Deporting the Australian Senator and the New Zealand MP is the correct move

‚ The Sri Lankan Immigration authorities asking Australian Senator Lee Rhiannon and the New Zealand MP Jan Logie, as reported in the media on 10 November, to pack their bags and get out of Sri Lanka is the correct response to their engaging in activities not permitted under the conditions on which they were granted visas. While the two deportees state that they had received tourist visas in the -ËœSpecial Project-â„¢ category issued by the Sri Lankan consulate in Australia, they seem to ignore the fact that the Sri Lankan consulate in Australia is a representing body of the Ministry of External Affairs based in Colombo and that the latter has every right to override the decisions made by its embassies or consulates abroad.

‚ Anyone who has ever obtained a tourist visa to visit another country knows clearly that the visa allows the visitor to visit places of tourist interest: it is illegal for him or her to get engaged in any activity that falls outside those of ‚ -tourist interest-, such as getting employed, being involved in any trade, participating in political activities, etc.

‚ The two Australian and New Zealand nationals concerned must be thinking that all Sri Lankans, as well as those in the latter group, who have had the opportunity to travel abroad, except the Tamil separatists who support them, are babes in arms. The two -Ëœtourists-â„¢ are reported to have met representatives of the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi, TELO, PLOTE and EPRLF, and that their talks centered on the government taking over land, disappearances, those in detention for long periods, war time atrocities, etc., according to a report in Island on 10 November. Even a primary schoolchild knows that these matters do not fall within the ambit of those of tourist interest.

‚ The most hilarious aspect of the whole story is that the two individuals concerned who had travelled to the North of Sri Lanka were planning to use the TNA Office in Bambalapitiya to conduct their illegal news briefing to the media.

‚ Colombo has enough and more of venues where a media briefing could be conducted: a media briefing is two or three speakers telling the media persons, who obviously do not add up to hundreds, what they did, and responding to the queries posted. The TNA MP Sumanthiran saying that the TNA offered its office clearly shows what the purpose of the visit and of the proposed news briefing was and who really would have been behind the whole episode.

‚ Sri Lankans have done many silly things in the past, but they are not such fools as the TNA MPs believe. In spite of vociferous opposition, cajoling and threats by all categories of people -” human rights merchants, peaceniks and ministers of affluent countries -” Sri Lanka pursued the war against the Tamil terrorists to its logical conclusion, and since May 2009, the island has enjoyed peace. Showing the door to the Australian Senator and the New Zealand MP is another of those correct things that the much-maligned Sri Lanka has done.

These two older women probably went there for cheap enjoyment! They received it through the wrong end!

  2. Ananda-USA Says:

These two politicians are part and parcel of the Coordinated Campaign the Eelamist Tamil Diaspora is waging to buy Politicians in other countries and use them to discredit the GOSL on the eve of the CHOGM.

While it is always a loss for Sri Lanka to have foreign politicians joining the enemy, the correct response is INDEED to DEPORT them IMMEDIATELY!

They have ALREADY BEEN BOUGHT with funds and/or vote banks and there is nothing that can be done except to DENY THEM A FORUM in Sri Lanka. On the other hand, these Politicians have tarred and feathered THEMSELVES by allying them selves with RACIST TERRORISM SUPPORTERS; that will be used by their political opponents in the future. Their support for the Eelamists will cost them DEARLY and even WRECK their political careers.

On a related issue, a UK Channel 4 Team has been allowed entry into Sri Lanka.Given the HIGHLY BIASED Campaign being waged by Channel 4 against Sri Lanka, why were they NOT DENIED VISAS and sent back home?

I can guarantee that the reports the Channel 4 Team fies after covering the FLOOD of CRITICISM of Sri Lanka at the CHOGM will ONLY HELP DEMONIZE the GOSL and the Nation EVEN MORE!

Some folk abroad think Buddhist countries are pushovers. You know, expose our jugulars to be slaughtered/bled on the stone of their desires and fears.

This is what Cold War subjugation made Sri Lanka do then – just bow down and take the flak. Now is the time to do damage control. Deport trouble makers, and that includes all illegal migrants. At last, some guts and spine are being shown. Good.

  4. Ananda-USA Says:

The Australian PM seems to understand what Canada, India, and the UK leaders PRETEND NOT TO UNDERSTAND!

There is NO EMPATHY for the VICTIMS of the LTTE; SYMPATHY is reserved for the TERRORISTS!

To the jaundiced holier-than-thou critics of Sri Lanka plying their own self serving agendas, it is only A QUESTION OF WHOSE BULL IS BEING GORED!

Most important civil right in Sri Lanka is to live without threat of war, Australian PM says

    ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Nov 11, Colombo: Affirming his participation in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Sri Lanka this week, the Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the most important civil right is the right to live without the threat of death or violence through a civil war.

In an interview with Alan Jones of Radio 2GB on Monday, the Australian PM said it is getting better in Sri Lanka for the war-affected Tamil people in the North and ordinary civil society is resuming in the Tamil parts of Sri Lanka.

However, he said he will be urging the Sri Lankan Government to respect everyone’s rights when he visits the island to attend the Commonwealth summit beginning on November 15.

When the interviewer referred to the detention of the Australian Green Party senator Lee Rhiannon and the Indian Prime Minister’s refusal to attend the summit on the basis of human rights, the Australian PM said he is attending the summit because he respects the Commonwealth and he wants Australia to be a good participant in the Commonwealth.

“I want us to be a good international citizen generally, but I certainly don’t want us to trash one of the very long-standing and important bodies that we are a senior member of. So, I’ll be going to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Sri Lanka,” Abbott said.

He further noted that Sri Lankan Government is very committed to stopping illegal boat arrivals from Sri Lanka and readily takes back the illegal immigrants.

“If a country is cooperating fully and effectively with Australia, it seems right and proper to maintain the best possible relations with them,” the Australian PM pointed out.

When asked whether he would raise the human rights concerns the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper raised, Abbott replied that he will not lecture other countries on human rights.

“I am not inclined to go overseas and give other countries lectures; really aren’t,” the Australian PM said.

Emphasizing that the Tamil Tigers were the inventors of suicide bombing and “an absolutely vicious outfit” Abbott said it’s not to say that the atrocities were all on one side.

“Now, that’s not to say that the atrocities were all on one side. I don’t pretend that for a second. The Sri Lankan army fought a savage war against the Tamil Tigers and yes, terrible things happened in that war, no doubt about it and it wasn’t all on one side. I accept that. But the war is over,” he said.

“I don’t say everything’s perfect there for a second, but I think things are getting better and while, yes, I will be urging the Sri Lankan Government to respect everyone’s rights, I think I will also be acknowledging that a lot of progress has been made and in the end the most important civil right is the right to live without the threat of death or horrific violence through some civil war,” the Prime Minister said.

  5. Lorenzo Says:

“Most important civil right in Sri Lanka is to live without threat of war, Australian PM says”

    Absolutely!

This further PROVES Tamil votes DON’T COUNT (except in SL and Endia).

Australia’s biggest trade partner is China.
SL does boat diplomacy with Australia successfully.
    GEOPOLITICS.

These 2 factors are MORE IMPORTANT than Tamils votes.

Same with Malaysia where Tamils votes are 6%!!!

In Canada and UK Tamil votes are JUST 2% but they are AGAINST SL. Why?

    Because of GEOPOLITICS.

Canada and UK KNOW FKKKING well about the LTTE. That is what they banned and continue to ban on LTTE PLUS TRO, WTO, etc., etc.

Then why they continue to support the LTTE RUMP?

Because of GEOPOLITICS NOT because of Tamil votes which are INSIGNIFICANT.

IF Tamil votes are the driving force, MALAYSIA would be our biggest enemy after Endia.

Endia is a FOOLISH country. It has put Tamil voters AHEAD of geopolitics. Endia will leanr a bitter lesson for this stupidity.

SL is also foolish to put Tamil voters AHEAD of geopolitics (China).

As many of the above resposes indicate THE TWO women coming from Australia & New Zealand, ar not at all honest about their visit, the purpose etc.

Having a discussion with a TNA MP in Bambalapitya? where on earth are these people coming from? They visit a foregn country under false pretences & support ENEMIES of Lanka, should not have allowed to even land in Sri Lanka.

From an Australian who responded, gave more information about these TWO, that they were supported by LTTE rump. It is NOT surpriseing to see, they always FLOCK to the undesirables & try to complain about PRESS FREEDOM or lack of it in Sri Lanka.
I say good riddens like the Indians, we have accomodated them in Lanka too long…….Thank ou all…J

  7. Sooriarachi Says:

These two lawmakers in Australia & NZ respectively, have clearly violated the laws applicable to tourists visiting Sri Lanka, and have by behaved in a arrogant manner and engaged in divisive communal politics. They have met former Tiger proxies but failed to meet the victims of Tiger Terrorism, the Sinhalese and Muslims.
They have been blind supporters of the views expressed by Tamil separatists and their so called “findings” were a foregone conclusion, as was the case with Navi Pillai.
These two lawmakers need to apologise to the authorities that issued them visas to visit Sri Lanka, for having misused the declared purpose of the visit.

  8. ranjit Says:

When our own bankrupt politicians do things against our country what these two ladies did was not suprising. As long as we have traitors to the Motherland this will go on and we must be alert and our inteligence should keep an eye on these trouble makers. Nobody can dictate to us how to run our country. Our leaders were appointed to Govern the country with the democrtatic vote and those politicians who cry loud wont represent the majority but only a handful. We must salute great leaders like Tony Abbot the Australian Prime Minister for his genuine comments about the CHOGOM and why he visits Sri Lanka.

Past is past we must look for the future. No country in the world saw such progress after a bloody terrorism for thirty years. It was a horrible war same like two countries at war. Those LTTE terrorists had everything in their arsenal. They were having,Army,Navy Airforce,Suicide bombers etc and how anyone can say they are not terrorists. They were born killers who did not care human lives and we Sinhalese gave them a new life where no country will do. Let those white stooges go with our Sinhala and Tamil traitors to each corner of our Motherland and see for themselves what kind of freedom those Tamils have now in their own places. Speak the truth without spreading false bogus stories about our beautiful Motherland. I hope all heads of states who visits our country will realize the truth and be friendly to our country in the future. India and Canada can go to hell.We do not welcome enemies to our land. Let them mind their own business and allow us to live in peace.

Both women came with hidden agenda. They wanted to get arrest then make that to a big issue and create anti Sri Lanka opinion and pressure Australia and New Zealand prime ministers not to attend CHOGM. Luckily immigration department had done the job. Those two women have violated the immigration law then they have deported accordingly.
Those two women say they came for a fact finding mission. But three days before the CHOGM meeting what sort of fact findings they can do. If so why they organized a media conference at racist tamil party head office? Still some corrupted politicians lick racist tamil terrorist’s boot for few dollars?
But tamil racists failed badly as Australia and New Zealand prime ministers confirmed their attending to CHOGM.
“New Zealand Prime Minister John Key says calls to block Sri Lanka taking over as the chair of the Commonwealth are likely to be fruitless because it is an automatic position for the host of the biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting.”
“Australia’s Prime Minister Tony Abbott has reaffirmed his decision to attend the Commonwealth summit, saying it was important to maintain a good relationship with Sri Lanka”.

To refer to these two women as ‘lawmakers’ is to abuse the English language. The Australian Greens senator Lee Rhiannon, for one, is certainly no lawmaker – lawbreaker would be more appropriate a description. She is a weirdo, a consummate trouble maker; put simply, she’s ‘bad news’, to be avoided like the plague. SL should never have allowed her in to the island in the first place.

The authorities were indeed right to end the stay of these women and send them off packing. In doing so, the authorities have shown clear intent, and no pussy footing, and thank God for that.

One reason why the SL government is facing all manner of problems with the so called international community is that, with most things, it has failed to act decisively and without delay. The government must think things through properly, come to an informed decision and then act without delay. There will always be the expected protest but these things don’t last. By not acting decisively and straightaway, you give your detractors more time to organise themselves and keep the issue burning.

GOSL: Wait NO MORE …. DEPORT this SOB’s Deepak Obhrai and Shelley Whiting from Sri Lanka … IMMEDIATELY … for violating protocol and violating official instructions!

Furthermore, STATION Army guards at all cemeteries in the North and East to prevent a recurrence during CHOGM and RAZE ALL LTTE cemetries at the EARLIEST opportunity!

The Allies of WW II DO NOT HONOR the Nazi war criminals; Sri Lanka SHOULD NOT ALLOW Eelamist war criminals to be HONORED either!

Canadian MP Deepak Obhrai, Parliamentary Secretary to Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Human Rights, yesterday laid flowers at the Elephant Pass cemetery on his way back from Jaffna.

A senior government official alleged the flowers had been for those who died fighting for the LTTE, a proscribed organisation in Canada.

Obhrai is in Sri Lanka for the three-day Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) scheduled to begin on Friday. The MP represents Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

A senior security official alleged that the Canadian’s gesture was meant to placate the LTTE activists in Canada.

Asked whether Sri Lanka would protest to Canada against the laying of flowers, the official said that the Commonwealth Secretariat should explain its position. He said that the Canadian Prime Minister’s representative was accompanied to the cemetery by the Canadian High Commissioner in Colombo Shelley Whiting.

They entered the cemetery in spite of a Sri Lankan official accompanying them requesting them not to lay flowers there.

Officials alleged that other delegations visiting Jaffna, too, would try to follow the Canadians. Among those expected to visit Jaffna were British and New Zealand delegations.

Earlier, Obhrai cancelled a media briefing scheduled at Canadian High Commissioner’s Colombo residence on Monday at 6.00 p.m.

Demonstration against Sri Lanka opposition MP’s media conference with Channel 4 journalists

    ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Nov 13, Colombo: A tense situation has erupted outside Sirikotha, the headquarters of Sri Lanka’s main opposition United National party after demonstrators protesting the party’s media conference yesterday with the controversial Britain’s Channel 4 journalists.

A large crowd gathered outside the party headquarters this afternoon to protest against the media conference held by the UNP Parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera with a group of media personnel from Channel 4 including the controversial movie director Callum Macrae.

The protesters blocked the Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe’s vehicle from entering the party headquarters where the party has organized an exhibition on Human Rights and the Implementation of LLRC recommendations with the participation of family members of missing persons in the North today.

UNP sources said Wickremasinghe’s vehicle was attacked and slightly damaged but the Opposition Leader was not harmed.

A group called “Maubima and War Heroes Protection Movement” has organized the protest.

Speaking to the national radio, the Colombo Municipal Council member Saman Abeygunarathne charged that MP Samaraweera has launched a conspiracy against the country in association with the foreign media personnel.

He said the objective of Mangala Samaraweera was to destroy the freedom ushered in by the war heroes under the guidance of the President and Wickremasinghe is also supporting the conspiracy.

Meanwhile, Samaraweera said that Tamil people travelling to Colombo from the North to attend the human rights summit organized by the party at Sirikotha have been stopped by security forces personnel.

He claimed that the buses the people were travelling in had been stopped and some of the passengers were assaulted by the security forces.
