NEW DELHI: No-frill carrier IndiGo’s Airbus A-320 fleet would now on undergo major maintenance checks in the hangars of SriLankan Airlines in the island nation.

An agreement to this effect was signed between SriLankan and IndiGo’s parent company, InterGlobe Aviation Limited, to enable the Indian carrier’s fleet of 78 A-320s undergo ‘C’ checks by SriLankan’s Engineering Division at the country’s second international airport, Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) in Hambantota, a SriLankan release said.

A ‘C’ check is performed approximately every 20-24 months or a specific amount of actual flight hours or as defined by the manufacturer.

This extensive check requires a large majority of the components to be inspected in a hangar, thus putting the aircraft out of service for almost two weeks.

The agreement would not only help IndiGo to save a considerable amount by not sending an airplane to Europe for similar checks, but also secure a multi-million dollar revenue for SriLankan over the long duration of the agreement.

The SriLankan’s Maintenance, Repairs and Overhaul (MRO), training and other related infrastructure facilities at MRIA celebrated its first year of operations last month.

“This agreement stands as confirmation of the level of trust SriLankan Engineering has always maintained among its partners and the efficiency of world class service offerings it has maintained in its 30 year long history of operations.

“In addition, with Sri Lanka fast moving ahead in terms of developing itself as a hub for air and sea transport, this agreement will kick start the MRO operations at the MRIA which will deliver the same high quality and efficiency,” SriLankan’s CEO Kapila Chandrasena said.

SriLankan Engineering has been providing quality maintenance services to state-of-the-art technology aircraft for the past two decades. Its specialities include servicing and repair of airframes, engines, component maintenance and inventory management, Base Maintenance services in Colombo. It has satellite operations in South India and Male
