President Mahinda Rajapaksa has persuaded Chris Nonis, the Sri Lanka High Commissioner in the UK to continue in his post although he got mercilessly assaulted by Sajin Vass Gunawardena, Monitoring MP for the External Affairs Ministry.

Nonis CHe had told Nonis that he will take strong action against Gunawardena but other sources told Colombo Telegraph this was a ploy. He will not take any action against Sajin Vass because he does all his dirty work,” said an External Affairs Ministry source in Colombo.

With the face swollen from a slap, Nonis has left London for Birmingham to attend the Conservative Party annual conference. Among those he is expected to meet there is Opposition Leader,Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Vass Gunawardena and Kshenuka Seneviratne are now known to be very close friends. That is how he gives orders her to change anyone in the Ministry whom he does not like.Last Tuesday night he was drunk on Blue Label Whisky at Dilan Ariyawansa’s New York residence.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who returned to Colombo from New York, after attending the UN has ordered the state and private media to blackout the news and not report anything on this matter. He personally spoke to everyone concerned.

The incident took place at the house of Dilan Ariyawansa, who is now Director of Sri Lankan Airlines in New York. He has thrown a dinner for many members of Rajapaksa’s team taking part in UN General Assembly. Ariyawansa was originally sent to New York as an employee-manager of Sri Lanka Travel Inc. in 2000 by Lalith Kotelawala and was involved in many controversies.

One of the persons who took part in the dinner told the Colombo Telegraph that among those who took part in the dinner were Nonis, Foreign Secretary Kshenuka Seneviratne and Sajin Vass Gunawardena.

In a highly intoxicated state, Gunawardena MP has got involved in an argument with Nonis. He called him a bloody pariah” and accused him of using the words fucking bitch on Kshenuka Seneviratne.” He has raised his hands and given Nonis a thundering slap forcing him to fall on the ground. Thereafter, Gunawardena has continued to kick High Commissioner Nonis. His toe was hurt because of this and he was walking with a bandage.

Nonis did not sit for the string hopper, chicken curry and seeni sambol dinner. He drew to the five star NEW YORK HOTEL Rajapaksa stayed and gave his resignation. The next morning he took a flight from New York to London.

Nonis complained to a member of the Sri Lanka delegation Rajapaksa will not take any action against Gunawardena. He had revealed Rajapaksa told him I will deal with the fellow but nothing will happen, he said

“He had revealed Rajapaksa told him I will deal with the fellow but nothing will happen, he said”

    – Typical of MR.

  2. Hiranthe Says:

this Vas fellow is just another useless and brainless thug living like a parasite off MR. Nonis on the other hand is better than GL for the Foreign Minister post. Let’s see who’s side MR will take.

  3. Nimal Says:

This a sad reflection on the country.I doubt any party could do without these useless people,as the country has many such people.
I wonder how M/S Shenuka Seniviratne is involved in this incident and I must say that she was one of the best we had in London and I knew her well. She worked hard with us to make the President’s speech at oxford union a success.I doubt that those days will ever come as after the victory over the terrorists regime seems to have got big-headed and forgotten it’s grassroots, like all other main parties.

  4. NeelaMahaYoda Says:

President will not be able to take any harsh action against Vas, because Vas is related to First Lady. Mihin air is run by his father. Mahinda R has just crossed the red line. Now We, all expats should do what ever possible to support regime change.

  5. SA Kumar Says:

Nonis did not sit for the string hopper, chicken curry and seeni sambol dinner.!
Hon Dr Nonis you missed out nice food Sir . seeni sambol with chichen curry uuuuuuuuu….

    SENAKA (RATHGAMA KOLLA) says
WHO IS THE ONLY WORLD LEADER WHO GETS A JUNIOR TO SLAP HIS OWN FACE ON THE WORLD’S BIGGEST STAGE MADE FOR FOREIGN DIGNITARIES?

DR. CHRIS NONIS IS A HIGHLY EDUCATED AND A CAREER PROFESSIONAL OF PAR EXCELLENCE, IN MANY FIELDS. AMONG OTHER THINGS HE IS GIFTED WITH, IS AN INHERITED A UNIQUE PERSONALITY MIXING IT FITTINGLY WITH A NATURAL GIFT OF TALENT THAT NOT MANY SRI LANKANS HAVE THE FORTUNE TO INHERIT. BLESS HIM!

CONSIDERING ALL THESE QUALIFICATIONS IN HIM, I BELIEVE THAT DR. NONIS’ IS A WORTHY APPOINTMENT TO REPRESENT OUR COUNTRY AS THE HIGH COMMISSIONER IN A HOTLY INFLUENTIAL COUNTRY IN THE WORLD LIKE UK. OBVIOUSLY THERE WERE PROBLEMS ALL ALONG FOR HIM, EVER INCREASING RESTRICTIONS ON HIM CURTAILING TO PERFORM DUTIES FREE-HAND AS HE WOULD HAVE LIKED IN ORDER TO TAKE THE BENEFIT TO SL. THIS IS NOT ONLY A USUAL MISFORTUNE INVOLVED IN WITH OUR COUNTRY BUT FOR THE REASONS OF PURPORTED MOVES OF CLIPPING DOWN HIS WINGS WHILST NOT ALLOWING, LET ALONE THE FREEDOM, ANY KIND OF FLEXIBILITY TO WORK TO PRODUCE DESIRED RESULTS.

LIKE THE INTELLECTUALS NORMALLY DO, I AM SURE DR. NONIS TOO HAS SEEN IT IN THE EXACT PERSPECTIVE IN WHICH TO UNDERSTAND – HOW METICULOUS AN APPROACH IS DEMANDED TO MAKE THINGS TO WORK IN ITS DIPLOMATIC TOUCH IN HIS CAPACITY AS HC IN DEALING WITH ITS AFFAIRS WITH THIS VERY INFLUENTIAL COUNTRY IN THE WORLD.

HEIGHTENED SADDENING INVOLVEMENT OF A JUNIOR MP’S INCIDENT WITH A PHYSICAL ATTACK ON THE HC LEADING FOR DR. NONIS TO OFFER HIS RESIGNATION IN THE ‘RIGHT-NEXT-MINUTE’ ETC CLEARS SOME DOUBTS IN THE MINDS OF THE GENERAL PUBLIC. THE SIMMERING ISSUE THAT WAS HITHERTO UNDER THE FIRE PLACE AND IRRUPTING AT ONCE LIKE THAT AT THE UNGA CONFERENCE TIME IN THE NYC WAS SOMETHING THAT HASN’T BEEN ALTOGETHER A SECRET TO MANY IN THE FOREIGN SERVICES.

TECHNICALLY, THE HIGH COMMISSIONER OF SL HOLDS THE SAME RANK AS THE PRESIDENT HIMSELF IN A FOREIGN SOIL WHEREVER THE COUNTRY MAKES ITS REPRESENTATION. PART OF THAT ALLOWS HIM TO ENJOY SAME LEVEL OF RESPECT AND ACCOLADES UNTIL SUCH TIME HE PHYSICALLY COMES BEFORE THE PRESIDENT HIMSELF AT ANY GIVEN TIME. THOUGH THIS WAS THE NORM, ON THAT DAY OF THE INCIDENT DURING UNGA CONFERENCE, DR. NONIS HAD BEEN SUBJECTED TO THIS ASSAULT BY AN ORDINARY MP IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE ACT OF COWARDICE NOT BY THAT MP BUT BY THE PRESIDENT FROM BEHIND THE CURTAIN. WOULD YOU EVER BELIEVE THAT AN ATTACK OF SUCH NATURE CAN HAPPEN ‘JUST LIKE THAT’ WITHOUT A FIRM BACK GROUND CONNECTED TO THAT. NO! PRESIDENT IS THE ONE WHO USED HIS JUNIOR MP TO COMMIT THAT FOR HIM. PRESIDENT IS THE ONE, AS EVERYONE KNOWS IT WELL, WHO USES ‘THE STRING PULLING GAME’ IN SL FROM BEHIND THE SCREEN. PRESIDENT IS THE NOTORIOUS PERSON WHO SENDS THESE YOUNG POLITICIANS ON WRONG PATH.

HEAD OF GOVERNMENT IS A NOBLE TITLE. NO ONE SHOULD HARBOUR SUCH THOUGHTS IN THEM TO ACT OR BEHAVE IN SUCH A MANNER TO DAMAGE THE SELF-CHARATER OR THE IMAGE OF THE COUNTRY OR THE DIGNITY OF THAT AUTHORITY. IT IS AUNIVERSAL TRUTH AND NO ONE CAN DENY IT! OR… RELY ON IT!
    THANK YOU

    N.M.Y
Change of regime will not make things any better as our whole political culture must change as well.Previous administrations too had their moment of madness and uncontrollable politicians and public too has come to the gutter level, which I see daily and I am concerned that I have heavily invested in the country of my birth. This country’s growth and prosperity is soley due to hardworking private sector and the government departments are utterly hopeless. We need the suddas to come back and put things right, like in modern China.

  8. Nimal Says:

    Well written Sanaka,
I have met Dr Nonis several time at various functions in UK and he is a decent man and shouldn’t been subjected to this filth that is floating around this administration.Just now Kehlia is trying to pretend that nothing had happened the way it was published in the media. It seems foreign trips are at the expenses of our tax money and they don’t deserve it as they hardly do anything to tackle nagging problems in the country, only the government in power could put an end to it.They hardly do anything.

  9. Marco Says:

I note with puzzlement that Lankaweb has posted an article from Colombo Telegraph when its own article filed by one Sam Silva was removed from LW at very short notice.

With reference to the above, it is rather a shame a diplomat of the calibre of Dr Chris Nonis has been treated in this manner. It remains to be seen if Dr Nonis will be able serve out his term in the UK with dignity, unashamedly and personal integrity intact following this shameful episode. There will no doubt be a musical chairs shuffle in the not too distant future to limit his embarrassment with the UK Lankans.

Interestingly i note, none of the mainstream media in Sri Lanka (controlled by supposedly Christians or Jews or who ever!!!) have reported this incident.

Cabinet spokesman, Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, was put in the spotlight at the weekly post cabinet press briefing today after he said that Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to Britain Dr. Chris Nonis had resigned from his post over a “personal dispute” with a Government Parliamentarian, but later withdrew that statement.
He withdrew this statement after consulting the External Affairs Minister Prof G.L Peiris who had confirmed not receiving a resignation letter from Dr. Nonis. Journalists had pressed Mr Rambukwella if the Presidents’ Office had received such a letter. The Cabinet spokesman would not comment any further.

The commentator above has already mentioned that issues have been simmering for a while and this was perhaps the last straw. Physical assault on senior officials is shameful conduct.

MR should also be aware that incidents of this nature “get out” from the four walls. Who reported this outside of the close circle gathered on that day? Wasn’t there anyone in that circle who could have limited the damage?
Who are these External Affairs Official “sources” willing to speak out?

I ask these question because, I was present at a small private gathering in Colombo a few years ago when a Senior Govt Minister (intoxicated) verbally abused in shocking language a Western Diplomat in the presence of a high ranking foreign bank executive. The host of the gathering was quickly and ably carried out a damage limitation exercise in order that the incident remained in the confinement of the four walls and remains so.

  10. Marco Says:

Following on from my comment above, i watched the news report and the accompanying video reported on newsfirst.lk.
Rambukwella was totally unprofessional in his press briefing for being unprepared for such a briefing and secondly in making a telephone call to the External Affairs Minister in front of the journalist regarding Nonis resignation and retracting his first original statement. This is from our Cabinet Spokesman!
Towards the end of the video there is a little mischievous piece. a repeat of an interview given by Chris Nonis to CNN when he refers to 2500 year civilisation and reference to punching people.
I think it is mischievously put together.
I invite the readers to read and watch the report by newsfirst.lk and let me know if i was wrong.

  11. Naram Says:

Sadly political parties of every hue had been depending on trusted bulldogs to run the affairs, Dodampe Mudalalis, Gonawela Sunils of the past have got replaced with succeeding generations with increasingly worse characters. If one looks at their political pedigree you will find that they have changed their political allegiances with the tidal changes and even top civil servants are quick to get round the bulldog creed as they know where they can dip their snout.

Yet Mahinda has been able to maintain a modicum of decency when compared to the treatment Richard de Zoysa et al received few decades ago, despite the far bigger purses of the opposition, based overseas.

Most exponents in Political manipulation would agree that it remains duplex in choice in every country despite all the theories of parallel universes.

  12. douglas Says:

Marco: I too read the posting by one Silva re. this matter and if I remember correct you were the only one who made a comment after which it was promptly removed. Anyway now this incident is known world wide and it has been “internationalized”. This is nothing but “Illang Paruppu”.

This house party, the venue was the “volcanic irruption” that has been waiting to spew out lava of “hatred”; “cut-throatism”; “petty mindedness”; “uncivilized behaviors”; “thuggery”; akin to the closest associates of our President. Of the three or four involved here, including the host are well known then and now. This Sajin Vas came into the company of MR in Dubai during the time of his visit as the Prime Minister and he became a “bosom pal” when he took him (MR) on the “Desert Safari”. After that, being a crook, established his companionship after noticing MR’s personal weakness of “ego” and prompted him to establish Mihin Air. He carried on at the expense of Public Funds until we were robed of Rs. 3 Billions. From there he was catapulted to the Legislature and made a “Monitoring MP” of External Affairs carrying him all over the world and sitting down with foreign dignitaries. Just imagine the “STUPIDITY” on the part of a President of a country. Now this Sajin is akin to Mervin Silva and he cannot be tamed or controlled. MR is compelled to live with him.

Then Ms. Seneviratne – the Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs. We know how she performed and what stir she created in UK as the High Commissioner. Then she was moved to Geneva and we know her accomplishments there along with this Sajin. The combination is “Thakata Thaka” or “Jadiya to Moodiya” fits very well.

Dr. Nonis, not so known but at least well accomplished in “education” and settled down comfortably in his position in UK. But all that went off when he addressed a woman in that language, now known, “f……bitch”, although in his opinion she deserves it.

Then the host – again known to us as an employee of famous Lalith Kotalawela placed in New York to handle a Travel Outfit ultimately establishing the General Sales Agency of SriLankan Arilines. Now apparently appointed a Director of SriLankan Airlines. How that appointment is done, no body knows especially while holding the management of a Sales Agency of the airline. He is also a relative of the First Lady as claimed by him in New York. So originating from “Kotalawala Empire” and sitting in “MR Empire” stinks a rat.

So this is the “shortest” background of all those involved in this “disaster” and eruption of a “volcano” that tarnished the “IMAGE” the “REPUTATION” of our country and the nation. Anyway, looks like the beginning of the end has started from “WITHIN” and to put it in my village style: “APAYATA HENA GAHALA”. We ordinary folks are looking up and waiting for something to fall from the sky.

ANAY ANICHANG APATA GIYA KALAK. APATA MEHEMA WELA MADI.

  13. douglas Says:

I made my comments and probably awaiting approval for publication.

Marco: I too read and listened to the contents of the web you indicated. All that is about the “Resignation” of the High Commissioner. What we are concerned here is this “ugly” dinner party and the behavior of all those involved in it that brought disrepute and tarnish the image of our country and the nation.

  14. Lorenzo Says:

    Nimal and Senaka,

So you want CFA RANIL, JIHAD HAKEEM, LTTE SAMPANTHAN, etc. to take over the country!

I see no difference between you and the LTTE.

Absolutely not. They have done MORE THAN SLAPPING a diplomat. They have KILLED tens of thousands of people which is worse.

We need to change MR. But we don’t need those pieces of shitt to replace MR. GR should replace MR.

  15. Lorenzo Says:

    NMY,

We have to be careful with REGIME CHANGE.

The INTENDED CHANGE should be BETTER not worse. Pieces of dirt like RUN-NIL, HACK-HIM, LTTE SAMPANTHAN are not the option.

GR should be made the president. MR should step down. That is what patriots should do.

Shiranthi is MR’s Achilles heal (weak point).

  16. radha Says:

I am sick and tired of reading stories of excesses by Rajapaksha’s retinues that travel with him or for that matter surround him in SLK. It is being proved time and time again that the President is surrounded by thugs and brainless bully boys. First that drug baron Kudu Duminda, and now this alugosuwa SVG. How dare he assaults one of the best diplomats this country has ever sent to London. If the President cannot control these hooligan retinue of his, then it is time that he is thrown out by any means.
I thought once that MR was the angel that has saved Sri Lanka, but now I think we would have been better off under Prabhakaran’s rule. VP might have been an ogre of some form, but at least he had some principles and a mission for his people. What we have in MR and his family is personal ambitions for themselves, but sadly achieved through terrorising every citizen in Sri Lanka and overseas, regardless of them being Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim or Burghers. It is an atrocious situation. Governance by a sick family surrounded by psychos.

  17. Lorenzo Says:

MR should step down and GR should take over.

We cannot hand the country back to faggots, jihadists and terrorists. They are WORSE. If anyone says VP was better, he should get his head examined. VP was responsible for over 100,000 killings. The only GOOD THING VP did was he got rid of Tamil racist MPs.

Shiranthi Wickaramasinghe and Sajin Vas are related to Batalande Run-nil. That is where the problem is. NOT on the other side of the family.

  18. Nanda Says:

According to Buddhism, there are six factors for progress or advancement of beings.

    1. Saddha (faith)
    2. Sila ( discipline)
    3. Hiri ( moral fear)
    4. Ottappa (moral shame)
    5. Chayga ( generosity )
    6. Panna ( wisdom)

It is impossible for us to be seen as civilized nation if 2-5 of these are seen as being destroyed daily basis ( not sure of faith, even though most western nations use this as a weapon (God)).

Are we as a Buddhist Nation, progressing in anyway under the current leadership ?

    Meanwhile, UNPIErs together with betrayers having big party and dancing like Jackals, singing “කුඩු, ගංජා, කසිප්පු, ගණිකා, හොර, මැර, වංචා, දුෂණ, ජාත්‍යන්තර වහල් වෙළඳාම, මංකොල්ල, මිනීමැරුම්, ජනතා දේපල සහ සම්පත් කොල්ලකෑම ආදිය ට යොමුකළ ….”

  19. Hiranthe Says:

    I totally agree with Lorenzo,

MR should step down and with him all the dirty dogs will vanish. GR should run for the presidency. He will not tolerate such dirty thugs around him. Then get rid of 13th amendment to finish with Pala Baba.

Give powers to qualified and educated Admin officers like GA’s in the past to manage at District level. Appoint a Tamil GA to Tamil areas so people will not suspect his administration. (Otherwise no matter what, even if you put a re-incarnated Velupillai into a Sinhala family to administer them, they will not trust him. That is what now happens with Governor GA Chandrasiri.. Despite his dedicated service to Tamil community, they don’t trust him..)

  20. Lorenzo Says:

    That’s right Hiranthe.

ALL THE JUNK in govt. are MR’s junk, NR’s junk and BR’s junk. GR is NOT involved with these.

e.g. Mervin, Minnal Ranga, Gonason, Vaas, Hack-him, Tangalle mayor, GLP, DAYAN, DAYAN, DAYAN, etc.

GR (as the UDA chief) was forced to work with DUMBINDA SILVA because he joined the govt and represeted TRADITIONAL UNP voters in Colombo slums.

Lets NOT throw the BABY with the dirty bath water! GR is the baby. Rest of Rajas are the dirty water.

  21. Nimal Says:

    Lorenzo
You got it wrong.I don’t want a regime change but for MR to get a grip of his dogs running wild.
My choice is for not the likes of Ranil but the sudas to run the country again,as we never had it good.Reason why you guys are living in the West.
Perhaps the guy who leaked this information will seek political asylum in US,just like the the ones that gave the video materials to CH 4 and sought refuge.
GR is OK by me.Done well for Colombo.

  22. Dilrook Says:

The ruling clan is heading for predicted demise at a faster speed than expected. It all boils down to votes. These events, if true, strongly affect the votes of educated nationalists. However, the impact on the man on the street is negligible. The sum of all this is the ruling clan losing out many segments. They will not have any significant votes from Tamils and Muslims. It is futile wasting more limited resources on them hoping for a change of preference. It will not happen.

If at the same time, the regime goes attacking the few dedicated nationalists who are doing a great deal, it is self destruction.

As the potential vote base for the ruling clan shrinks even further, its reliance on Sinhala voters increase. Nationalists including NFF, JHU and others must make use of their kingmaking power to make Sinhala demands and join it only if their demands are met. Stakes are very high for the ruling clan that will face war crimes charges if it loses the election.

  23. Dilrook Says:

Dr Chris Nonis is not a career diplomat. However, that doesn’t make him any lesser diplomat. On the contrary, he was the best we had winning the Best Diplomat from Asia award. His articulate responses to international media were the best from any official. His resignation will be a bloody blow to the ministry of external affairs which is very good at prunning the good and promoting the bad. If his deputy, Rutnam is appointed the High Commissioner, that will be another disaster.

  24. Sarath W Says:

Those who call for a regime change must look at what is happening in the middle east. Iraq, Libya and Syria are in a total mess, killing each other with US supplied weapons. Is that what the Rajapaksa haters want? Who do they want to replace the president? An American puppet? Just remember the enemy of your enemy is not your friend.

  25. Marco Says:

I don’t believe radha was serious when she/he states.. “now I think we would have been better off under Prabhakaran’s rule.”
One could argue the point that MR & VP are two sides of the same coin. ie violent behaviour, deep insecurity.

It is equally naive and one insults the intelligence of the man/woman on the streets to say this incident does not have any impact/bearing on them. Exactly how are politicians think.
It may not in the short term but it certainly does in the long term.

Dilrook- I’m curious as to why you think appointing Rutnam as High Commissioner would be another disaster. (if it was to be the case). I would rather you be honest and say – its because he is a Tamil and not some spurious excuse.

  26. Lorenzo Says:

    Well said Sarath.

Actually a similar chaotic situation can help SL get rid of a large number of Tamil Elamists and Jihadists. It will be 1983 to the power 4.

  27. SA Kumar Says:

I would rather you be honest and say – its because he is a Tamil and not some spurious excuse- Well spotted !
