GOSL must initiate Website & Hotline to report LTTE supporters & funding details

In what has sent shockwaves across the world, LTTE Diaspora & supporters both local and international are now a worried lot. Legally, they are cornered. Their propaganda machinery has now been checkmated with a UN Security Council Resolution that is both mandatory and binding. With the declaration of LTTE and 16 LTTE front banned and blacklisting of 424 individuals the momentum to rope in the rest of the beneficiaries of LTTE terror over 3 decades should be the next course of action the GOSL must take. Sri Lanka’s diplomacy must go an extra mile to demand that the very nations bellowing about ‘accountability’ need to now clean up their own yards and bring to book all the linchpins that have stockpiled LTTE exhorted monies and other illegally acquired funding. Moreover, all those in the cocktail circuits and who have been recipients of LTTE funds over the years for their ‘academic expert opinions’ must also be exposed. It also affords a long awaited opportunity for Tamils who had been coerced and manhandled into making ‘voluntary’ donations to the LTTE kitty over 3 decades to come out and name those to whom payments had been made.

The following are the listed LTTE & LTTE fronts:

01.      Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam a.k.a LTTE a.k.a Tamil Tigers – EN/CA/2013/01

02.      Tamil Rehabilitation Organization a.k.a TRO. – EN/CA/2013/02 (Sri Lanka & Overseas)

03.      Tamil Coordinating Committee a.k.a TCC – EN/CA/2013/03

04.      British Tamil Forum a.k.a BTF – EN/CA/2013/04 (Operating from London, UK)

05.      World Tamil Movement a.k.a WTM – EN/CA/2013/05 (Operating from Canada)

06.      Canadian Tamil Congress a.k.a CTC – EN/CA/2013/06 (Operating from Canada)

07.      Australian Tamil Congress a.k.a ATC – EN/CA/2013/07 (Operating from Australia)

08.      Global Tamil Forum a.k.a GTF – EN/CA/2013/08 (Operating from UK)

09.      National Council Of Canadian Tamils a.k.a NCCT a.k.a Makkal Avai – EN/CA/2013/09 (Operating from Canada)

10.      Tamil National Council a.k.a TNC – EN/CA/2013/10 (Operating from Norway, Italy , Switzerland, France, Canada.)

11.      Tamil Youth Organization a.k.a TYO – EN/CA/2013/11 (Operating from Australia)

12.      World Tamil Coordinating Committee a.k.a WTCC. – EN/CA/2013/12

13.      Transnational Government Of Tamil Eelam a.k.a TGTE – EN/CA/2013/13

14.      Tamil Eelam Peoples Assembly a.k.a TEPA – EN/CA/2013/14

15.      World Tamil Relief Fund a.k.a WTRF – EN/CA/2013/15

16.      Headquarters Group a.k.a HQ Group – EN/CA/2013/16

The above categorized Foreign Terrorist Organizations are allegedly  led by the following 4 key individuals.

1.        Perinbanayagam Sivaparan alias “Nediyavan”;

2.        Rev.Fr. SJ Emmanuel

3.        Visuvanathan Ruthirakumaran

4.        Sekarampillai Vinayakamoorthy alias Vinayagam

Additionally, the gazette notification mentions 424 individuals from 19 countries (Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, India, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, UK and USA) including Sri Lanka 30 of who are women. Included into the list is Usha Sriskandarajah a ‘senator’ of the TGTE who claims her heroines are Issipriya the LTTE ‘journalist’, Vany Kumar the member of TYO and Ananthi Sasitharan spouse of Elilan who is responsible for over 10,000 child conscriptions.

The ban entitles the freeze on all funds, assets and economic resources belonging to or owned by the designated persons or entities and such frozen assets cannot be removed or transferred or dealt without the explicit permission of the Competent Authority – in this case the Defense Secretary.

The Sri Lankan authorities are to disclose details of the actions committed by the entities and individuals the GOSL has now banned and is likely to take legal action through courts in the host countries where the LTTE fronts have been dominating over the years. This spells doom for a lot of LTTE fronts some of whom have had direct access to foreign parliaments and have been wining and dining with foreign parliamentarians. This is also an opportunity for some assertive policy with regard to Adele Balasingham and her list of crimes which the Sri Lankan public have been demanding from the GOSL but which have fallen on deaf ears of the key players in the External Affairs Ministry whose heart is not in the job they do and follow the ‘bayagulla’ policy primarily because their feet are not firmly on the ground and their heart is not concerned about protecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nation.

If the 424 individuals and designated organizations are to be placed on a ‘black list’ it also entails the need for Sri Lankan Authorities to quickly round up names of all persons both local and international who had been associating with these entities over the years. They need to also enter some sort of list too.

The ITAK and TNA are the biggest losers no doubt for they must now be scratching their heads on how to bring in the funds and this obviously will knee-jerk them into striking some political pinches with the Government in a bid to provide a compromise the status quo. This is where the GOSL must not play politics with the situation. Like the manner Sri Lanka took on the enemies to eliminate the ground force, the GOSL must now ensure that the remaining terrorist elements in civvies are equally dealt with. If this is kept as a cancer and open wound now allowed to heal the GOSL will be doing the same mistake the previous Governments committed simply to stay in power.

With the tigers now cornered and the supporters now worried the GOSL and authorities must push forward and be assertive with the foreign governments demanding cooperation against these entities. Scores of Tamils victim to LTTE Diaspora bullying over the years are waiting in silence to line up and make their grievances known. These are witnesses and they should be given protection and their evidence should be tabulated in confidentiality.

The GOSL and authorities need to immediately address this requirement by creating a website/ a hotline with confidentiality clauses so that people can report on bank accounts, members who are holding LTTE assets, people are pretend to be ordinary people but are kingpins in the LTTE policy making strategies….there are people to name who these are and the GOSL must not lose the opportunity but quickly set up a system to tabulate these details.

The likelihood of even NGOs falling into the cobweb of trouble for their dealings with these banned entities cannot be ruled out. So too will members who have enjoyed travel, remuneration etc from the banned kitty. We need to know who these individuals are. The members of the media of Sri Lanka are likely to also be recipients of such hand outs as are even officials.

While the main kingpins of the LTTE fronts have also been named, the banned list also includes former TNA MP from Batticoloa now resident in UK. Also named are LTTE leaders who were head of TRO and in charge of LTTE economic division both who are now in Europe. Ponnaiah Aanandarajan is also included for retaining vast amounts of LTTE money and there are many others likely to belong to this category as well.

Hot on the heels of the ban is the alleged arrest of the deputy leader of the Nediyavan Group with the help of Iranian and Malaysian authorities and brought to Colombo recently. He was caught in transit in Iran flying from Malaysia to London under a false passport on a tip off. He had been on his way to join his family (Wife and 4 children) in Germany. Brought to Sri Lanka he is said to be willing to cooperate with the Sri Lanka authorities and no doubt the authorities in Sri Lanka must be elated at the willingness to spill the beans on LTTE activities overseas.

Incidentally, the deputy leader is like most Tamils registered as ‘refugee’ but moving in and out of countries under false passports. How many more Tamil ‘refugees’ are doing this same business? The deputy leader was tasked with propaganda and issuing false statements on behalf of the LTTE living on foreign shores as a ‘refugee’. So we ask how many other ‘refugees’ have been running LTTE propaganda activity overseas?

For too long the public both in Sri Lanka and overseas have been fooled by a handful of people who have used money and politics to wriggle their way through systems and processes. In their cart may be influential and powerful foreign and local MPs and other politicians and even international players but the fact that these entities have been involved in terror activities which have now been officially declared banned gives the onus for assertive action and departure from a ‘bayagulla’ approach.

We must now clean the stables both at home and abroad and bring justice for all the people who have fallen victim, who live injured and who continue to be threatened into maintaining the LTTE kitty so that these leaders and their cohorts can enjoy luxury living and hold VVIP positions globally.

The GOSL must now enable the public both in Sri Lanka and overseas to come forward and lodge their statements regarding the activities of the LTTE members in the gazette as well as others who have been associating with them – whether these are foreign, local, from NGOs or INGOs or even the UN and foreign governments it is immaterial. They have all been aiding and abetting terrorism and that is what we need to now document and keep.

The ban necessitates that the President in particular take a closer look at the line ministries tasked to deliver where external factors matter. We cannot continue to follow a policy that bases actions on knee-jerk situations and on ad hoc basis. We need leadership, we need to have our Ministry officials fighting back, countering attacks. Countries with scores of Resolutions against it are not afraid because their officials are not shy to deliver the punches at diplomatic levels. Cuba, Venezuela, Syria and even Israel officials speaking at UN forums are eloquent and assertive and follow a no-nonsense approach. We need to admit that our officials lack that assertiveness and they lack this because they do not feel they are a stakeholder in Sri Lanka, they do not feel pride in the heritage of the country or function with passion to protect that heritage. They are living Oxbridge lives which pursue values that differ to Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage and ancient value systems. There is a major deficit that the President needs to seriously look at for we cannot be going for diplomatic discussions if our men/women do not have the passion to sail Sri Lanka through storms and simply prefer to strike a compromise which is likely to be detrimental to the country in the long term.

At the end of the day the public is all the while fearful that the leaders are compromising the sacrifices made by our brave ranawiruwo who laid down their lives to bring peace.

Now that Sri Lanka has another opportunity, we should not rest with the ban per se. We need to now identify all elements associated with the banned LTTE and LTTE fronts and expose them all and even Tamils are prepared to come out and name these entities.

Petition against ITAK filed in Supreme Court

    By Stanley Samarasinghe

A petition was filed in the Supreme Court yesterday, challenging the constitutionality of the Ilankai Tamil Arusu Kachchi (ITAK), the electoral vehicle of the Tamil National Alliance, under the controversial 6th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka.

The petitioner prayed Court to declare that ITAK is a political party, which has the establishment of a separate state, within the territory of Sri Lanka, as one of its aims and objects.
The 6th Amendment to the Constitution passed by the J.R. Jayewardene administration, resulted in the vacation of Parliament seats by the Tamil United Liberation Front, which was until then the de facto Opposition in the then Parliament.

Petitioner H.K. Don Chandrasena, of G16 National Housing Scheme, Polhena in Kelaniya, filed the petition through Attorney-at-Law, Madhubashani Rajapaksa, in terms of Article
157A (4) of the Constitution of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. The Article 157 A (4) of the Constitution states that ” Where any political party or other association or organisation has as one of its aims or objects the establishment of a separate state, within the territory of Sri Lanka, any person may make an application to the Supreme Court for a declaration that such political party or other association or organisation has as one of its aims or objects the establishment of a separate State within the territory of Sri Lanka. The Secretary or other officer of such political party or other association or organisation shall be made a respondent to such application.”

The Article 157 A (1 ) also prohibits any person from directly or indirectly, in or outside Sri Lanka, supporting, espousing, promoting, financing, encouraging or advocating the establishment of a separate State within the territory of Sri Lanka.
Article 157 (2) states: No political party or other association or organisation shall have as one of its aims or objects the establishment of a separate state within the territory of Sri Lanka.

Mavai S. Senadhiraja, Secretary ITAK, Mahinda Deshapriya, Commissioner of Elections, and the Attorney General are cited as the respondents by the petitioner.
The petitioner stated that he is entitled to petition the Supreme Court regarding the matter as it falls within the purview of the Sixth Amendment. The petitioner also stated that the Sixth Amendment to the Constitution has allowed any citizen to make an application to the Supreme Court, citing any political party secretary, association or organisation which has as one of its objectives, the establishment of a separate state within the territory of Sri Lanka as respondents.

ITAK, which is duly registered under the Election Law, is a political party whose aims and objects includes the establishment of a separate state within the territory of Sri Lanka, the petitioner stated.

The petitioner stated that the ITAK Party Constitution, which was submitted to the Election Commissioner’s Office dated 20-5-1981, has stated that the objective of the ITAK is to establish political economic and cultural liberation among Tamil people by way of forming autonomous Tamil government and autonomous Muslim government as a part of a United Con-federation of Federal Sri Lanka in accordance with principles of self determination.

Therefore, the petitioner has requested the Court to issue notice on the respondents and issue a declaration that the ITAK is a political party which has among its aims and objectives, the establishment of separate state. The petitioner has also sought that the Court subjects the leaders of the ITAK to the provisions of Article Five of the Sixth Amendment.

The “Brutal Phase” of the Eelam war was over in 2009. Yet we have been pointing out to the Government the most dangerous phase of the – the “International Phase” has to be faced immediately. But MR and the rest went on “War Triumph Jubilation” holding Provincial Elections to show the world his kingship completely overlooking the dangers that were emerging in the international arena.

Some people learn things foreseeing and yet other learn the hard way of getting hit brutally. So even at this stage it is heartening to observe this Government has learned it the hard way. I see a news item today, stating that TNa has challenged the Government to ban it. No doubt TNA has gone under cover of ITAK and it is best to wait for the outcome of this case in courts. Also I hope that MR will watch the situation very carefully and act swiftly to curb the challenges that would be brought to bear on Sri Lanka by these Diaspora LTTE rump.

I say it again: IT IS TIME TO BRING THAT PATRIOTIC ACT in line with the one adopted in USA. MR let us fortify ourselves against these international terrorists including the DIPLOMATIC TERRORISM.

Will ITAK reject its own 20-5-1981 manifesto like usual COW-ARDS or will they get DEVINE JUSTICE within 11 days again for such RACISM?

I fully agree. Sri Lanka should also question the authenticity of the Tamil National Alliance as being a true political body that represents the aspirations of those who elected them and her manifesto which contains words of treason when it still supports the formation of Eelam. The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) should face charges, their assets in Sri Lanka frozen and if the charges stick then they should be disbanded and the appropriate penalty served.

At last what we have been saying for so long has been actually done i.e. ITAK alias TNA has been taken to Courts. ITAK has been taken to Courts and hopefully the Law of the Land prevails this time.

Amazing how such an outfit such as the ITAK (founded in 1949), can continue for so long after the 6-A (Aug 1983) was made Law. That is, 65 yrs after ITAK was formed it is still in existence in spite of the call to Separatism (plus Vadukoddai Resolution (1976) calling for Separatism through Terrorism, added on). Also, note that ITAK has survived for 31 yrs after the 6-A prohibiting and making Separatism a criminal act, was made Law ! What other democracy in the whole world has allowed such absurd tolerance – Sri Lanka has been too accommodative and overly tolerant ?

    ———————-

    History of ITAK :

    Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

represents the Sri Lankan Tamil ethnic minority in the country. It was originally formed in 1949 as breakaway faction of the All Ceylon Tamil Congress (ACTC). In 1972 ITAK merged with the ACTC and Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) to form the Tamil United Front, which later changed its name to Tamil United Liberation Front. ITAK remained dormant until 2004 when a split in the TULF resulted in ITAK being re-established as an active political party. ITAK is constituent party of the Tamil National Alliance.

    Federal Party
ITAK was founded in late 1949 by a group of three Ceylon Tamil parliamentarians, S. J. V. Chelvanayakam, C. Vanniasingam and Senator E. M. V. Naganathan, who had withdrawn from G. G. Ponnambalam’s ACTC over the latter’s decision to enter the UNP government of D. S. Senanayke. ITAK called itself the Federal Party (FP) in English.
Policies adopted by successive Sri Lankan governments, and the 1956 success of the Sinhala nationalist government under Solomon Bandaranaike, made the FP the main voice of Sri Lankan Tamil politics. Increased racial and political tension between the country’s ethnic groups led three political parties representing the ethnic minorities (FP, ACTC and the CWC) to form the Tamil United Front (TUF) in 1972. The TUF became increasingly nationalistic and by 1976 it had renamed itself as the Tamil United Liberation Front and was advocating an independent Tamil state. The CWC subsequently left the TULF.
The TULF became the first Tamil nationalist party to run on a separatist platform in the 1977 election. It gained a majority of the votes in the north and east, won 18 seats, and became the largest opposition party in parliament. As Tamil nationalism turned violent and civil war broke out, the TULF remained the moderate face of Tamil politics. It became the target of nationalists on both sides and many of its leaders were assassinated.
    Tamil National Alliance

In 2001 the TULF formed a political alliance, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), with other moderate Tamil parties as well as number of former militant groups. The TNA contested the 2001 parliamentary election under the TULF name and won 15 seats. Subsequently the TNA began to make a more pro-Tamil Tiger stance, recognising the Tigers as the sole representative of the Sri Lankan Tamils. This caused a split within the TULF. Some members of the TULF, led by its President V. Anandasangaree, were opposed to the Tigers. Anandasangaree refused to allow the TNA to use the TULF name during the 2004 parliamentary election. This caused the members of TULF who wished to remain with the TNA to resurrect the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi name. ITAK is a registered political party and the TNA has contested all elections since the 2004 parliamentary election under the ITAK name.

And of course, we are all familiar with the current prominence of the TNA.

Come to Sri Lanka, COME my dear Eelamist Diaspora Operatives; report and surrender to the Sri Lanka authorities, and seek redress through the Sri Lanka Courts.

Bear in mind though, that the Courts may decide that you are GUILTY AS CHARGED, and Punish you SEVERELY as you DESERVE! Then, ATONEMENT for your CRIMES will be KEY to your Survival.

But if you are as INNOCENT as you claim, dear Eelamist Babes in the Wood and Wailing Victims of the Diaspora, then consider it to be a TEST of your CONVICTIONS! EARN the Redress … if you Deserve it! No BLANKET ABSOLUTION of SINS will be given to you.

I PREDICT that NONE OF THESE CRIMINALS will seek redress IN PERSON through Sri Lanka’s courts; they will only seek to OVERTURN the BAN through POLITICAL PRESSURE exerted from abroad while they themselves hide abroad! That should not be accepted by the Courts; they should first surrender to the jurisdiction of our courts.

For DECADES I have called for the BANNING/PROSCRIPTION of these Terrorist outfits and individuals, and their PUNISHMENT under the Laws of Sri Lanka. I am ABSOLUTELY ECSTATIC that is FINALLY happening NOW!

Redress for 423 Individuals Linked to Terror in Lanka

    OutlookIndia.com
    April 09, 2014

The Sri Lankan military today said legal redress would be available to the 423 individuals, including 32 Sri Lankans currently residing in India, who were designated as financiers of terrorism in the country.

Sri Lanka last week banned the LTTE and 15 other key Tamil diaspora groups for their alleged terror links and prohibited its nationals from making any contacts with them.

Some 423 individuals, including 32 Sri Lankans presently residing in India, were listed as members of the banned LTTE and its offshoots and as financiers of terrorism.

“These individuals have been only designated not banned. If they have an issue with it they have the option of resorting to legal redress,” Defence Ministry spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya said.

“They may even win de-listing if the court deemed our action to be flawed,” he said.

A politician from the North had asked the Sri Lankan government as to why it took so long to designate these individuals if it had the evidence against them.

Responding to the remark, Wanigasooriya said: “This was because of his ignorance. These things cannot be done overnight. We have to go through a complex process of verification before any action could be taken.”

Sri Lankan Defence Ministry has said it would now be requesting foreign governments to take action against the designated groups and individuals as per the UN Security Council resolution 1373 which is binding on all states.

New York-based rights group Human Rights Watch has flayed the move. It said the decision to label the LTTE and 15 overseas Tamil groups as financiers of terrorism is so broad that it appears to be aimed at restricting peaceful activism by the country’s Tamil minority.

“The Sri Lankan government is using vague counter terrorism regulations to tie the major diaspora Tamil groups to the ruthless but defunct LTTE,” Asia director at Human Rights Watch Brad Adams said.

“This broad-brush sanction could then be used to punish local Tamil activists and politicians with international ties.”

Oh, By the Way, it took PRESSURE from the Eelamist Diaspora, in the form of US, UK, and EU Block action to drag Sri Lanka to war crimes investigations by the UN to get the GOSL to ACT AGAINST these Eelamist TERRORIST CRIMINALS hiding ABROAD!

Presumably, the US, UK, EU block exerted the PRESSURE, to accelerate the “RECONCILIATION” between the suffering Sri Lankan people, the VICTIMS, and their tormentors … the EELAMIST TERRORISTS, while the GOSL maintained that it will only hinder RECONCILIATION.

Well, HOW DO YOU LIKE the “RECONCILIATION” you are getting now? This is the VAST MAJORITY of the People of Sri Lanka responding to your “Pressure” in a demand for RECONCILING the CRIMINALS to their CRIMES through PUNISHMENT.

I have NEVER BELIEVED in FORGIVENESS for UNREPENTANT murderous terrorists, now wailing for redress in Western countries as innocent victims. CRIMINALS must be PUNISHED, and their innocent VICTIMS PROTECTED now and in the future! This is the DEMAND of the People of DEMOCRATIC Sri Lanka!

The ONLY thing we must do, is to “RECONCILE” the TERRORISTS to their CRIMES, and PUNISH them SEVERELY wherever they can be found hiding under sheepskins.

Arrested LTTE leader being interrogated by Sri Lankan authorities

    ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 10, Colombo: Sri Lankan authorities are interrogating an overseas leader of the defeated Tamil Tiger terrorist organization, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) arrested recently when he entered the country.

Sri Lanka’s Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) of police is questioning the senior LTTE leader Nathagoopan who was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport three weeks ago while entering the country after his deportation from Malaysia.

Nathagoopan was reportedly operating as one of the two deputy leaders of the LTTE’s overseas operations under the command of Perinbanayagam Sivaparan alias Nediyavan.

He was arrested by the Malaysian authorities for using a forged passport and served six months in a Malaysian jail. Malaysian authorities have deported him to Sri Lanka following the end of his sentence, Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said.

Nathagoopan was in charge of LTTE’s media division and has fled the country when the war ended, according to the police spokesman.

Modi was married but left his wife 45 years ago!! Until now he LIED that he was NOT married!! Modi is from a LOW CASTE!! He likes LONELINESS!! All markings of a deranged psychopath like (S)Hitler.

“Narendra Modi, currently the favorite to be India’s next prime minister, had to make an unusual admission on Thursday. The 63-year-old Modi, long famous for being a bachelor without any family, was in fact married.

In fact, he was forced to acknowledge, he gave his vows almost 50 years ago.

The admission came out when Modi filed his nomination for the Vadodara electoral seat, according to the Indian Express. The paper reported that the prime ministerial candidate was forced to declare the assets and liabilities of a spouse under the Representation of the Peoples Act 1951. While Modi acknowledged he had a wife (and reported his own income at Rs. 454,095 or approximately $7,552), he was forced to leave the columns declaring his wife’s assets and liabilities blank.

This wife may come as a surprise to some: Modi has repeatedly said that his lack of family makes him an ideal politician. “I am single, who will I be corrupt for?” he told a campaign rally in February. He had previously told his own biographer that he enjoyed “loneliness.”

To those who’ve been following Modi’s campaign, however, this isn’t so much of a shock. Rumors about Modi’s marriage have been around for a long time: As far back as 2009, journalists were trying to interview Jashodaben Chimanlal Modi, a retired school teacher who was said to be Modi’s wife. Earlier this year, when it became clear that Modi was likely to be India’s next leader, Jashodaben gave an interview to the Indian Express where she said explained that she bore no grudge against her husband for keeping her secret, explaining that it was part of his “destiny.”

What explains a secret wife? According to Jashodaben’s accounting, she and Modi were married when they were 17 and 18 due to an arrangement between their parents. They lived together for three years before separating, with Modi reportedly going to travel the Himalayas, and never coming back.

What led Modi away, it seems, was the teachings of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a strict Hindu organization that is reported to require a vow of celibacy. Modi’s time with the RSS eventually led to his leadership of India’s second largest political party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and his Hindu nationalism is seen as one key aspect of his popularity, though it’s also a key sticking point for his opponents, who accuse him of failing to prevent the 2002 massacre of nearly 2,000 Muslims.

Narendra Modi’s older brother, Sombhai Modi, has issued a statement acknowledging the marriage but arguing that it was forced on his brother due the traditions of the low Ghanchi caste in Vadnagar and was never consummated.

To Modi’s critics, however, his refusal to acknowledge his wife of almost 50 years is a sign of his lack of respect for women. According to various media reports, Jashodaben lives in a one bedroom house and reportedly received a government salary of Rs 14,000 ($233) before she retired. She says she has never remarried after her first experience.

“If a man can’t take care of his wife, how can he take care of the country?” Congress Party national spokesman Rashid Alvi reportedly said.

Updated: A reference to Modi’s caste has been added for context.”
