Is it not fair to suspect that President Sirisena will be under enormous pressure and obligation when he meets the Indian counterpart at the forthcoming bilateral talks.

These talks are coming on in the wake of controversy over the Indian spy agency RAW’s alleged role in the recent Sri Lankan presidential election. It was reported RAW was instrumental in persuading President Sirisena to defect and Ranil Wickremasinghe to stand aside as the presidential candidate. If true one can understand the enormity of gratitude the President will feel towards him at the talks.

Do not forget President Sirisena wore a Modi style jacket at the beginning of his campaign.

He is genuine and modest but those are not the qualities one would look from a leader who has to show his grit and determination against the bargains that India is pressing for some time now.

The fact that India is arranging hurriedly both visits to fall within the hundred day programme shows how keen it is to get its pound of flesh sooner than later.

This will not augur well for the nation when their President feels indebted to his opposite number at these very crucial talks.

The nation will hold its breath to learn what the President will agree to at these talks.
