Permanent Delegation of Sri Lanka to UNESCO Paris

The newly appointed Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Sri Lanka to UNESCO, Professor Karunaratne Hangawatte presented Credentials to Madam Irina Bokova, Director General of UNESCO at its headquarters in Paris today (05th June 2013).

An Attorney ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…”at-law by profession, Ambassador Hangawatte read for his PhD at the School of Criminal Justice, The University at Albany, New York, with honours, and was, prior to his appointment as Ambassador of Sri Lanka to France and Ambassador/ Permanent Delegate of Sri Lanka to UNESCO, a Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice, at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, USA.

A Member of the Presidential Commission on ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Lessons Learnt and ReconciliationƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ in Sri Lanka, (LLRC), Ambassador Hangawatte also served as a Member of the Committee of Eminent Persons (Experts) that drafted the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Victims of Crime and Abuse of Power and was Rapporteur of the Preliminary Committee of Experts on the Victims of crime and Abuse of Power.

Ambassador Hangawatte served as Assistant Secretary of Justice at the Ministry of Justice of Sri Lanka from 1976 to 1981.
