z_p01-No-person.jpgPresident Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said he has already given the green light to abolish the Executive Presidency.

He said he will never hesitate to abolish the Executive Presidency and added that the process of abolishing the Executive Presidency is in progress through the Parliamentary Select Committee.

“The people who talk much about abolishing the Executive Presidency do not really work for it,” the President said addressing an agriculture summit held under the theme Haritha Udanaya Govi Samuluwa at Gannoruwa, Kandy yesterday.

The President said there is no person other than him to abolish or change the Executive Presidency. “The very people who speak loudly about abolishing the Executive Presidency, are in reality reluctant to abolish it,” he said.

President Rajapaksa added that he has never misused the powers of the Executive Presidency.

The President said he used the powers only for the betterment of the country and the people, aiming to bring maximum benefits to all.

“I have not used these powers to betray the country, enter harmful agreements with terrorists, sign death warrants of 600 police officers or ask the police officers to surrender to the LTTE. We used these powers to establish freedom, ensure the country’s security, uplift the economy and protect the country from foreign influences,” President Rajapaksa said.

He said thousands of lives were lost during 30 years of terrorism.

The government liberated the country from terrorism in 2009 to establish peace and harmony for all communities to live in a peaceful country without fear and suspicion, President Rajapaksa said.

He added that the constitution cannot be changed like changing pillows for a headache.

“It was launched entirely against terrorism. As a result of liberating the country from terrorism, all are living peacefully and happily.

The entire country has been placed on a rapid development track after 2009. The Northern province is not an exception since everyone is experiencing peace dividends,” he said.

“We have to adjust to a healthy food culture. The government allocates millions each year for the fertiliser subsidy to strengthen the farming community. The government introduced guaranteed prices for many crops,” President Rajapaksa said. The government allocates Rs. 3,700 million for the fertiliser subsidy annually. Farmers do not commit suicide any more, he said.

  1. Marco Says:

Why not hold a Referendum and ask the stakeholders if they which to retain or abolish the Executive Presidency.
Truth is that we would have a resounding YES to get rid of the Presidency. Speeches of this nature we see above gives an indication he is nervous of seeking a Referendum.
Had he not abused and exceeded the powers vested in him I’m sure majority voters would like to retain the Executive Presidency.

  2. Lorenzo Says:

Why not hold a referendum and ask the people if they want to SCRAP 13 amendment or not.

Over 80% of the people will say SCRAP 13 amendment.

People NEVER demanded to get rid of EP. ONLY JVP and UNKNOWN political groups demanded it.

“I have not used these powers to betray the country, enter harmful agreements with terrorists, sign death warrants of 600 police officers or ask the police officers to surrender to the LTTE. We used these powers to establish freedom, ensure the country’s security, uplift the economy and protect the country from foreign influences”

    SOME LIES.

    Let me prove my point.

    1. “betray the country” – the JOINT STATEMENT by Monkey-Boon and our dear leader to fully implement 13 amendment and to do reconciliation.

    2. “enter harmful agreements with terrorists” – LTTE/TNA Vigneswaran and LTTE recruitment leader’s wife Ananthi are KINGS in the north. How come?

    3. “sign death warrants of 600 police officers or ask the police officers to surrender to the LTTE” – You got me there. Colonel Karuna who killed them is in your govt.!

    4. “protect the country from foreign influences” – Sajin Vas Gunawardana slapped one of our diplomats in New York! (I don’t sides in this but this is a fact).

AGREE with the rest of the statement.

So dear leader my beloved president you can see some things you say nowadays are not true. And you know it.

We will forgive ALL wrongdoings your MPs have done if you SCRAP 13 amendment. To your credit you have NOT robbed, assaulted or killed. We want you WITHOUT the 13 amendment. TURN the demand to SCRAP EP into SCRAP 13 amendment and see how MOST people will support the latter and forgive the former.
