Why we should vote for the President MAHINDA RAJAPAKSE ?
Posted on January 1st, 2015

By Charles.S.Perera

Some say they would vote for the President Mahinda Rajapakse as there is no alternative.  That however should not be the reason why we should vote for the President Mahinda Rajapakse. Because there is no alternative to  Mahinda Rajapakse, as he is the only man worthy of holding the reins of Executive Presidency.

Others say that the opposition has not been able to present a candidate comparatively above or in level with the profile and the character of the  President.  What ever the critics say about the President Mahinda Rajapakse,  the opposition candidate Maitripala Sirisena has not the personality, charisma, and the intellectual capacity of the President Mahinda Rajapakse.

President Mahinda Rajapakse is a captivating personality.  His smile could disarm the worst of enemies. He speaks sense and of things practically possible to do,  though some of what he has done every one thought was practically impossible . He is capable of handling any problem with extremely calm confidence.  He does not get unnecessarily flustered or confused in the worst of circumstances.  He takes time to think over and finally takes a decision acceptable to wrangling  parties.

He is absolutely clean. Most of what others complain of him are made up or imagined. He is too kind to turn away people who are close to him despite their impossible character that bring disrepute to him. Mervyn or Duminda  he could have easily turned them away  but he tolerates them despite the annoyance they cause to him, as he is a great human being with a  kind heart, who keeps them with him to stop them from  falling into bad ways. That is his nature. Should  these matters cloud his absolute sincerity and political wisdom to do exactly  what is good for the country and the people ?

What  wrongs has the President Mahinda Rajapakse done and what are his faults  if any for the people to vote for another whose abilities have not  been tested, and who is not qualified in any way  to make a difference if elected ?

If there is to be a difference in the election of the rival candidate-Maitripala Sirisena, he should have a political philosophy which is remarkably superior to that of Mahinda Rajapakse. If he has  any political wisdomat all he would not have allowed himself to be manipulated  by political morons like Ranil Wickramasinghe and Chandrika.

President Mahinda Rajapakse has a collective of political parties in UPFA to support him in his election campaign and to carry out the proposals in the  election manifesto- Mahinda Chintanaya after his election.  But can we say the same of Maitripala Sirisena the opposition candidate ? Having had no political vision of his own he had got his election manifesto to be written by Champika Ranawaka.

Strangely Champika now supports the sleazy Rauf Hakim and defends him as a man who has no ulterior motive in joining the opposition in support of Maitripala Sirirsena.  Ranil Wickramasinghe and Chandrika have  their own  motives for dragging in Maitripala Sirisena to be the opposition candidate .  They are in fact helping themselves in pretending to help Maitripala Sirisena to win the election.

Maitripala Sirisena thinks that Tamil National Alliance and Rauf Hakeem are honest politicians who supports him for his good looks” and they have no ulterior motives.  Rauf Hakeem and  Sampanthan of TNA may fool  Maitripala Sirisena, but they cannot fool the  Sri Lanka voters.  They- the voters, will understand that a vote for Maitripala Sirisena who is supported by TNA and Rauf Hakeem of SLMC, is a vote to divide Sri Lanka  amoung the  Tamils of the TNA and   the Muslims of Rauf Hakeem and SLMC.

The way to stop this disaster  is to vote for the President Mahinda Rajapakse.

Mahinda Rajapakse  when he assumed the Presidency in 2005 assured the people that he will never allow Sri Lanka to be divided.  He kept his word and brought the country under one flag and initiated under very difficult circumstance with constant barriers put before him by the TNA, a process of reconciliation of the Communities.  He would have succeeded in that if the  TNA had stopped its disruptive manoeuvres to mislead the Tamil people assuring them the setting up of  a separate Eelam State.

That disruptive element- the TNA is now with the opposition candidate who has signed an agreement to set up an all Tamil Province in the North.  This  would be followed by the claim of Rauf Hakeem for a separate district in the East for the Muslim people.

That is the change  Maitripala Sirisena is proposing  backed by the motley crowd- Ranil, Chandrika, Sarath, Champika and Ratana, behind him.  We can imagine what changes are afoot if the voters make a mistake in their vote casting it to the wrong person in place of the President Mahinda Rajapakse.

Ranil Wickramasinghe and Chandrika had been having political power before President Mahinda Rajapakse.  But they were unable to make any changes then  and how can they  make any changes now after the President Mahinda Rajapakse has  accomplished  making all changes which they had miserably failed to do.

Therefore their slogan,   vote for Maitripala Sirisena for a change”,  is to fool the people as any change they can do now would be to undo every thing that has been done by the President Mahinda Rajapakse and return Sri Lanka back to what it was in 2005.

The right thinking people of Sri Lanka cannot allow that to happen therefore they should without any hesitation give their precious vote to the President Mahinda Rajapakse  for him to continue his making changes” in Sri Lanka which he started in 2005.

When the President Mahinda Rajapakse took over the Presidency in 2005, he inherited a Sri Lanka which had been partly handed over to the terrorist by the Ranil-Chandrika duo.  No one  imagined what the President Mahinda Rajapakse could do with it.  The USA and the West was demanding  a political settlement  which would have been handing over a merged North and East to the terrorists.

A military settlement was hardly imaginable with a demoralised Sri Lanka Armed Force with outdated arms and completely neglected by Ranil-Chandrika duo who had confined the  the Armed Forces to the barracks with the terrorist having an upper hand with a CFA that had been signed by the Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe with the connivance of Chandrika the then President, with the terrorist leader Prabhakaran.

It would have been a daredevil” attempt to face a well equipped  well trained terrorist force with the Sri Lanka Armed Forces in the sorry state that they were found.  But it had to be a Mahinda  Rajapakse to take that challenge without knowing what the outcome w         as going to be.

That is the calibre of the man who is today challenged by a nincompoop who signs agreements with any one without considering the impact those agreements would have on the country with the sole desire of  defeating the President Mahinda Rajapakse  what ever would happen to the country.

President Mahinda Rajapakse has not sought to be the President of Sri Lanka for the prestige that comes with it, nor has he sought to be the President to enjoy the excellence of recognition amoung the people, nor the respect and welcome he gets here and abroad as a ruler.  He has politics in his blood with deep rooted patriotic sentiments. He had  dedicated himself from his youth to politics.

President Mahinda Rajapkse fought for human rights  long before it was hoisted as an arm against  developing countries  by USA and the West.  There were ideas fermenting in him  that he would utilise one day  for the betterment of his beloved country and the people.  It seems to be that  which he sought to do  if he were to be the President of Sri Lanka.

Hence when he became the President in  2005 he knew what he was going to do with the office he had been endowed with.  His Mahinda  Chintanay is a  document which contains the  ideas that had matured during the whole of his political life.  No President of any country in the world had presented a plan of action for the development of his  country  like the Mahinda Chintanaya.  It contains every aspect of development in Sri Lanka.

He knew that a development plan of a country is long  specially when considering the  disastrous  terrorism that had gone on fo thirty long years… without seeing an end to it.  He knew that the Constitution had restricted a Presidents term of Office to two years.  Can one complete  the development process of a country utterly wrecked through terrorism and deprived of wealth, in two presidential terms?

But the President Mahinda Rajapakse planned the first term of his office that began in 2005 to eliminate terrorism, to bring peace and security to the people.  That he succeeded to do.

Then began his second term in 2010. It was to rebuild Sri Lanka which had been devastated by the terrorists.  It was also a period to begin reconciliation of the Communities and allow old wounds to heal.  But this period saw intense activity by the USA and the West supported by the Sri Lanka Opposition led by UNP and the separatist politicians of the TNA to create a continuous campaign against the Government and the President Mahinda Rajapakse interposing violation of human rights as a tool for international agitation.

Despite these barrage of distracting interventionists the President Mahinda Rajapakse kept on developing the country according to the plan of development under Mahinda Chintanaya.   The President Mahinda Rajapaksa with his calm disposition went ahead with his program of extending diplomatic relations in different directions of the Globe.  He never brutalised the people, he was a father to the nation.  He allowed complete press freedom despite their attack against him.  He was an Executive President par excellence, never using his executive powers against the people or his critics.   He never acted as a dictator though his antagonists say so expecting repercussions from he west.

It is during this period that the President Mahinda Rajapakse saw that despite the vast progress the country had made in different fields such as social, economic, and education there was a fall in moral discipline, increase in  criminality , and vociferous claims of corruption.  He saw that all that could not be attended to within the term of office  left to him, and the accomplished politician he is saw that to clean up what remains to be cleaned and take the country forward he should continue in his office for another term.  The Constitution was amended to allow him to contest the Presidential election for a further term in office.

We are today in the midst of the Presidential election campaign. It is very decisive not personally for  the President Mahinda Rajapakse,  but for Sri Lanka that  was taken out of a 30 years of suffering under a ruthless terrorism to undergo an unprecedented transformation  into a middle level income economy,  streamlined  with a network of highways with train services from the south to the north. Sri Lanka now has a sound economy.  The country is supplied with electricity to almost every corner of the country.  The higher and modern IT education , previously restricted to Schools in Colombo, are being extended to every village school.  The towns in Sri Lanka are being beautified , and there is a marked  progress in  every aspect  of life.

The continuation of this unprecedented transformation of Sri Lanka depends on the re-election of the President Mahinda Rajapakse .  Therefore it is imperative that every patriot  cast their vote unhesitatingly to the President Mahinda Rajapakse.

The contrary would certainly be a vote for a change” .  A change which is not for progression,  but for regression to uncertainty, fear , separation of territory, communal discord and possibly another step towards terrorism.

That is why we should  vote for the President Mahinda Rajapakse.

My dear Charles, having been in SL in the past several weeks, my independent opinion is MR is having an uphill battle to keep his presidentship. I fully support your above mentioned reasons. But the fact remains the majority are not supporting MR on this occasion. The corruption, nepotism and the utilisation of the public funds and property by MR for his campaign, the use of the public media and the colossal amount of poor man’s money to fish out of the corrupt frogs, turning a blind eye to thuggery, drugs and massive evasion of customs duty by the prime minister’s son and bicycle thief are being the negative side to MR. I am not surprised if MS becomes the Modi of SL. The unity of the Sinhalese, Tamils and the Muslims is a significant issue to MS including the UNP and all those minor parties. Although I hated the racist Rayappu and the TNA, I am beginning to applause their entering into the mainstream politics.

  2. Susantha Wijesinghe Says:

STANLEY !! MR, win or lose, he will be the next President. He has two more years of Presidency, “”Legally Confirmed””.

The brigands will have to wait, gathering mildew.

  3. helaya Says:

Stanley, TNA did not enter mainstream politics. This the first step for grand scheme of ELAM.

  4. Ancient Sinhalaya Says:

So the bandit queen is the new enforcer! corruption buster!
Maru sira stayed in the government all this time and enjoyed all the perks
and suddenly thought hey I have to fight this corruption! How about these secret pacts with
    the eelamists?

UnPatriotic Party (UNP) put this 13, 13A straight jackets to Sri Lanka. Sinhalese easily forgotten
how they were scared to get out of the house in case they get blown into pieces during bandit queen
and gb ranil era. Only thing they were good at killing Sinhalese youth and burn their bodies in tyres
in town centres to teach them a lesson. Of course there was zero corruption then. Remember the 600
policemen asked to surrender to ltte saints in the east on alugosu premadasa’s orders?
Every week at least 2 or 3 funerals of soldiers in every village. Where were these corruption busters,
die hard patriots then? Double standards! Where are the motorways they built from the money they
    saved from corruption?

A lot of Sri Lankans get paid over Rs 100,000 a month. A lot of money coming
to the country from tourism, from expats, exports, etc. So there are a lot of money in circulation.
So the deals are not done in Rs 1000 or like that. In millions. Sri Lanka is the word’s second best economy.
So when you weigh them up MR is miles better than any of these pretenders. He save the Sinhalese! He save the
country from murderouS prabakaran (Mr to bandit queen)! There is corruption. But now he has realised his mistakes
and will take steps to curb the menace. Sri Lankans should be grateful to the great man. EVER HEARD THE SAYING BETTER THE DEVIL YOU KNOW!

  5. Ancient Sinhalaya Says:

There is one another simple thing to ask from these common opposition!
MR finished off the so called world most ruthless terrorist outfit in 18 MONTHS!
    Simply tigers became poodles!
Bandit queen, GB Ranil, alugosu premadasa, alugosu jr co were so scared to touch!
If MR can do that such a herculean task in that short time, can’t he stop this
    corruption?

GIVE HIM A CHANCE! He put Sri Lanka on the world map. So called powerful countries like
America, UK, Germany, France etc. etc (obviously pushed by the greedy MPs in those countries
for Tamil votes) couldn’t bully him into surrender to the terrorist outfit. Which politician in Sri Lanka’s has this sort
of credentials? The country is rewarding the benefits of elimination of terrorism. Sri Lanka
is one of the best holiday destinations in the world. Sri Lanka has world’s second best economy!
No one is getting blown into pieces by terrorist bombs any more. You can travel the breadth and the width of the country
without the fear of getting killed.
Only bandit queen, GB Ranil and maru sira not agreeing because they can’t get on the gravy train!

I was in Sri Lanka during last presidential election. At that time just like you I thought Fonseka will win. But the reality is that this hologram is artificially created by the press mafia in Sri Lanka. Take for instance, JHU and JVP has only 3% support from the population, but press coverage is asymmetrical and Sri Lankans voters are very much familiar with that.

  7. Samanthi Says:

Since this is going to be his final term as the President of Sri Lanka, I believe HE the President, if elected will achieve some memorable victories for the island nation to remember forever! He has already given assurance that he’ll not take back any defectors no matter what! This is a great statement he never mentioned in the last two occations.

During his first term he spent his full strength to eliminate terrorism from our soil. In his second term, he had to devote most of his time and strength to fight back the co-famous Geneva circus. Hopefully, we’ll get the final outcome of it this coming March and it will die down gradually. After that, I strongly believe he will do some very progressive activities such as resettlement of all Sinhalese who were chased away by Velu from the North. Don’t forget that he is also called “Weeraketiye Sinhaya”, so, he wouldn’t quitely retire without doing some great services to the nation. We’ll all hope for the best!

    Victory for Mother Lanka!

  8. Marco Says:

It is quite evident that we have not many (any) Sri Lankans living in Sri Lanka contributing to this forum as it clearly shows ground realities and views are not shared amongst readers for debate.
Moderator’s comment:- By the way, the Highest number of readers and comments are from Sri Lanka. Lankaweb is Very popular among intellectuals in Sri Lanka.

  9. radha Says:

I would very much like to see MR back at the helm because I feel that he would ensure the long term territorial integrity of the country. He takes no nonsense from western countries or their lackys. Being a southerner, we can rely on him as a true patriot.

Unfortunately, he has let himself down on his method of governance o9ver the last 5-years. Most people that write blogs here could say, that they openly warned MR time and time again over the last 5-years that he has been surrounded by a bunch of good for nothing courtiers, and fair weather political allies.

Those that remained as loyal supporters such as Mervyn, Kudu Duminda, Muththettugama, Lanzo, Pushpakumara etc have turned out to be thugs, gangsters and murderers, and even to this day they show their two fingers to law enforcement agencies in contempt. Most of the writers here warned MR of the dangers of associating them, begging him to get rid of these unsavory characters as they would surely bring his downfall. Even in the most recent cases, people like Sajin Vaas Gunawardana, i.e MR’s trusted hit man had done such a despicable act against the much loved Sri Lankan HC of London, Nonis, he destroyed MR’s credibility as a fair judge. So again MR reaps the results of his timely inaction against SVG.

The loyal senior civil servant Lalith Weerakoon, instead of upholding the infrastructure of government department and helping them to work in an efficient streamlined manner, has allowed the President to let these departments in to rack and ruin. Today, no one in administration takes any decision, no matter how simple it is, without referring to the President. It was Lalith’s duty to advice the President how to improve our civil and admin service, but instead he was just happy to carry on in world tours with the President wherever he went. The efficient administration that we inherited from Suddha’s today lies in ruin and it is no easy task to resurrect it.

Out there, the electorate are asking questions, what happened to our schools and health service, law and order, social and public discipline, government infrastructure, why political thugs are ruling the country side, why the police have no powers to enforce the law of the country, why there is one preferential law to UPFA supporters and MR’s friends and family, and another much severe law for all the others., why heavy tax burdens for the average citizen whereas the UPFA supporters government MPs and ministers and the MR’s extended family live in extreme luxury. These are the issues that are close to the hearts and minds of the electorate and should be addressed.

I do not see these issues are being addressed either here in this website or in UPFA rallys. All I hear and read are the hurling of abuse towards opposition candidates, forgetting that when people use abusive language even their friends would not hang around listening; they would turn their backs.

Like many bloggers here, I too live away from Sri Lanka. Like them, for me too Sri Lanka as a non fragmented Unitary country is important. MR would ensure it, but his future depends not on us, the non voting bloggers, but on the voting public that live in Sri Lanka. It is their needs and questions that MR and his government’s members and supporters must address facing squarely, and not simply hurling abuse at others to denigrate them. Such negative action is counter productive and drives the voters to the opposite camp.

I just hope that those who analyze these websites for measure public opinions and are in influential positions to inform the President convey this type of message so that he steers a more constructive and fruitful election campaign in the remaining 7-days.

  10. Christie Says:

India will not win for the third time. It won with MR but lost because he did not become a puppet of India so India lost. Then India got Srath Fonseka and he lost. Now India got MS through Chandrika and will loose. As usual the some of the middle class Sinhalese may be supporting MS and Chandrika because of their hypes. MS done a Modi dress and another puppet of India through Chndrika. This tile India got Chandrika to make sure MS will not change like MR.

  11. Hiranthe Says:

Stanley, don’t you worry about the ground situation. As NMY said, last time even Fonseka was so sure of his win and planned to do mischievous things after willing..

As Christie rightly said, India will not win this time also. Our intelligence has gathered that RAW chief in SL is supporting MY3 gang and the GOSL complained to India. So they had to transfer the guy… It shows Indian hand behind My3

Our country is protected by some unseen spiritual force.. we can say some deities are looking after it. Something will happen even at the last moment … like a slip of a tongue by the unholy alliance which will change the situation completely. It happened earlier and it will happen this time too. Any unholy party involved in thought and act of detrimental to the wellbeing of Mother Lanka will make a blunder at the right moment..

  12. janakic Says:

    Dear Stanley Perera
Mahinda will win despite the gimmicks of the opposition. Please don’t judge Mahinda on the alleged excessive campaign. Please be mindful of what he had achieved during his short term of 10 years. Other refinements can be made during his 3rd term as governance would is his next project. We have to consider his achievements at the end of the next term.

  13. Dilrook Says:

At least in this 11th hour Mahinda should take over the campaign work and not let Namal make decisions. It was Mahinda who steered the party to victory, not Basil or Namal. It is a wise move to keep Basil away but Namal runs the show. He is inexperienced and doesn’t appeal to the masses. Just three more days and campaigning will be over. Party supporters should not be allowed to cause violence.

  14. stanley perera Says:

I personally support what charles has stated. I also admire the successful extermination of the terrorist LTTE. The full credit must be given to MR,GR and SF. I expressed the feeling of the masses and not my personal view. We must keep in mind that whoever wins we are are the losers. One good thing here is Sinhalese, Muslims and Tamils are united with MS. Atlas on this issue for the time being at least minorities are supporting one candidate. I do not know how the people react to that. My personal point of view is that is a good sign instead of boycotting the election altogether.

  15. Raj Says:

Where is Pundit Lorence. He will have an opinion. He is an LTTE guy who knew exactly what their plan is well in advance.

  16. Independent Says:

    Raj,
Lorenzo the LTTE agent is doing house to house campaign for the President in Jaffna.

  17. Independent Says:

    Dilrook,
Campaigns alone cannot win elections. Those days are over. People in Sri Lanka have eyes, ears and brains.

  18. NeelaMahaYoda Says:

I think Lorenzo is now busy with coordinating TNA/LTTE support for Sirisena in Jaffna. We all know that Lorenzo is a LTTE mole assigned by the LTTE diaspora to poison Sinhala Buddhists opinion among readers of Lankaweb. At the moment we don’t need his opinion on presidential election.

  19. Susantha Wijesinghe Says:

SIMPLY WRONG. Lorenzo is a decent guy. He is a tamil, but has spoken mostly for the Sinhalese Buddhists.

  20. Ancient Sinhalaya Says:

I have a feeling maru sira going to realise that he is taking the country towards a very
dangerous road. Also he is going to be a puppet of bandit queen and
gb ranil and pulls out of the race. This will make him real patriot!
Hope this will happen rather than divide the country start a war again.
People suffered for 30 years. You don’t want to go down that road again!

Thy children flock today to vote,
    To preserve thy immortal flame!

The Lion Flag flutters proudly aloft,
To remind us this freedom’s day!
Our duty to keep thee, safe and strong,
    As our forefathers did yesterday!

A Mahinda Rajapaksa by deed and word,
Strode forth boldly to eternal fame!
To lead his people to a safer world,
When all others retreated in shame!

  22. Ananda-USA Says:

Agree with Susantha: ” Lorenzo is a decent guy.”

TRUE, but in this instance Lorenzo was ABSOLUTELY WRONG and Destructive to the Patriotitic Cause!

They say that the Path to Hell is Paved with Good Intentions; so was Lorenzos!

If Palwatte Gamaralage Maithripala Yapa Sirisena is ELECTED and begins to DISMANTLE Sri Lanka’s defenses and GUT her Social Cohesion …. we will all live to RUE THIS DAY in 2015, just as we WEEP for that DAY OF INFAMY when Sri Lanka lost her SOVEREIGN CROWN, 200 years ago in 1815!

Fortunately, there is NO POSSIBILITY that Palwatte Gamaralage Maithripala Yapa Sirisena will win.

But yet, his DESHA-DROHI ACTS have GRIEVOUSLY WEAKENED Sri Lanka and laid Mother Lanka open to ATTACK by her enemies, both local and foreign.

Aiyooo Sirisenaaaa….What have you done to yourself and to our beloved Motherland!

Aiyooooo Sirisenaaa … Ganda dravya angey gaagaththa neda??
