UNHRC: Who is reversing the sacrifices of Sri Lanka’s soldiers?

Shenali Waduge

A country that remains the ONLY country that has annihilated the scrooge of terrorism should be feeling proud of the achievement and not have to send emissaries to go begging for support against Resolutions. What kind of victory is this to be made to feel sorry for eliminating terrorists? Who is advocating such a policy when it is we who should be taking our success story and proudly revealing to the world how we eliminated a terrorist movement that ruined our country for 3 decades especially when the nations rallying round Resolutions against Sri Lanka are incapable of eliminating terrorism or perhaps do not really want to solve it!

The tragi-comedy of this exercise unfortunately has been tasked to the very man who was the architect of what we all know to be the greatest betrayal of the country. How can anyone trust a man whose very role was to speak about the merits of a Cease Fire Agreement with the LTTE speaking in glorying terms of Sri LankaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s commitment to uphold every clause of the 2002 CFA whilst LTTE was committing violations by the thousands? Can a nation trust a man using the same verbatim of praise for the CFA now a decade later be promoting the reverse and glorifying our true heroes ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” the soldiers? In what manner of passion is this delivery being accepted by the counterparts is also questionable.

No country should have to be towing the line of appeasement for ending terrorism. Did the Allied Forces adopt such a strategy when the Germans were defeated? Was there Reconciliation and other such terminology used and plane loads of foreign visitors coming to see how progress in Germany was and how the German citizens were being looked after?

In all of the foreign interventions and invasions that the West has taken part in with and without UN approval ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” how many timelines, deadlines, UN visits, UN Special Rapporteurs or even Resolutions have been placed even at ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-watered-downƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ levels? Where were the UN teams, the foreign diplomats, the Opposition Party delegations, the Parliamentary delegations visiting the countries that the US and NATO invaded, bombed or completely destroyed because it suited their national security plan?

Is the world aware that Sri Lanka has been hosting virtually every month some sort of delegation be it foreign embassy officials, foreign parliaments, opposition parliaments, NGOs, INGOs, UN and showing them every inch of the areas that the conflicts took place, the development being done, the resettlement, introducing them to former LTTE combatant now reintegrated to society and despite all this transparency there is now a vote taking place because the ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-paceƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ is not enough.

So what do these Resolution-makers really want?

They want the LLRC implemented. What is the LLRC it is the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission and probably a trap which the Government has fallen for thanks to the lovely advisors it keeps.

Anyhow, the fact remains the LLRC is ONLY A LIST OF RECOMMENDATIONS. There is No Government or for that matter any private body that is COMPELLED to follow every single RECOMMENDATION made. Recommendations are only a list of suggestions made by the people that have been appointed. These appointees are not appointed by the people and therefore their recommendations DO NOT HAVE to be taken in toto.

In other words, neither the US nor the UN or any country for that matter can dangle the LLRC before the Government of Sri Lanka and threaten to bring Resolutions if LLRC is not implemented in full. In most likelihood the advisors of the Government are likely to make or probably are making all types of deals that would reverse and erase all that our soldiers have sacrificed for when the Ministry in charge of taking care of the interest of the nation should be simply saying that LLRC is only a set of recommendations and the Government will only take and apply those suggestions that it feels does not violate the Constitution and the Rights of the people of Sri Lanka. Recommendations are not to be implemented to satisfy foreign nations or international bodies. Now why is this message is not being clearly conveyed all this time since 2009?

No sooner the war ended and the country realized that nations whose dictates Sri Lanka did not follow which includes India would come down harsh on Sri Lanka the advisors should have set the ball rolling to ensure our policies were clearly articulated to the world at the external level and internally the policies were drawn up so that all areas that would lead to a future conflict was taken care of.

The best option internally would have been to make a special statement on the 6th amendment and remind all citizens inclusive of parliamentarians that the Government would uphold every line of the clauses in the Act. Moreover, the Government should have taken an oath of allegiance to the state so that no citizen of Sri Lanka would work towards separating the nation and this would have sent a very strong message to all those attempting to destabilize it.

The sacrifices the soldiers made are no small sacrifices. What they gave their lives for cannot be sacrificed at the negotiating table reversing the freedom that we gained after 30 years. With the LTTE we faced Terror, we are not ready to be sacrificed diplomatically and the politicians striking these traitorous deals would well do to remember that.

The President must now rise to the need of the hour.

  1. Lorenzo Says:

    Just asking.

Is there anyway we can use 6 amendment to disable 13 amendment?

If 13 amendment VIOLATES 6 amendment, then we have a situation!!

  2. Sunil Vijayapala Says:

Lorenzo it’s pointless arguing on technicality and logic the govts in power in sl have a firm grip on the judiciary, the root cause of the problem is the flawed constitution itself which should be discarded, its time we begin to set out a plan to discard both major parties and begin a peoples movement eventuating in capturing power, get the right international support, and teach tigers and wahaabis a lesson or two, canvass the military and hit peoples enemies hard, that is the very major parties iam talking about, which are corrupt to the hilt, every person i talk to says they are struggling with day to day living both poor and middle class in fact most dread mr now, probably a hela movement, an awakening and capturing power is the only alternative left for incorrupt sinha+hela, tamils, muslims and other minorities, wasting time, money and energy on fruitless constitutional matters is of no use, we need to have a dialogue now on a plan to capture power with whatever resources we have

  3. Nanda Says:

    Sunil Ayya,

Minister Champaka Ranawaka has offcially lauched ” Fight Against Halal “.
President Bush launched the same after 9/11.

    Howabout joining Champaka ?

  4. Sri Rohana Says:

Though born in South Africa but a creature of a British slave trade, tamil tribal Navinathan Pillai is the architecture to UNHR resolutions against Sri Lanka. Her worry is her tribal tamil terrorist “sun god” “suryathevan” velupillai prabakaran died like a pig in May 18th 2009 when fight with Sri Lankan Army. This is the most disappointed day for tamil terrorists and their terror supporters of all over the world including Navinathan Pillai of UNHR. Tamil mythical eelam balloon was burst in to pieces on that day. Sorry scenario for velu pillai and navi pillai.
Since then Navi pillai has a grudge and tried to revenge from Sri Lanka. Since 2009 every year her agenda is either hook or crook to misuse her authority against Sri Lanka an independent member of UNHR. It is non-stop 2009/2010/2011/2012 UNHR resolutions and next is coming in 2013. I don’t think for entire UNHR history any country embarrassed that much from resolutions by UNHR. If Navi Pillai has iota of shame why there aren’t any resolution against U.S.A, U.K and NATO nations for Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya massacres and invasions? Navi Pillai, are you normal or abnormal? Or are you deaf and dumb?
Navinathan Pillai advises Sri Lanka government to withdraw military camps from our own country. But since 1945 after defeated Germany, Italy and Japan yet American military camps are in Germany and all over the Europe. In Japan Okinawa is an infamous American military base. Korean War is over but yet there are many American camps in Korea. There aren’t wars in Cuba but American base in Guantanamo yet. If Iraq war is over why the hell Americans have a base in Qatar? On what basis Navi Pillai advises one member country a theory which is not applies to powerful countries.
Can she ask India to withdraw military bases from Kashmir or Sikkim or Nagaland or Naxalite control areas or Amritsar? Is it because she is tamil tribal Indian descendent? A different law for U.S and India but a different law applies to Sri Lanka. In which university she learnt law? With Navipillai’s tamil tribal law she brought down the UNHR position to history’s low?
Navinathan Pillai is a shame to UNHR. She spoiled the UNHR high commissioner post on bias tribalism.

  5. Ratanapala Says:

It is increasingly becoming apparent that MR’s efforts are to save his neck from false allegations and not saving Sri Lanka and her people from another wave of Tamil Tiger Racist Separatist terrorism. If he is genuinely interested then he should not go into creating blunder after blunder. He should have been careful in selecting the LLRC panel, instead he appointed a set of Colombians who have not passed the Kamata test, nor have any interest or love for the well being of the majority Sinhalese in the first – who suffered the most during the 30 year Tamil Tiger Separatist Terrorist war.

We are yet to see any improvement for the Upcountry Sinhalese who lost land to the Britishers.

We are yet to see any re-settlement of the Sinhalese who were chased out of the Northern Province.

We are yet to see any improvement to the long struggling heroic Sinhalese who defended the unity and territorial integrity of the land 24/7.

We are yet to see the up-liftment in the life of the millions of people living in difficult to access hinterland of Sri Lanka.

All what is happening in the country is targeted towards appeasing the minorities whose thirst for more never ends. Sinhala aspirations have been put on the back burner ever since we got Independence and minorities started making unacceptable demands. None of the demands would have been acceptable in any self respecting country.

Many patriots who supported the President in his heoric deed of vanquishing the LTTE are now increasingly becoming sceptical as to this true intentions. His last fall back option, strength and bedrock of support is from the SInhala Buddhists. He will disregard them at this own peril as did most of the so called Sinhala leaders since Independence.

Shenali is dead right in all what she says.

  6. Vijendra Says:

There is a saying that “one stitch in time, saves nine”. The biggest blunder this government did is not to capitalize on the liberation of the country from the ruthless terrorist organization called the ltte. MR should have taken steps immediately to consolidate the victory by taking the steps required to stop any Sri Lankan from polarizing the country. Anyone not towing the line should have been made “persona nongrata”. It’s a shame that even up to now, no action has been taken in this regard.

On the heels of the victory, MR should have also amended the constitution to ensure that the over-politicization of the country imposed by India is undone. They still dilly-dally on the abolition of the 13A! However, there was no delay to make legal powers for the president to contest beyond the two terms permissible before! Though I respect MR for winning the war against the ltte, local traitors and the foreign war mongers, now, like many Sri Lankans, I believe that MR is no better than the power crazy RW. People are losing confidence in him by the day and his days appear to be numbered. I hope someone of the caliber of GR will take on the reigns soon to give us the hope and the confidence that SL will remain a united country belonging to all Sri Lankans who think and act as true Sri Lankans.

I take my hat off to Shenali and all those above mentioned comments. I have been dying to express my view mentioned above. It is the Sinhala buddhists fall into number three after Tamils and Muslims. This pathetic situattions has been created by all incumbent governments by giving the priority to Tamil and buddhist communities whereas all incumbent governments were installed by the majority sinhalese. Time is right now to choose and elect a patriotic political party who should be able to look into the grievances of the majority and not the two major two political parties or the JVP. There shall be no alliance with the crossover champions who are considered as the scum of the earth. But the only hurdle is the CIA and RAW infiltration.

  8. stanley perera Says:

Please let me correct: Tamil and Muslim communities and not Tamil and Buddhist communities.

  9. Dilrook Says:

    Ratanapala put it correctly.

The Rajapakse clan is pawning the country to save themselves.

This is what happens in Sri Lanka today. Sinhala support is taken for granted. The government is in a mad frenzy to satisfy Tamils in whatever way they can. I’m afraid that is not going to happen due to regular Tamil Nadu indoctrination through music, films, news and other media.

Appeasement of Tamils is like the proverbial “gangata ini kapanawa”.

Exposing the clan to war crimes following a defeat or the threat of election defeat will force them to seek shelter among the only people they can trust, the Sinhalese. Until then appeasing Tamils and selling off the nation will continue.

  10. jayasiri Says:

Thanks Shenali!…….After some absence I have come back, and glad to see your continued support to our course. Glad to see your analysis and comment which I am sure many will admire.

There are very few activists, intelectuals, who fight for our people, where as every year some western country immigrnts continue to distort news to give Sri Lanka a bad name.

Thanks again, hoping to hear from you again………~ Jayasiri
