Rift among lawyers after induction of new BASL President

CJ Mohan Pieris had not been invited forƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the convocation held on Saturday at Navarangahala to induct the new BASL president. Instead, the UNP dominated BASL, had asked a ‘pretender’ to grace the occassion. Impeached CJ Shiranie Bandaranayke with bankrupt politicians had sat at the High Table. As expected a great majority of the PC’s and senior lawyers had not participated. The Attorney General, senior Judges and seniors from the Attorney General’s Dept had boycotted the ‘get together’. So it had turned out to be an an anti-govt, pro-Eelam, bankrupt politicians ‘evening party’.

After this meeting, the role of the BASL had been exposed by the Lawyers Association forƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ Human Rights and Democracy (LAHRD) by indicating that the former is pursuing a political agenda. They have said that the outgoing President is a UNP., MP and the incoming is an active member of the opposition. They have been highly critical of the BASL for promoting an impeached CJ as the 43rd Chief Justice of Sri Lanka. They have also reminded that she has 13 corruption charges against her and had been summoned before the Bribery Commission. While condemning speeches made by pro-Eelamists they have queried the invitations extended to bankrupt politicians.

After the BASL meeting there is a clear indication of a rift among lawyers. And it is heartening to note that there is a dialogue to form an alternative Bar Association in the interest of the nation.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚

Let me attach a statement from a ono-UNP lawyer.
“Wijedasa Rajapakshe PC, Member of Parliament of the United National Party and a member of the Working Committee brought politics into the BASL and ruined the BASL and further he couldn’t stand for his second term. Now Upul Jayasuriya, another politician who lost all his national elections with Lalith Athulathmudali, has been returned as President of the BASL and on his Convocation he commenced the destruction of the integrity of the Bar Association by inviting the impeached Chief Justice as the Chief Guest. Further, he used former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, and former UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya who have nothing to do with the Bar Association. And he used the BASL further for his own political agenda. Why’ was the Membership so irresponsible as to elect a person with known political agendas? Where are we headed now?”
The best is to good lawyers get together and form a proper BA.

unfortunately, there are very few good lawyers in practise. Lawyers are lawyers. So, forming another or alternative Bar association is not the solution.

When Jihad lawyers come out in 2016 (2012 + 4 years) and join the BAR, it will be real fun.

Upul Jayasuriya is a top traitor. He was in my class and got four F’s in A Levels.
His brother worked for Kit Athu’s cousin closely in 1977 elections.
Soon after he passed the law college exams, he was given the post as Tractor Corporation Chaiman.
