to gain converts to Islam.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

Salams,

The fate of Rizana has given a jolt to the world in general, and to Sri Lankan non-Muslims in particular. But something else is happening among Sri Lanka Sinhala Buddhists. They are curious and seeking answers to lots of questions that come up, about Islam. The search is on, to learn about Islam among Sri Lankan who are sincerely motivated to learn more. The book by bro. Ayoob was read by some. My copy of this book made its round among more than 20 educationists but they need to know more. There are plenty of educated Sri Lankans who will ask a thousand questions given the opportunity, but the proper atmosphere should be found. You must win their confidence in the first place. Already some people have expressed similarity with public execution in Saudi with what took place during the period of ancient kings in Sri Lanka. They expressed the sentiment that those who plans a crime can be discouraged by this. When it was pointed out that the very same reason is given in the Quran, they have no words to express.

Recently, a Moulavi took a 30 minutes train ride. During the journey, four different people at different places asked one simple question. What is Sharia? Who is in charge of Sharia? This Moulavi, although timid managed to give an explanation within the limited time but managed to reach a bigger audience in the vicinity of the questioner, because he can speak Sinhala Al Hamdhu Lillah.

Let us see the similarities here. After 9/11 the curiosity about Islam was very high and every copy of Quran Translation in USA was sold out. I was involved in going to the chat room of ABC and answering serious questions about Islam, of course with guidance from learned Sheikhs. I am sure a lot of people were doing this kind of D’awa and USA had more conversions.

After the Kuwait invasion, the US Army distributed copies of the Bible, but the conversion to Islam went full steam through every imaginable source. They were exposed to Islam for the first time and the result was over 3% of the total army including chaplains became Muslims.

I will not predict the same outcome, but can there be a slight, a very slight chance for a such an outcome if what is Islam is explained in the language the local community understand? Allah Provide opportunity for His Word to spread. Can this opportunity be used for such a noble purpose? Will those in the Da’awa work prepare a working plan to use this opportunity immediately, because when matters cool down, the interests are diverted. Even the extremists have taken low profile these days. If this can be done, the purpose of Rizana’s death will not be in waste.

Can the scholars think of a strategy to use this moment? Insha Allah I wish so.

After the 9/11 terror attacks, several Muslim groups resorted to the same tactics in order to gain converts. Exploiting the deaths of thousands of innocent people, these groups rodeƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ roughshodƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ over the feelings of victims’ families and in their eagerness to gain converts built a negative reputation for themselves. It appears as if lessons have not been learned, at least for a section of Sri Lankan Muslims who subscribe to a fundamentalist version of Islam that views all-non Muslims as “kuffar” and thus requiring the “enlightenment” of Islam. Exclusivist attitudes such as this are notƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ conduciveƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ towards inter-ethnic and inter-religious harmony not only in Sri Lanka, but around the world as well.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Calling themselves “Dawah groups”, these Sri Lankan Muslim fundamentalists use converts to their faith to gloat over and degrade other religions. In one video they have uploaded to youtube they show an ex-Buddhist monk who has converted to Islam. A Muslim man is seen goading him to condemn Buddhism and exhalt Islam. In another, they are seen gloating over a Catholic priest who has converted to Islam and is used as a proxy to condemn the Catholic faith and its followers. Hindu Tamils in Batticoloa are accused of “encroaching” on “Muslim land” when in reality they are displaced people coming back to their old homes that have been occupied. Anver Manatunga, a well known proponent of Islamic fundamentalism in Sri Lanka, uses online blogs to disparage non-Muslim religions and their faithful while promoting boycotts of companies that refuse to have the halal certification.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Despite these outrageousƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ acts, there has been little to no condemnation by the Sri Lankan Muslim community. Extremists are shielded and protected as “brothers of the Muslim Ummah” (worldwide Muslim community) despite the fact that they are actively spreadingƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ religious bigotry throughout the island. Islam is used and abused to promote rivalry, fundamentalism and extremism without any thought for the consequences. One can only hope that the extremists willƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ realizeƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the folly of their ways and work for the interests of all Sri Lankans without favour.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

    Lorenzo….

Looks like someone’s gone completely bananas!

When you follow a haywire doctrine, bang your head on the ground five times a day, it is bound to happen sooner or later………

  4. mjaya Says:

Lets look at the issue this way….

Say a North Korean who lives under the ideology that has made his fellow people grass eating skeletons tries to convince a South Korean (living in a free, open and prosperous society) to embrace the ideology of North Korea.

If the South Korean were to embrace the ideology and go to North Korea what would you do?
    a) Check to see if the South Korean received a humongous financial incentive
    b) Check to see if the South Korean was mentally ill
    c) Both

It’s disappointing to see the rise of Muslim extremism in Sri Lanka. I cannot help but wonder whether this is the result of Muslim scholars returning to the island from Saudi Arabia, that bastion of fundamentalism and militant Islam. From the above article it appears as if certain Muslim groups are turning into the Muslim variant of Christian evangelicals who are hell bent on converting all and sundry to their religion. What happened to the days of moderate Islam in Sri Lanka that co-existed without problems with the Buddhists, Hindus and Christians? There certainly has been a distinct change in the type of Islam practiced in the island.

  6. Lorenzo Says:

    Absolutely mjaya!

That is the beauty of these barbarians. They go mad (if they are already sane) very quickly. That is our strength!!

Islam fundamentalists are doing what LTTE did – BRAIN WASH the foolish.

There is only one solution and we all know what it is!!!!
