Downfall of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa

Jayalalithaa who was accused of a Rs 660 million disproportionate assets case had been sentenced to 4 years imprisonment by the Special Court in Bangalore. The main accusation had been she had undervalued her assets. She had been fined Rs 1000 million. She had lost her post as Chief Minister and she is also barred from contesting elections for 10 years. Her plea for a lenient judgment had been turned down. Autocratic Jayalalithaa was reminded that nobody is above the law.
Jayalalithaa´s `hobby horse` was making false allegations of discrimination against Tamils in Sri Lanka. She is all out for separatism in Sri Lanka. She was rousing the sentiments of the Tamils in Tamil Nadu mainly for their votes. Further, she encouraged Indian fishermen to fish in Sri Lankan territorial waters on the ground that they had an inherent right to do so. Thus Indian fishermen trespassing into Sri Lankan waters created problems to fishermen in the North. The situation became worse as the Indian fishermen used illegal methods for fishing. Jayalalithaa´s involvement in the ´fishing business` was because all the fishing trawlers used by the Indians were owned by her political supporters. The fishermen were mere employees of big businessmen supporting the Chief Minister.
Now that Jayalalithaa is behind bars we hope that her successor will resolve this fishermens issue amicably. Ironically, the TNA representing the Tamils in the North is turning a blind eye to the illegal fishing by the South Indians as they are depending on their support for separatism in Sri Lanka.

Big relief the Big Fat F**t is out of Tamil Nadu politics. However this is not the first time she has been taken to prison. She has a habit of resurrecting herself as there are many of her followers in Tamil Nadu and powerful friends in India and abroad. Also the man who is going to be the next Chief Minister is one of her acolytes.
In 2001 Christian Ranil did the heinous crime of going to talks with the LTTE terrorists and offering them peace instead of doing what President Rajapakse did in 2005. Many lives would have been saved if the traitorous Christian Chandrika / Christian Ranil combo took the fight to the LTTE terrorist gaining support from the international cry against terrorist post 9/11, without offering olive branch.
TNA should be brought to justice for its affiliations with the LTTE terrorists and for frauds. We must fully utilise the international environment today. Viggie is a traitor who had all the luxuries, education, married to a Sinhala woman, high position in the judiciary all in the South and yet has the gall to say Tamils are discriminated.

Yes the TNA seems to support Jayalalitha’s big business fishermen, rather than the Northern Tamil fishermen. TNA is also protesting against the setting up of the Northern Naval base, though it is the Navy that is providing protection to Sri Lankan fishermen.
Jayalalitha tried hard to divert attention from her corrupt activities by constantly doing anti-Sri Lankan things, but it did not work for her. This is the type of bold independent judicial system Sri Lanka too needs. If that happens, many politician and Government officials would be taken to task for supporting the Tigers and other corrupt activiyies.

Amma is the Goddess of Stupidity.
She doesn’t care these Demila Modayas but steals their money to turn into a hamburger. But the Modayas kill themselves. I thought Andy Malli went to respect/ worship her in Jail.

Jayalalithaa shed buckets of tears for Sri Lankan Tamils. I hope she will atleast consider sending 11,000 Sarees of the 12,000, and 700 pairs of shoes of the 750, to the Srilankan Tamil women. She does not need the Sarees anymore. She will only need slippers. Hope she will have a “large” heart to release them soon. She can keep the Gold for a little while more.

Jayaram Jayalalitha is one of India’s most colourful and controversial politicians.
A former actress, her career has been marked by a series of highs and lows.
Head of the AIADMK party, she has served as chief minister of the southern state of Tamil Nadu on four occasions – from 1991-96, briefly in 2001, 2002-06 and 2011 to 2014.
She has alternated in power over most of this time with her great rival, 90-year-old M Karunanidhi, leader of the DMK party.
Powerful political connections
In most cases Jayalalitha’s lows have been followed by dramatic political comebacks in which she has been reinstated as Tamil Nadu chief minister.
But correspondents say that bouncing back from her latest setback in 2014 – a four-year jail sentence for corruption – will be one of the toughest challenges of her political career.
To do it, she will need to launch an appeal, which can be a time-consuming process despite her powerful political connections.
But it is not the first time she has been sent to prison for corruption – she spent a brief time in jail over corruption charges in 1996.
Jayalalitha’s admirers say she has played a key role in the development of the state of Tamil Nadu as one of India’s most economically influential states.
She has championed the cause of the rural and urban poor by introducing subsidised food canteens, providing free laptops to thousands of school pupils and students and launching other populist schemes like giving away food mixers and grinders to families.
Pet projects
But critics say she has established a personality cult in Tamil Nadu over the years and indulged in an overtly over-extravagant lifestyle.
Many publicly funded projects are named after her, such as the canteens scheme.
The canteens are known as Amma Canteens – Amma in Tamil is Mother, an honorific euphemism by which Jayalalitha is addressed by her followers in the state.
These were followed by other equally populist schemes like Amma Bottled Water, Amma Salt, Amma Pharmacies and more recently, Amma Cement.
Her critics say that she has used the Tamil Nadu Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) – which has a monopoly on the sale of alcohol in the state – to pay for many of her pet projects.
The liquor policy of the State Government has been criticised for impoverishing households and ruining people’s health.

The allegations made against her over the years have been extensive – from arranging for her opponents to be beaten up to spending large amounts of taxpayers’ money on lavish wedding ceremonies.
Some of these allegations have veered towards the outlandish – on one occasion she was accused of losing her temper with her auditor and assaulting him.
Jayalalitha first came to political prominence in the late 1980s, although she was well known as an actress before then, starring in more than 100 films.
Naturally charismatic, she was brought into politics by the then actor-turned-chief minister, MG Ramachandran, with whom she starred in many of her films.
Three years after his death in 1987, she took over his All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Khazagham (AIADMK) party as well as the state, and proved equally adept at retaining the political base of the party.
Stories about her extravagance are legendary, and many of her worshipping followers are known to profess their loyalty through bizarre acts such as walking on hot coals or drawing her portrait with their blood.
Incidents of her followers setting fire to themselves whenever she faced political setbacks are not unknown.
Rivalry
During the various times she has served as Tamil Nadu chief minister, huge cut-outs of her figure have dominated the Tamil Nadu skyline.
Her ministers have on occasions been reported to prostrate themselves at her feet.

During one raid on her premises following a corruption allegation in 1996, police said they had found large quantities of diamond-studded gold jewellery, more than 10,000 saris and 750 pairs of shoes.
Her emergence as an increasingly important regional politician was clearly seen in the run-up to the 2009 elections, when she threw her support behind a grouping of regional parties and communists seeking to establish a “third front” to challenge India’s two main coalitions.
But throughout her career, Jayalalitha’s critics painted her as a deeply corrupt figure who has manipulated the system and sees herself as above the law.
She has been in and out of the courts, defending herself against allegations.
She also reportedly nursed ambitions of a greater national political role and in the run-up to the 2014 Indian parliamentary elections, her followers projected her as a prime ministerial candidate, though she did not openly endorse it.

Used to the cultural comforts of having Dravidian parties in the fray, the electorate may take time to align with national parties.
