Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi that his government confer Bharat Ratna on Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa under whose leadership the LTTE was eliminated.
“This elimination of the LTTE must be recognised in India as a welcome contribution to our national security, he said in a letter to Narendra Modi.

Bharat Ratna is awarded to those who have served India or Indian interests and is intended to encourage them to continue to serve Indian interests. It will be a great tragedy if the Sri Lankan president wins it or works towards winning it. Only on a very few avenues India and Sri Lanka see eye to eye and Tamil nationalism is not one of them.
