Islam is not the source of terrorism, but its solution

IntroductionDuring the last two decades in particular, the concept of “Islamic terror” has been often discussed. In the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks on targets in New York and Washington which caused the death of tens of thousands of innocent civilians, this concept has once again returned to the top of the international agenda.

As Muslims, we completely condemn these attacks and offer our condolences to the American people.

In this article, we will explain that Islam is by no means the source of this violence and that violence has no place in Islam.

We strongly condemn the cruel terrorist acts which targeted the innocent people of the United States.

One point that should be stressed at the outset is that the identities of the perpetrators of the acts of terrorism which targeted the United States are not yet determined. There is a chance that these horrible attackers are linked to quite different centres. It may well be a communist organization harboring rage and hatred against American values, a fascist organization opposing federal administration or a secret faction in another state. Even though the hijackers have Muslim identities, the questions regarding by whom and for what purposes these people were used will probably remain to be a mystery.

The fact remains however, that even if the terrorists have Muslim identities, the terror they perpetrated cannot be labelled “Islamic terror”, just as it would not be called “Jewish terror” if the perpetrators were Jews or “Christian terror” if they were Christians.

That is because, as we will examine in the following pages, murdering innocent people in the name of religion is unacceptable. We need to keep in mind that, among those who were killed in Washington or New York, there were people who loved Jesus (Christians), Prophet Moses (Jews) and Muslims. According to Islam, murdering innocent people is a great sin that, unless forgiven by God, brings torment in Hell.

Thus, a religious person who has fear of God can never commit such an act.

In fact, the aggressors can commit such violence only with the intention of attacking religion itself. It may well be that they carried out this violence to present religion as evil in the eyes of people, to divorce people from religion and to generate hatred and reaction against pious people. Consequently, every attack having a “religious” facade on American citizens or other innocent people is actually an attack made against religion.

All the three Theistic religions command love, mercy and peace. Terror, on the other hand, is the opposite of religion; it is cruel, merciless and it demands bloodshed and misery. This being the case, while looking for the perpetrators of a terrorist act, its origins should be sought in disbelief rather than in religion. People with a fascist, communist, racist or materialist outlook on life should be suspected as potential perpetrators. The name or the identity of the triggerman is not important. If he can kill innocent people without blinking an eye, whatever his label is, then he is a disbeliever, not a believer. He is a murderer with no fear of God, whose main ambition is to shed blood and to give harm.

For this reason, “Islamic terror” is quite a erroneous concept which contradicts Islam’s message. That is because, the religion of Islam can by no means concur with terror. On the contrary, Muslims are responsible for preventing terrorist acts and bringing peace and justice to the world.

The Values of the Qur’an demands Goodness, Justice and Peace

Terror, in its broadest sense, is violence committed against non-military targets for political purposes. To put it in another way, the targets of terror are entirely innocent civilians whose only crime is, in the eyes of terrorists, to represent “the other”.

This is an act bereft of any moral justification. This, as in the case of murders committed by Hitler or Stalin, is a crime committed against “mankind”.

The Qur’an is a Book revealed to people as a guide to the true path and in this Book, God commands man to adopt good morals. This morality is based upon concepts such as love, compassion, tolerance and mercy. God calls all people to Islamic morals through which compassion, mercy, peace and tolerance can be experienced all over the world:

You who believe! Enter absolutely into peace (Islam). Do not follow in the footsteps of Satan. He is an outright enemy to you. (Surat al-Baqara :208)

The values of the Qur’an hold a Muslim responsible for treating all people, whether Muslim or non-Muslim, kindly and justly, protecting the needy and the innocent and preventing the “dissemination of mischief”. Mischief comprises all forms of anarchy and terror that remove security, comfort and peace. As God says in a verse, “God does not love mischief makers”. (Surat al-Qasas: 77)

Murdering a person for no reason is one of the most obvious examples of mischief. God repeats in the Qur’an a command He formerly revealed to Jews in the Old Testament thus:

So We decreed for the tribe of Israel that if someone kills another person – unless it is in retaliation for someone else or for causing corruption in the earth – it is as if he had murdered all mankind. And if anyone gives life to another person, it is as if he had given life to all mankind. Our Messengers came to them with Clear Signs but even after that many of them committed outrages in the earth. (Surat al-Ma’ida: 32)

As the verse suggests, a person who kills even a single man, “unless it is in retaliation for someone else or for causing corruption in the earth“, commits a crime as if he had murdered all mankind on earth.

This being the case, it is obvious what great sins are the murders, massacres and, attacks, popularly known as “suicide attacks”, committed by terrorists are. God informs us how this cruel face of terrorism will be punished in the hereafter in the following verse:

There are only grounds against those who wrong people and act as tyrants in the earth without any right to do so. Such people will have a painful punishment. (Surat ash-Shura: 42)

All these reveal that organizing acts of terror against innocent people is utterly against Islam and it is unlikely that any Muslim could ever commit such crime. On the contrary, Muslims are responsible for stopping these people, removing “mischief on earth” and bringing peace and security to all people all over the world. Being a Muslim cannot be reconciled with terror. Just the contrary, it is the solution and prevention of terror.

This being the case, how did the popular term “Islamic terror” emerge?

What has been examined so far reveals that it is not possible to talk about an “Islamic” terror. Indeed, a closer look at the characteristics of the perpetrators explicitly reveals that this terror is not a religious but a social phenomenon.

Crusaders: Barbarians Who Trampled Their Own Religion

A helmet used by the Crusaders.

The true message of a religion or another system of belief can be at times exposed to distortion by its pseudo-adherents. The Crusaders, who constitute a dark episode of Christian history, set a good example of this.

Crusaders were European Christians who undertook the expeditions at the end of the 11th century to recover the Holy Land (the area around Palestine) from the Muslims. They set out with a so-called religious goal, yet they laid waste each acre of land they entered with fear and violence. They subjected civilians to mass executions and plundered many villages and towns.

Their conquest of Jerusalem, where Muslims, Jews and Christians lived under Islamic rule in peace, became the scene of immense bloodshed. They violently killed all Muslims and Jews. The Crusaders’ barbarism was so excessive that, during the Fourth Crusade, they plundered Istanbul, also a Christian city, and stole the golden objects from the churches.

Despite the fact that Christianity is a religion of love and pacifism, the Crusaders slaughtered innocent people in the name of Christ. They misunderstood their religion.

No doubt, all this barbarism was utterly against Christian political doctrine. That is because, Christianity, in the words of the Bible, is a “gospel of love”. In the Gospel according to Matthew, it is said that Jesus said “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” to his followers (Matthew, 5/44) In the Gospel according to Luke, it is said that Jesus said “If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also.” (Luke, 6/29) No doubt, in no part of the New Testament, is there reference to the legitimacy of violence; murdering innocent people, on the other hand, is unimaginable. You can find the concept of “massacre of the innocents” in the Bible; yet, only in the cruel Jewish King Herod’s attempt to kill Jesus while he was a baby.

While Christianity is a religion based on love that accommodates no violence, how did Christian Crusaders carry out the most violent acts of history? The major reason for this is that, Crusaders were mainly made up of ignorant people who could better be defined as “rabble”. These masses, who knew almost nothing about their religion, who had never read or even seen the Bible once in their lifetime, and who were therefore completely unaware of the moral values of the Bible, were led into barbarism under the conditioning of Crusaders’ slogans as “God wills it”.

It is worth mentioning that in that period, Eastern Christians – the people of Byzantium, for instance – who were culturally far ahead of Western Christians, espoused more humane values. Both before and after the Crusaders’ conquests, Orthodox Christians managed to live together with Muslims. According to Terry Johns, the BBC commentator, with the withdrawal of the Crusaders from Middle East, “civilized life started again and members of the three monotheistic faith returned to peaceful coexistence.” [1] The example of the Crusaders is indicative of a general phenomenon: The more the adherents of an ideology are uncivilized, intellectually underdeveloped and “ignorant”, the more likely they are to resort to violence. This also holds true for ideologies that have nothing to do with religion. All communist movements around the world are prone to violence. Yet the most savage and blood-thirsty of them was the Khmer Rouge of Cambodia. That is because they were the most ignorant.

Just as ignorant people may take a violence-ridden opinion to the point of insanity, so they may confuse violence with an opinion against violence (or to religion). The Islamic world also experienced such cases.

The Bedouin Character in the Qur’an

In the period of our Prophet, there existed two basic social structures in Arabia. City-dwellers and Bedouins (Desert Arabs). A sophisticated culture prevailed in Arab towns. Commercial relations linked the towns to the outer world, which contributed to the formation of “civilized life” among Arabs dwelling in cities. They had refined aesthetic values, enjoyed literature and, especially poetry. Desert Arabs, on the other hand, were the nomad tribes living in the desert who had a very crude culture. Utterly unaware of arts and literature, they developed an unrefined, harsh character.

Islam was born and developed among the inhabitants of Mecca, the most important city of the peninsula. However, as Islam spread to the peninsula, all tribes in Arabia embraced it. Among these tribes were also Desert Arabs, who were somehow problematic: their poor intellectual and cultural background prevented them from grasping the profundity and noble spirit of Islam. Of this God states the following in a verse:

The Desert Arabs are more obdurate in disbelief and hypocrisy and more likely not to know the limits which God has sent down to His Messenger. God is All-Knowing, All-Wise. (Surat at-Tawba: 97)

The Desert Arabs, that is, social groups who were “obdurate in disbelief and hypocrisy” and prone to disobey God’s commands, became a part of the Islamic world in the Prophet’s lifetime. In latter periods, they became a source of trouble for the Islamic world. The sect called “Kharijis” that emerged among Bedouins was an example. The most distinctive trait of this perverse sect (which was called “Kharijis” the rebels because they greatly deviated from Sunni practises), was their extremely vulgar, wild and fanatical nature. The “Kharijis”, who had no comprehension whatsoever of the essence of Islam or of the virtues and the values of the Qur’an, waged war against all other Muslims and based this war on a few Qur’anic verses about which they made distorted interpretations. Furthermore, they carried out “acts of terrorism”. Caliph Ali, who was one of the closest companions of the Prophet and was described by him as the “gate of the city of knowledge”, was assassinated by a Kharijite.

In latter periods, “Hashashis” (Assassins), another brutal organization, emerged; this was a “terrorist organization” made up of ignorant and fanatical militants bereft of a profound understanding of the essence of Islam and thus who could be readily influenced by simple slogans and promises.

In other words, just as the Crusaders distorted and misinterpreted Christianity as a teaching of brutality, some perverted groups emerging in the Islamic world misinterpreted Islam and resorted to brutality. What is common to these sects and the Crusaders was their “Bedouin” nature. That is, they were ignorant, unrefined, uncultivated, vulgar, and isolated people. The violence they resorted resulted from this social structure, rather than the religion to which they claimed to adhere.

The Actual Source of Terrorism: The Third World Fanaticism

These examples from history are enlightening for a better understanding of the phenomenon, the so-called “Islamic terror”, which is nowadays on the top of the international agenda. That is because those who emerge and carry out acts of terrorism in the name of Islam or those who back such acts -these people, no doubt, represent a minority in the world of Islam- stem from this “Bedouin character”, not from Islam. Failing to understand the essence of Islam, they try to make Islam, essentially a religion of peace and justice, a tool of barbarism, which is simply an outcome of their social and cultural structure. The origin of this barbarism, which may well be called the “Third World Fanaticism”, is the benighted initiatives of people who are devoid of love for humans.

It is a fact that, for the last few centuries, Muslims in all corners of the Islamic world, are being subjected to violence by Western forces and their affiliates. The colonialist European states, local oppressive regimes or colonialists backed by the West (Israel, for instance) caused great suffering for Muslims at large. However, for Muslims, this is a situation that has to be approached and responded to from a purely Qur’anic stance.

In no part of the Qur’an does God command believers to “respond to violence with violence”. On the contrary, God commands Muslims to “respond to evil with goodness”:

A good action and a bad action are not the same. Repel the bad with something better and, if there is enmity between you and someone else, he will be like a bosom friend. (Surat al-Fussilat: 34)

It is no doubt a legitimate right of Muslims to react against cruelty. However, these reactions should never turn into a blind hatred, an unjust enmity. God warns about this in the following verse: “… Do not let hatred for a people who debar you from the Masjid al-Haram incite you into going beyond the limits. Help each other to goodness and heedfulness. Do not help each other to wrongdoing and enmity. Heed God Allah (alone)…” (Surat al-Ma’ida: 2)

Consequently, carrying out terrorist acts under the pretence of “representing the oppressed nations of the world”, against the innocent people of other nations is by no means compatible with Islam.

Another point that deserves a special mention here is that all the Western world cannot be held responsible for the aforementioned colonialist (or “neo-colonialist) violence and oppression against Muslims. Actually, the materialist, irreligious philosophies and ideologies that prevailed in the 19th century are responsible for these dismal acts. European colonialism did not originate from Christianity. On the contrary, anti-religious movements opposing the values of Christianity led the way to colonialism. At the roots of the greatest brutalities of the 19th century lies the Social Darwinist ideology.

In the Western world today, there are still cruel, mischievous and opposing elements as well as a culture dominated by peaceful and just elements that have its roots in Judeo-Christian faith. As a matter of fact, the main disagreement is not between the West and Islam. Contrary to the general opinion, it is between the religious people of the West and of the Muslim world on the one hand, and the people opposing religion (like materialists and atheists.) on the other.

Another indication that Third World Fanaticism has nothing to do with Islam is that, until recently, this fanaticism has been identified with communist ideology. As is known, similar anti-Western acts of terror were carried out in 1960s and 70s by Soviet-backed communist organizations. As the impact of the communist ideology faded, some of the social structures which gave birth to communist organizations have turned their attention to Islam. This “brutality presented under the guise of religion”, which is formulated by the incorporation of some Islamic concepts and symbols into the former communist rhetoric are entirely against the moral values constituting the essence of Islam.

Anti-Western radicalism once used the communist ideology to support its violence. Now it is trying to use religious concepts.

A last remark about this issue is that Islam is not peculiar to a particular nation or geography. Contrary to the dominant Western perception, Islam is not an “Eastern culture”. Islam is the last religion revealed to mankind as a guide to the true path that recommends itself to all humanity. Muslims are responsible for communicating the true religion they believe in to all people of all nations and cultures and making them feel closer to Islam.

Consequently, there is a unique solution for people and groups who, in the name of Islam, resort to terror or establish oppressive regimes and turn this world into a dreadful place instead of beautifying it: revealing the true Islam and communicating it so that the masses can understand and live by it.

Conclusion: Recommendations to the Western World

Today, the Western world is concerned about the organizations that use terror under the guise of Islam and this concern is not misplaced. It is obvious that those carrying out terror and their supporters should be punished according to international judicial criteria. However, a more important point to consider is the long-term strategies that have to be pursued for viable solutions to these problems.

The assessments above reveal that terror has no place in Islam. They further show the inherently contradictory nature of the concept of “Islamic terror”. This provides us with an important vantage point:

1) The Western world, especially the United States, will surely take the most dissuasive measures to cope with terror and it has the right to do that. However, it has to state explicitly that this is not a war waged against Islam and Muslims but, on the contrary, a measure serving the best interests of Islam. The “Clash of civilizations”, the dangerous scenario envisioned in the 90’s should be at all costs prevented.

2) Support should be provided for the spread of “True Islam”, which is a religion of love, friendship, peace and brotherhood, and for its true understanding by Islamic societies. The solution for radical factions in Islamic countries should not be “forced secularization”. On the contrary, such a policy will incite more reaction from the masses and feed radicalism. The solution is the dissemination of true Islam and the appearance of a Muslim role-model who embraces Qur’anic values such as human rights, democracy, freedom, good morals, science and aesthetics, and who offers happiness and bliss to humanity.

3) The source of terrorism is ignorance and bigotry and the solution is education. To the circles who feel sympathy with terror, it should be said that terror is utterly against Islam, that terror only does harm to Islam, Muslims and to humanity at large. Besides, these people have to be provided with education in order to be purified of this barbarism. The United States’ support to such an education policy will yield very positive results.

Our hope is that these measures will help to the world get rid of terrorism and all other bigoted, brutal, barbarous structures. With its Christian-dominated culture and population, the United States, which defines itself as “a nation under God”, is in fact a real friend of the Muslims. In the Qur’an, God draws attention to this fact and informs us that Christians are those who are “most affectionate to those who believe. (Surat al-Ma’ida: 82)

In history, some ignorant people (for instance, Crusaders) failed to understand this fact and caused conflicts between these two great religions. To prevent the repetition of this scenario, true Christians and Muslims need to come together and co-operate.

    Sawmeer Khan,

The problem is that Muslims must abide by not just the Quran but the Hadith, equally.
Allah’s Messenger when asked which jihad was most excellent, Prophet Muhammad replied, “That of the one who strikes against the polytheists with his property and his person.” He was asked what manner of being killed was most honourable and Prophet Muhammad replied, “That of the one whose blood is shed and whose steed is wounded.”

There were so many battles against non-believers that your ‘holy’ Prophet Muhammad, Allah’s Messenger, led and bled, Murdering innocent non believers. But since Allah and Muhammad had sanctioned these war crimes, will all be forgiven? In the Battle of Badr, Prophet Muhammad injured his head, his front teeth impaired and his helmet crushed. Even young boys were in the battlefiled with him. Other battles he led were at Uhud and Hunayn.

Prophet Muhammad is the only Prophet that led an army and killed so what can you expect from his followers?

Sure there are words of love, mercy and peace in the Quran and Hadith but these are all overshadowed by the opposites!

    Dear Non-Muslim brothers,

Muslim fight for self defense and injustice in the time of prophet Muhammad pbuh. They never went and killed people like how Muslim crusaders doing in the all over the world. if you read the Islamic history when prophet Muhammad preach Islam in Mekka, The mekkan Kafir killed and torture their followers, even they kick out Muslim from their own place (Makka), so they went as refuge to Madina, Even in Madeena Muslim not give chance to live peacefully even they try to killed and torture his followers, After that only as last resource Allah gave permission to fight against injustice and harassment. Please open your eyes and see whole over the world, Muslim never killed million of people like Christian crusader killed in the world war.

Majority of the Islamic organization or movement which mention in your list are not took weapon they are Muslim political organization even they have parliament membership in their country. May be its terrorist organization as per USA and in your eyes. Even the terrorist organization which you mention they never went and killed people in other countries, they fighting against USA and Western occupier because these USA terrorist occupied our Muslim countries so we compel to fight against these injustice. They killed million of Iraqi, Afghan, Palestine innocent women and children.

    The Mother of all Terrorists

    To Be Taken Quite Literally!

For those of you who want “FACTS” and “FIGURES” and have the intellect to judge ‘GOOD’ from ‘EVIL’ and the courage to know and say out the TRUTH….for the rest you should stop here!

Ever since the United States Army massacred 300 Lakotas in 1890, American forces have intervened elsewhere around the globe 100 times. Indeed the United States has sent troops abroad or militarily struck other countries’ territory 216 times since independence from Britain. Since 1945 the United States has intervened in more than 20 countries throughout the world.

Since World War II, the United States actually dropped BOMBS ON 23 COUNTRIES. These include: China 1945-46, Korea 1950-53, China 1950-53, Guatemala 1954, Indonesia 1958, Cuba 1959-60, Guatemala 1960, Congo 1964, Peru 1965, Laos 1964-73, Vietnam 1961-73, Cambodia 1969-70, Guatemala 1967-69, Grenada 1983, Lebanon 1984, Libya 1986, El Salvador 1980s, Nicaragua 1980s, Panama 1989, Iraq 1991-1999, Sudan 1998, Afghanistan 1998, and Yugoslavia 1999.

Post World War II, the United States has also assisted in over 20 different coups throughout the world, and the CIA was responsible for half a dozen assassinations of political heads of state.

The following is a comprehensive summary of the imperialist strategy of the United States over the span of the past century:

Argentina-1890-Troops sent to Buenos Aires to protect business interests.

Chile-1891- Marines sent to Chile and clashed with nationalist rebels.

Haiti-1891-American troops suppress a revolt by Black workers on United States-claimed Navassa Island.

Hawaii-1893-Navy sent to Hawaii to overthrow the independent kingdom-Hawaii annexed by the United States.

Nicaragua-1894-Troops occupied Bluefields, a city on the Caribbean Sea, for a month.

China-1894-95-Navy, Army, and Marines landed during the Sino-Japanese War.

Korea-1894-96-Troops kept in Seoul during the war.

Panama-1895-Army, Navy, and Marines landed in the port city of Corinto.

Sewermeer types nonsense without answering the FACTS.

US kill so we kill is not an answer.

USA NEVER killed those people in the NAME OF ANY RELIGION.

Those Islam terrorists kill people IN THE NAME OF ISLAM. That is the difference.

  9. Ancient Sinhalaya Says:

Originator’s C.V. should give us some clues. The ‘pious man’ couldn’t read, couldn’t write. Was good in violence and another thing we all know. When Jews and Christian had a dispute, the two parties came to the Originator. The ‘pious man’ saw a very good chance to eliminate one group and ordered Christians to kill Jews. Jews never forgave them for that and became enemies to this day.
Should be proof enough why the followers are like this. ‘Gura hita gena hulijja karana kota, golayo duwa duwa hulijja karanawa kiyala kiyanne boruwatada’.

  10. herman Says:

    Sawmeer,

when will you and your fellow brothers come to the Right Understanding that INNOCENT NON-BELIEVERS and BELIEVERS were killed and are been killed in the name of Allah, Prophet Muhammad, the Quran and the Hadith.

There are so many verses in the Quran and Hadith to justify these killings, so blaming the americans and the Christian crusaders are your attempts to evade the Real problems – the Quran and the Hadith.

  11. Senevirath Says:

Their gods sit and watch and enjoy the seen. What sort of cruel gods. KUKULLU PORATA DAALA VINOdAWENA

    DUSHTAYODA DEVIYO KIYANNE

Why dont these gods fight with each other. Atleast now Gods should realise the damage they have done

WE are waiting to see the GOD” fight. NOT DOGS FIGHT?

  12. Kit Athul Says:

Lorenzo, thanks for the reply. It is not 95% it is 98%. Who is Sawmeer Khan? Mud Arab from Iraqi?

  13. Lorenzo Says:

    KA,

Yes it is 98% to be precise.

Khans are decedents of Genghis Khan. Genghis Khan’s empire did NOT reach SL. So this Khan MUST be an ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT from Pakistan or India.

Many Khans are involved in the terrorist group Harkat-ul-Mujahidin (HUM). They are now in Maradana, SL too. Maraadaanna is the solution.

  14. Nalliah Thayabharan Says:

Warlord Muḥammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh created Islam to grab power from the other religions in the Middle East at the time. Before turned to be a prophet for fun and profit, Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh – the merchant traveled quite widely and met Jews, Christians and Greeks, whose ideas emerged later in the inspiration he claimed to receive from Allah. Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh was charismatic and intelligent. Idiots don’t build empires, but they sometimes run empires, like Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus and George W Bush, but they never build empires. Founding an empire requires talent, intelligence, application, often charisma and ruthlessness. No halfwit or ignoramus has ever founded a civilization or started an empire.

It is not possible for a religion to arise which does evil and nothing more. Nobody would join it or bring their children up in it. Islam offered some improvements over the previous situation in pagan Arabia. The status of women improved, or so Muslims have claimed, they were no longer treated like field slaves to be whipped mercilessly, they rose in status to that of house slaves, to be patronized and whipped mercifully.

Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh also swept away much of the old order’s rigid structures of class, he had some tendencies which you could almost describe as egalitarian. Not democratic socialist of course, let’s not get carried away, but he did institute a taxation system which worked to alleviate absolute poverty. So, when you compare Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh to tyrants he stands alongside those tyrants who while conquering a lot of people, slaughtering his enemies, selling their children and raping their women did manage to do a few things to add to the positive side of the ledger. Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh was a warlord, pure and simple. Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh roused a disorganized group of nomadic tribes into a ruthless, fearless army. During his lifetime, Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh conquered the Arabia and his followers eventually extended those conquests from Spain to India. By all rights, Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh should take his place in history among of Alexander the Great, Genghis Kahn, and Tamerlane the Great as early history’s great military leaders. But when you compare him to great spiritual leaders like Confucius, Laozi or Gautama Buddha, well, Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh looks like a ruthless tyrant.

The claim that the status of women improved under Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh is disputed by many who say that the status of women went down under Islam. Women lost the right to own and control property. Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh’s first wife, Khadijah, who was a wealthy widow and trader in her own right employed Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh before marrying him. Perhaps 25 years of being the husband of one older wife who was wealthy and powerful in her own right contributed to Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh’s rather extreme treatment of women.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh was a camel-mounted pirate, a warlord, a slave trader and the murderer of defenseless prisoners. During his ten years in Medina, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh personally led 27 military attacks. Prior to his death, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh conquered most of the Arabian peninsula. According to the Quranic verses written in Medina verses, Allah accepts converts who do not believe in him inwardly, but will kneel to him outwardly under threat of death. Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh did not have this view of Allah until he became a warlord and used force to compel people to accept his rule. In Mecca, Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh had one wife. During his last 10 years of his life at Medina, Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh married 12 more women. A warlord does not tolerate those who question his decrees. Similarly, Muslims are warned by their teachers that asking too many questions about why Allah commands something is a sign of impiety. The corruption of Muslim officialdom in many countiries seems to follow the pattern set by Mohammed ibn ʿAbd Allāh when he was a corrupt warlord.

Muḥammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh did not invent monotheism. The Pharaoh Akhenaten in Egypt’s 18th dynasty had put a single sun deity at the centre of worship 2,000 years before Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh. Monotheism makes totalitarianism and intolerance much easier. Monotheism is responsible for more human suffering than any idea ever thought up by humans, with the possible exception of the idea that faith is a virtue, but we can’t blame Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh. Whatever his myriad faults are originality of thought is not one of them.

Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh did not initiate slavery. Slavery had been universal across Africa, Asia and Europe for several thousands of years. Slavery was considered to be totally normal. We can’t blame Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh for inventing slavery. But Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh thoroughly endorsed slavery and engaged in the trading, keeping and taking of slaves himself. Nobody wants to be enslaved and making, keeping and trading of slaves is totally abhorrent under any circumstances. Slavery is wrong period.

Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh did not invent the barbaric and primitive practice of marrying very young girls. Joseph was a 90 years old man at the time of marriage with the Mary – Mother of Jesus od Nazreth. Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh married Aisha at the age of 6, he watched over her until the age of 9 when he took her into his household as his wife, with all that this normally entails. Aisha was accused of being unfaithful to Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh. Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh declared that Aisha was innocent after a convenient divine revelation and decreed that from then on all accusations of adultery which includes rape require 4 reliable men as witnesses. Even today Muslim women are being thrown into prison or even stoned to death in places where sharia law is applied for the sin of being raped without enough 4 reliable men as witnesses.

The common claim that Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh was a pedophile is unfair. If this had been the case Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh could have had a lot more children in his tent. Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh’s first marriage was to an older widow Khadijah, which lasted 25 years during which time he had no other wife. Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh had something in the order of 16 wives and most of these were widows and older women. The statistics on the safety of childbirth among the under 14 give strong support to the idea that marriage at the first hint of puberty is an extremely bad example for any potential role-model to set. This bad example is blighting the lives of millions of girls and is directly responsible for many cases of miscarriage and horrific damage to young girls. Many women have a lifetime of incontinence and infertility because they followed the example of Islam’s “perfect man” Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh.

Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh did not invent the ritual sacrifice of animals. The Jews had done it for thousands of years. Animal sacrifice was also done by many other civilizations including the Greeks.
Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh did not introduce animal sacrifice to Arabia as his tribe and many others had been sacrificing to their Pagan gods for centuries and the younger Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh himself had both sacrificed to pagan gods and eaten the meat of that sacrifice.

Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh took for granted that his followers would be having sex with the wives of the pagan warriors that they captured in the battles and the wives of the Jewish tribes that they had killed. Qur’an says that a Muslim may marry up to 4 wives and have sex with the captives that his right hand possesses, which refers to slave women captured in battle.

Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh did not invent the strange barbarous practice of circumcision. Jews copied male circumcision from the Egyptians. Circumcision was carried out across large parts of Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Even today the butchery of the genitals of young girls is widespread across Africa, practiced by Muslims, practitioners of African traditional religions and Christians. Female Genital Mutilation is very common in Egypt and Ethiopia among Christians, and it is not right to blame this on Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh.

(CNN) — Outrage is mounting in Saudi Arabia about the case of a 5-year-old girl who died after allegedly being beaten and tortured by her father, who activists say is an Islamist preacher.

Lama Al-Ghamdi was admitted to King Saud Hospital in Riyadh last March after suffering extensive injuries, including broken ribs, a crushed skull, bruising and burns. Family, activists and officials say she died of her wounds in late October.

Lama’s mother and several high-profile activists in Saudi Arabia accuse the girl’s father, Farhan Al-Ghamdi, of committing those crimes. Saudi Arabia’s Human Rights Commission, a government-backed rights group, confirmed that Al-Ghamdi has been accused of torturing his daughter and that he is on trial for crimes leading to her death.

Attempts to reach Al-Ghamdi via activists, government officials and King Saud Hospital have been unsuccessful.
“My dear child is dead, and all I want now is justice so I can close my eyes and know she didn’t die in vain,” the mother, Syeda Mohammed Ali, told CNN. “She was brutally tortured in the most shocking ways.”

  23. Lorenzo Says:

    On the same story.

“Online activists in Saudi Arabia are calling for harsher punishments for child abuse after reports that a prominent cleric received only a light sentence after confessing to the beating death of his 5-year-old daughter.

The social media campaign gaining momentum Sunday is the latest attempt to use the Internet to pressure the kingdom’s ultraconservative rulers.

Saudi media reports say Fayhan al-Ghamdi, a frequent guest on Islamic TV programs, was arrested in November on charges of killing the girl. The reports said he questioned the child’s virginity.

Saudi media say he was freed last week after serving a short prison term and agreeing to pay $50,000 in “blood money” to avoid a possible death sentence.

The money was presumably offered to the girl’s mother or other relatives.”

  24. sawmeer Says:

STOP STEREOTYPING AND BREAKING STRONG RELATIONSHIPS AMONG THE COMMUNITIES

These days we are witnessing the spread of disturbing information and news which could cause disharmony and disunity among communities, especially between the Sinhala Buddhist and the Muslim Community. These ‘misinformation’ campaigns seem to be targeting the Sri Lankan Muslim community. In this brief writing I wish to clear certain misconceptions contained in these misinformation campaigns.

The reference of words “Islamic Extremism” or “Islamic Fundamentalism” appears all over the media including in the local media recently. Fundamentalism according to the Oxford dictionary means a strict adherence to the basic principles of any subject or discipline: free-market fundamentalism. Even the professionals who normally follow their professions fundamentally could be brought under these definitions. When the word fundamentalism is referred to strict religious adherence it is termed as ‘religious fundamentalism’. Although the term religious “fundamentalism” has its roots in the Niagara Bible Conference (1878–1897) which defined those things that are fundamental to Christian belief, it was used at first to describe some people in the Protestant community in the United States in the early 20th Centaury because they stood by a set of fundamental religious values.

In recent times both Cambridge and Oxford dictionaries also made reference to Islamic fundamentalism. If the religions preach righteous precepts like justice, brotherhood, unity and peace, then following any religion fundamentally will not harm anyone. It is the right (sometimes become duty) of any follower of any religion to follow his or her religion fundamentally. However, following a religion fundamentally should not cause any harm to anyone or to the followers of other religions. The word ‘fundamentalism” is not a word to cause anxiety and fear as long as the person who follows the religion fundamentally is an innocent and sincere follower of his religion without causing any form of harm or injustice to others.

Those who attempt to equate Islam and Muslims with violence are attempting to show that word ‘Jihad’is harmful and a threat to others. They conveniently borrow their contention from the Western media who are engaged in overt and covert operation of misgiving and misleading campaign to tarnish the good name of Islam to sustain their own political and economic goals.

    No war against Brothers
The word ‘Jihad’ derived from Arabic Jahadun means ‘struggle’. It does not indicate to give a meaning of fighting or holy war. The concept of holy war is alien to Islam and nowhere in the Quran or Hadees is the concept found. The Prophet (PBUH) said “your first ‘jihad’ is a struggle against your desire and evil thoughts.” This struggle could be against injustice and struggling against injustice is an accepted norm by mankind and even by the international conventions. Islam does permit killing, injuring or hurting anyone unjustly and further it does not provide justification to any aggression which is committed or intended to be committed in the name of any labels or isms. Some misguided elements attempt to portray Sri Lankan Muslims as violent and concoct a false and manipulated story to show that they will fight against other communities especially against the majority Sinhalese. This is utter nonsense and a fabrication to mislead people.

For Muslims, Sinhalese and Tamils are brothers and sisters and what is the reason or purpose on earth for Muslims to fight against their brothers and sisters? In fact, Sinhala Buddhists, Sinhala, Tamil and Burgher Christiains, Tamil Hindus and Muslims are the children of this soil. Why should one desire that they should fight each other? No one should be allowed to destroy the centuries old close relationship between Sinhala and Muslim Communities. There is no reason whatsoever for these communities to strain their good relations. It maybe some forces are attempting to create divisions by relying on poisonous propaganda against Muslims in the media and websites which were especially created by divisive global forces who are bent on creating divisions and destructions in other states. The history and record is very clear, Sri Lankan Muslims have never engaged in rebellion against the state in the Sri Lankan history

Religious extremism and Non Compulsion in Religion
Religious extremism is not what Islam preaches though Islam pursues Muslims to be extremely good and to love others and to be extremely just and fair. In the question of practicing religion extremely, Islam is very clear and stresses moderation in worship and practice. Al-Quran Says: “We will ease you to the Easy Way”(AlQuran 87:8). Ibn Kathir says in his commentary on this verse.” We shall make easy for you the easy way ) meaning, ‘We will make good deeds and statements easy for you, and we will legislate such Law for you that is easy, tolerant, straight and just, with no crookedness, difficulty or hardship in it (Tafsir Ibh Kathir)
The Prophet said: “This Religion is easy, and no one overburdens himself in his religion but he will be unable to continue in that way. So do not be extremists, but try to be near perfection and receive the good tidings that you will be rewarded. Gain strength by worshipping in the mornings and afternoons and during the last hours of the night.”(Abu Huraira(Ral))

The Quran says ‘There is no compulsion in religion. Verily, the right path has become distinct from the wrong path’ (The Quran Chapter 2: 256 ) meaning “Do not force anyone to become Muslim, for Islam is plain and clear, and its proofs and evidence are plain and clear.

    Brotherhood and Solidarity
If we are united by respecting each others’ religion and culture, no external forces can interfere in our internal affairs. We can show to the world our brotherhood and solidarity. If we cannot appreciate others religious practice and cultures at least we need to tolerate it. Only through mutual understanding and tolerance the communities can peacefully coexist. In a multi-racial and religious society like ours every community may have problems and grievances but these should be resolved in a very civilised and democratic way.

If we start stereotyping communities by picking up from the biased international media, blogs and internet sites which in most cases are fabricated, manipulated or half baked truth, it will turn into unending misunderstandings and mistrust among communities and also will contribute to intensify the campaign of vilification and hate against each other. If we start accepting all the hearsay and slanders as conclusive facts, it will not only bring disharmony among us but it will also degrade our intelligence to a low level.

There are references of Wahabism, Salafism and Sufism in the several articles that appeared in the newspapers these days. Nowhere in the Quran and the Prophet’s tradition are these ‘isms’ mentioned. These ‘isms’ were firstly referred by the western writers and media to describe different groups, political affiliations and these ‘isms’ do not have any religious significance. Every child knows that the imperialistic powers created instability and a volatile environment in the Middle East for their political, economic and military ends. For this purpose they also create divisions among the people on several grounds. Only eminent Islamic scholars and experts could give the right interpretation to Islamic preaching.

Muslims do not follow any ‘ism’. According to their faith, they have to follow the Quran and the Prophet’s tradition for their salvation. Despite all the anti propagandas the message of the Quran and Prophet’s tradition indisputably stands clearly with the message of peace and universal brotherhood. In conclusion I wish to quote from Lord Buddha’s saying “Hatred will not cease by Hatred but with Love”

  25. Lorenzo Says:

Here Sewermeer says stop breaking relations between communities, in another post he blames Sinhalese and Buddhists!

Typical hat turning tactics as the Tamil proverb says!

  26. Nanda Says:

    Swami Khan,

“Hatred will not cease by Hatred but with Love” .
Can you tell me a similar one from your Allah or Mohomud ?
This mohamud bugger (pbhu) has given so many times idiotic words “kill” . Is this kill means “killing of bad thoughts” ?
Is that what you are saying ?

  27. induma Says:

  29. Ancient Sinhalaya Says:

….meer or meeya? by the way. Breaking relations between communities. Who is breaking them? Bulldoz Muhudu Maha Viharaya to accommodate multiplying numbers. Deegawapi ruined by Ashroff lebbe. East was islamised by the vermin. Mushrooming mosques all over the country with an alarming rate. Now starting another eyesore next to our sacred Sri Maha Bodhiya. Kuragala ruined by alewi maulana lebbe. ( )riya neethiya slowly being introduced by hakeem lebbe. Halal menace slowly being introduced all over the country. Then there are various lebbes in every town: mayor, deputy mayor etc. etc posts slowly islamisation town after town in our country with ever multiplying numbers. We can not believe this guy has the audacity to try to cleanse this diabolical behaviour of their lot. They are very lucky they are in Sri Lanka. They are only waiting for the numbers to be high enough to put our necks to the sword of islam (Tamils included in this. Some of them are of the opinion that they will be treated differently by the muslims because of the common language they speak. But the quran, the text book of terror, says kill all the non-believers.) History shows what they done to the countries they went to: Egypt, Afganisthan, Pakisthan, Maldives, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indoenesia etc. No native was spared. Convert or be killed.

  30. herman Says:

    sawmeer ,

You had not directly answered any of the questions posed to you, but will you just answer where in the quran can we find Muhammad expressing “your first jihad is a struggle against your desire and evil thoughts.” ? Is this Allah’s words or sawmeers?

  31. sawmeer Says:

Dear Herman, Its not from Quran its the teaching of prophet Muhammam pbuh, we call hadith. (your first jihad is a struggle against your desire and evil thoughts)

To begin with, we must quote verses within their context. If we quote one verse without quoting what comes before it or sometimes after it or both, then the meaning is lost and anyone may interpret that verse according to their desire.

So taking the first incomplete verse that you quoted and listing verses 190 to 192, exactly one verse before and one verse after clarifies the meaning greatly:

{Fight in the way of Allah against those who fight against you but do not transgress, for Allah does not like transgressors} (2:190)

{Kill them whenever you confront them and drive them out from where they drove you out. (For though killing is sinful) wrongful persecution is even worth than killing. Don’t fight against them near the holy mosque unless they fight against you; but if they fight against you kill them, that’s the reward of such unbelievers.} (2:191)

{Then if they stop, know well that Allah is Ever-Forgiving, Most Compassionate.) (2:192)

So looking at the above verses, they are obviously talking about the disbelievers of Quraish at the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him); therefore, the mention of the holy mosque in Makkah.

However, if we generalize, we still conclude that Allah orders the Muslims to fight as self-defense and to stop fighting when the enemy stops as you may read in verses 190 and 192 above.

Again the second verse you have quoted is incomplete. With half the information missing, you are not going to understand the proper meaning; again here we need to quote the verse before and the verse after:

{What has happened to you that you two minds about the hypocrites even though Allah has reverted them owing to the sins that they earned? Do you want to lead those to the Right Way whom Allah let go astray? And he whom Allah lets go astray, for him you can never find a way.} (4:88)

{They wish that you should disbelieve just as they disbelieved so that you may all be alike. Don’t, therefore, take allies from them until they emigrate in the Way of Allah; but if they turn their backs (on emigration), seize them and slay them wherever you come upon them. take none of them for your ally or helper, unless it be such of them who seek refuge with the people who are joined with you by a covenant, or those who come to you because their hearts shrink from fighting either against you or against their own people. Had Allah so willed, He would certainly have given them power over you and they would have fought against you. If they leave you alone and don’t fight against you and offer you peace, then Allah does not permit you to harm them.} (4:89-90)

These verses are clearly talking about the hypocrites who were plotting against Muslims at the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon them) and the sign that they are hypocrites is that they did not migrate with the rest of the Muslims, so the Prophet was asked to kill them unless they stop harming the Muslims; if they do so then leave them alone.

As for the third verse, the translation is incorrect; here’s the correct translation:

{It is not befitting for a Prophet to take captives until he has sufficiently suppressed the enemies in the land. You merely seek the gains of the world whereas Allah desires (for you the good) of the Hereafter. Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.} (8:67)

This verse was revealed with regard to the battle of Badr which was the first war that the Muslims encountered. Since Muslims were not financially established, they wanted to capture as many prisoners of war as possible in order to ask for ransom. This displeased Allah, therefore, the blame: “You merely seek the gains of the world…”. The verses below give more details about captives of war in Islam.

As for the fourth verse, the same applies as in the first and second verses you mention, that verses before and after must be quoted as well:

{This is public proclamation by Allah and His Messenger to all people on the day of the Great Pilgrimage: “Allah is free from all obligation to those who associate others with Allah in His Divinity; and so is His Messenger. If you repent, it shall be for your own good; but if you turn away, then know well that you will not be able to frustrate Allah. So give glad tidings of a painful chastisement to those who disbelieve. In exception to those who associate others with Allah in His Divinity are those with whom you have made treaties and have not violated their treaties nor have backed up anyone against you. Fulfill your treaties with them till the end of their term. Surely Allah loves the pious.”} (9:3-4)

{But when the sacred months expire, slay those who associate others with Allah in His Divinity wherever you find them; seize them, and besiege them, and lie in wait for them. But if they repent and establish the Prayer and pay Zakah, leave them alone. Surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Ever-Merciful.} (9:5)

{And if any of those who associate others with Allah in His Divinity seeks asylum, grant him asylum that he may hear the Word of Allah, and then escort him to safety for they are a people who don’t know.} (9:6)

From the above verses, it is clearly talking about those who have declared war against the Muslims since repentance is mentioned and the last verse is allowing the Muslims to grant asylum to those who are not wanting to fight.

As for the last one, it is incorrectly translated as well; here’s the correct translation:

{When you meet the unbelievers (in battle), smite their necks until you have crushed them, then bind your captives firmly; therefore (you are entitled to) set them free, either by an act of grace, or against ransom, until the war ends…} (47:4)

This is talking about facing the enemy in battle since it talks about captives. It does not say to torture captives as in the case of modern warefare; Islam set the rules more than forteen hundred years ago that it was, and still is free from such barbaric acts. Captives are either freed as an act of grace or against ransom such as getting the Muslim captives from the enemy’s side.

Some might question, why would a religious book talk about war. The simple answer is that Islam is a complete way of life with political, economical, and social systems which are well defined.

There is no religion or nation who is more tolerant that Islam. Yes, some Muslims could be intolerant but Islam should not be blamed for their evil acts. It is only their misunderstandings about their own religion that led them that far.

Islam promotes moderation in all aspects of life, when someone takes it lightly or makes it stricter than it should be, then there will be negative consequences.

I hope this helps answer your question.

  32. herman Says:

    My Dear sawmeer,

Finally, you had conceded that the verse in question is not found in the quran but in the hadith. So, you had misled us – “The prophet said “your first ‘jihad’ _ _ _”. Only the sayings of the prophet is in the quran. The hadith contains various CONFLICTING meanings and interpretations written by very confused people and the chief causes and problems that so many muslims including scholars have to deal with!

Your explanations and clarifications only strengthens and confirms what we all had tried to impress upon you that allah and Muhammad had provided avenues for muslims to take up arms and kill in the name of islam with the pretext of ‘defence’ .

And yet, with Total arrogance you claim that “there is no religion or nation who is more tolerant that Islam_ _ _ “.

The Basque in Spain fighting for 2,000 years the Spanish and others.

Since the Basque language is unrelated to Indo-European, it is often thought that they represent the people or culture who occupied Europe before the spread of Indo-European languages there.

Since its articulation by Sabino Arana in the late 19th century, the more radical currents of Basque nationalism have demanded the right of self-determination and even independence. W

It is thought that Basques are a remnant of the early inhabitants of Western Europe, specifically those of the Franco-Cantabrian region. Basque tribes were already mentioned in Roman times by Strabo and Pliny, including the Vascones, the Aquitani, and others. There is enough evidence to support that at that time and later they spoke old varieties of the Basque language (see: Aquitanian language).

Nowadays, according to one single opinion poll, only slightly more than 50% of Basques profess some kind of belief in God, while the rest are either agnostic or atheist. The number of religious skeptics increases noticeably for the younger generations, while the older ones are more religious.[26]
