The Eelam Heist: India and Christian West compete to divide Sri Lanka

The name of the game is divide and rule, self-determination and balkanization all hallmarks of what India cannot ignore despite its efforts to avert or delay the inevitable. Importing Eelam from India to Sri Lanka managed to avert balkanization of India by 30 years, a period used by India to subtly form the foundation for Indian influence over Sri Lanka’s North which was immediately countered by foot soldiers in the form of Christian NGOs that took over LTTE’s vision and mission. Diplomatic jargon apart both India and the Christian West are hounding the hare manipulating the present weak government with leaders that follow appeasement and surrender mentality in order for them to secure their objectives. The favour returned has nothing to do with securing the national sovereignty of Sri Lanka but to ensure they remain in power even at the cost of a divided nation.
The colonial invaders that arrived in the early 16th century within no time discovered that the Sinhala Buddhists were a bloody headache and devised to use the minorities and break up the majority. With time that resulted in creating a minority bloc ready to follow white Christian orders while the Sinhala Buddhists died defending the nation. Over time many of the indentured labor were tapped from among the Tamils while Muslims were used as messengers and eaves droppers as the British found them easier to work with. They absorbed them into their military that came to be known as sepoys for being subservient to the whites. Little has changed since. India where millions of Indians were systematically killed remains very much under the thumb of their one-time rulers though a handful of proud Hindus fight in vain to preserve and protect a cultural heritage and one of the world’s oldest civilization.
India’s control over Eelam
With that background knowledge there is also the realization that India as a nation was patched together by the British tying together various princely kingdoms and independent territories. This argument is the basis with which the Tamils sought self-determination from ‘patched’ India.
Tamils that call for a Homeland in Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Canada all trace their origins to Tamil Nadu where 72million of the world’s 76million Tamils live in a state that is 99% Tamil, a state that is named after Tamils and a state where Tamil is the official language. All the requirements for self-determination are already in place in Tamil Nadu.
Origins of Eelam traces back to early 1920 when the Justice Party brought a resolution to live separate from Brahmin-controlled India alleging that Brahmins were destroying Dravidian civilization. The initial Dravida Nadu concept included Tamil speaking states (Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu). This request was refused by the British delegation (Cripps Mission) in 1942 though legally Tamil Nadu can seek self-determination as the option was not offered to Tamil Nadu at independence though a request was made.
Therefore the present genocide resolutions, protests, separatist calls etc stem from that initial Dravida Nadu Secession Day held in 1947 to inspire the 1949 formation of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in India alongside the Federal Party (Illankai Tamil Arasu Katchchi) by Chelvanayagam in Sri Lanka. The links are obvious. The dilemma for Tamil Hindus is that India does not wish to shed its Hindi-Hindustani prominence while Sri Lanka insists the same for Sinhala Buddhists.
After 1950s the Dravida Nadu concept was replaced with Tamil Nadu for Tamils. Coincidentally the same year (1956) that Sri Lanka introduced Sinhala Only Act, India introduced the States Reorganization Act along linguistic lines. India imported India’s ailment to Sri Lanka by training Tamil youth to start a guerrilla warfare which eventually led to 30 years of terrorism.
India’s Central Government is well aware that balkanization of India is very much under way. India’s reliance on the arthashastra impedes India from collaborating with Sri Lanka and instead India has shown preference for using covert means to Indianize Sri Lanka’s North in a bid to ensure any division of Sri Lanka will secure Indian interest vis a vis sufficient Indian ‘citizens’ birthed in Sri Lanka’s North. Thus, the ‘refugees’ presently being quoted as ‘Sri Lankan’ may not be our own! It is also important that we realize India’s Centre is well in control of theatrics of Tamil Nadu state and that the State does not control the Centre to understand the pressure points India uses politically and socially against Sri Lanka. The links established culturally, through the new Indian mission in the North, illegal arrivals and the on ground covert activities of RAW has led to Sri Lanka’s Tamil Hindus falling prey to believing India as their savior when eventually India cares not about the Sri Lankan Tamil Hindus except to be well in control of a possible foundation outlet to kickstart the balkanization of India.
The covert influences India exerts in a long term bid to mentally align the North to India in preference to wanting to remain part of Sri Lanka has been through the satellite tv channel network, the film mania and via India influenced Tamil publications in print and electronic forms.
India is obviously looking after its own political and geo political interest caring not a hoot about Sri Lankan Tamil Hindus. Another factor Sri Lankan Tamils cannot ignore is that India’s HINDI rule will never allow Tamil factor to dominate. Therefore, even if Sri Lanka’s North comes under the guardianship of India and away from Sri Lanka, it would be HINDI dominated governance that will rule. It is for Sri Lanka’s Tamils to decide if Hindi dominated India or Sinhala dominated Sri Lanka is a better choice to live with.
It suited India to allow Sri Lanka to remain destabalized, for so long as terror existed India was safe from balkanization efforts. LTTE was linked to the Tamil Nadu Liberation Army and the Naxals. Counter terrorism efforts were all designed to keep terrorism at controllable levels and at negotiation/ceasefire stage – in short no solution was the best solution. It’s a pity though that over 2000 Indian men from its peace keeping force had to lay down their lives as a result of India-created terrorists! The 13th amendment to Sri Lanka’s constitution is also a factor to facilitate the delinking of both North and East from Sri Lanka and annexing it to India if not legally through a very calculated colonization program now well in place. With no proper and qualified national-minded policy makers and advisors all of Sri Lanka’s Governments have erred in not getting rid of 13th amendment to secure the sovereignty of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan Tamil Hindus must ask themselves is their anger against the Sinhalese Buddhists such that they would prefer to live under Hindi rule after dividing Sri Lanka.
Christian West hijacking Eelam
If India clandestinely imported eelam to Sri Lanka realizing that Tamil Nadu would be a factor in the quest to balkanize India, it should come as no surprise that the West would use other tactics to counter this. Yesteryears CIA is today replaced with foreign-government funded organizations majority of which are Christian/Catholic camouflaged as NGOs and registered to do humanitarian work. These entities have proved far more successful in India than they have in Sri Lanka questioning how far longer the Hindi dominance of India can actually survive. If Sri Lanka and India were to be turned into another South Korea that would become a success story for the Vatican objective of harnessing souls of Asia.
We can recall the ship Mercy Mission to the Vanni sponsored by an organization called ‘Act Now’ a pro-LTTE Christian organization bringing relief that was forced to be accepted by the Sri Lankan government because of India.
When the Church takes no action against Fathers functioning as leaders of banned terrorist movements, when churches are allowed to be used by LTTE cadres, when church leaders bless LTTE dead as martyrs, when the nations and organizations that have pushed and pulled for ceasefires to enable LTTE breathing space to fight another day we cannot be naïve not to notice the connections.
Church clergy openly supporting LTTE:
– Frs. Singarayer, Diyogupillai, Prof. (Fr.) Joseph Chandrakanthan, from the Department of Theology at the University of Toronto, a former President of the University of Jaffna Teacher’s Association
– Father Jagat Gasper Raj, close to DMK leadership in India
– Fr. SJ Emmanuel, former Vicar-General of Jaffna, currently residing in Germany. He is on record saying he is first a Tamil and then a Christian. He called Prabhakaran ‘Jesus Christ’, the LTTE ‘soldiers of Christ’, the suicide bombers ‘martyrs of the Catholic Church’ to whom the Church provided a Catholic burial, and proclaimed himself as ‘the Moses’ who would lead the Tamil nation from the bondage of Sinhalese-Buddhists to the land chosen for them by God: Eelam. He leads the Global Tamil Forum.
– S Jebanesan, Bishop of the Church of South India (CSI), who said he was working on a theology for Tamils, that is, excluding Sinhala Christians!
– Prof. S Chandrakanthan, attached to the Theology Department, Toronto University, Canada
– Rev. Dick Wootton of Uniting Church, Melbourne, Australia
– Bishop Kenneth Fernando of the Anglican Church, visited Prabhakaran with Charles Abeysekera and Jayadeva Uyangoda and announced, Prabhakaran is humane” shocking all
– Rev Sr. Mary Barbara, Dr Anita Nesiah, M. Rajasigham, Joe William and T. Jayasingham of the National Peace Council
– Rajappu Joseph, Bishop of Mannar, declared open the ‘Embassy of the Tamil Eelam’, the Eelam House in London.
The Mylapore Diocese works closely with the former Tamil Nadu chief Minister while the CSI Church of South India keeps ties with the present Chief Minister. Virtually the entire Tamil clergy of India supported the LTTE, as did the Sinhala Catholic and Christian clergy and influential evangelical elites.
LTTE Voice of Tigers tied up with Radio Veritas, a Catholic broadcasting station run by the Asian Catholic Bishops Conference based in The Philippines. The Tamil Service of the Radio Veritas is run by the Tamil Catholics of Tamil Nadu. Voice of Tigers had a coordinating office” inside St. Sebastian’s Church in Mallavi, Wanni; the office was opened by the pro-LTTE Bishop of Mannar Fr. Rayappu Joseph. He played a key role in getting the army out of the Madhu Church premises (in Mannar) while allowing LTTE to operate from inside the Church!
The National Christian Council of SL and affiliates (SL Baptist Sangamaya, Christian Reformed Church of SL, Diocese of Kurunegala of the Church of Ceylon, Diocese of Colombo of the Church of Ceylon, Methodist Church, Sri Lanka, Presbyterian Church, Jaffna Diocese of the Church of South India, The Salvation Army, YWCA of Sri Lanka, YMCA of Sri Lanka, Ceylon Bible Society, Christian Literature Society, Students Christian Movement, Commission for Justice and Peace) have been working to balkanize Sri Lanka and colluded with LTTE in tarnishing the image of the country. This is proven by the World Council of Churches promoting the concept of traditional homeland theory in 1994 at the UNHRC in Geneva.
National Peace Council was formed in 1995 with the backing of NCCSL donors, including Catholic Agency for Overseas Development, NORAD, SLIDA and a number of EU, German donor organizations.
NCCSL and supporters take great pains to deny that Sinhala Buddhists played a role in building the Sri Lankan nation. Favorite topics include state colonization”, Tamil homeland” ethnic war”, Sinhala Buddhist chauvinism”, genocide of Tamils” etc. They have never referred to LTTE as a terrorist organization and rarely mention its atrocities. Their reports and papers end up being quoted by the West. The concept of self-determination” is being pushed by these Church forces to facilitate creation of a Church-sponsored state.
Numerous times news have reported of Christian NGOs transporting arms and LTTE cadres and even supplying them equipment and then claiming these were stolen. Funds have also been disbursed surreptitiously while it is alleged that on the pretext of foreign study tours and training LTTE cadres were allowed to flee to Western nations to claim ‘refugee status.
Sri Lanka eelam lobbyists
- Can seek Eelam with the hidden intention of using the eelam theme to advance their interests locally and internationally – refugee status/green card/ advancing political careers / gaining foreign employment etc
- Will eventually have to give up eelam to be under temporary control by India (until India is balkanized) the media projections of India ‘shielding’ Sri Lanka is simply to bring Sri Lanka under India’s orbit of influence and has nothing to do with any concern for Sri Lanka’s welfare whatsoever.
Prefer to allow West to use as its Christian base in South Asia to monitor and control the seas going West-East and East-West to wrest religious expansionism combined with territory take over no different to colonial expansion. Tamil Christian nation is not going to have any place for the majority Hindus unless they convert!
Either way eelam project stakeholders will become puppets and will find out too late they have been fooled and lost all that they had because of their greed to want a little more than what they had been given.
Essentially what is important to take serious note is that Eelam is not meant for Sri Lankan Tamils or Sri Lankan Hindus.

Tamil Elam will be part of Endia. Tamil Nadu is HAPPY to be part of Endia.
That way Tamils in SL can have the best of Endia too.
Tamil Elam shall be a HINDU country. The TE flag has a tiger with HINDU ASH on its forehead. So TE will be a HINDU country.
Even Kasippu Joseph Goebbels and Jaffna bishop Saundaralingam wear HINDU POTTU on their forehead!!! They too are HINDUS underneath. VP was a HINDU. MANY photos are there he doing HINDU rituals but NONE for any other religion.

Govt Statements on Army Camps Triggered Genocide Resolution

Feb 28 (NIE) COLOMBO- Northern Province Chief Minister C.V.Wignewaran has attributed the Northern Provincial Council’s resolution on an “on-going genocide against Tamils in Sri Lanka” to Central government ministers’ saying that not a single army camp will be removed from the province.
Addressing a meeting on the cooperative movement attended by Central Ministers Gamini Jayawickrema Perera and D.M.Swaminathan in Jaffna on Saturday, Wigneswaran said that recent public pronouncements that not even a single army camp will be withdrawn from the province could have been avoided. These statements had resulted in the NPC passing a resolution on genocide, he said.
“Please remember we feel very strongly against the continued stay of the armed forces in our areas. Until they are removed, except from areas of strategic importance, we will feel threatened,” Wigneswaran said.
He argued that the armed forces would only need 1000 of the 6500 acres appropriated from farmers to protect the Palaly airbase and the Kankesanthurai harbor since the end of Eelam War IV in 2009. The rest of the 5500 acres of fertile land could be handed over to the original owners who have deeds for them, the Chief Minister said.
He charged that the army is cultivating the peoples’ lands and is using up water which is a scarce commodity in Jaffna peninsula. It is polluting the area and causing fear among the people, he added.
Drawing attention to the fact that no government in Colombo, including the present one, has addressed the Tamils’ political problem, Wigneswaran said that it is essential to address it adequately ” so that none would put us back into the sea of turmoil and despair again.”

Great article; I would like to add a few issues pertaining to the present
Since the end of the war in 2009, Jaffna has received more international heads of state, more international organization, and more Indian politicians THAN ANY OTHER PART OF SRI LANKA OUTSIDE OF COLOMBO
If Pakistan’s Prime Minister visited India via New Delhi and then made a direct stop in Kashmir. INDIA WOULD NOT STAND FOR THAT.
If China’s Prime Minister visited India and then made a direct stop in the disputed region of Arunachal Pradesh INDIA WOULD NOT ONLY BE LIVID BUT RELATIONS BETWEEN INDIA AND CHINA WILL HIT AN ALL TIME LOW.
If Pakistan’s Prime Minister visited China via Beijing and immediately flew to the only Chinese Muslim province of Xingjiang CHINA WOULD BE FURIOUS. SHE WOULD TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION AGAINST PAKISTAN.
There are plenty of similar examples WHICH A NATION WILL NOT TOLERATE. Yet in Sri Lanka heads of other nations do this with impunity against the sentiments of Colombo and the Singhalese Buddhists. They do this because they can do it and get away with it.
Soon Modi of India plans to visit Sri Lanka stopping first in Colombo and second in Jaffna, but nowhere else. NOT IN THE SINGHALESE HEARTLAND OF GALLE OR THAT OF KANDY BUT JAFFNA

Shenali you are right – Eelam is not for Lanka Tamils or Hindus !
Protect the country INTERNALLY by :
(1) Remove the 13-A.
(2) Remove Tamil as a National/Official language.
Or else illegal migration from Tamil Nadu will continue into Lanka. Even P’karan had said that one third of the LTTE army was from Tamil Nadu.
Local labor (any ethnicity) can do the tea plucking with tea plucking machines as done in India, S. Africa, China & Japan.

Mod would not dare go to Pakistan and first make his visit to Islamabad and his 2nd visit to AZAD KASHMIR OR BALUCHISTAN HE WOULD NOT DARE DO THAT.
Nor would Modi ever think of going to Beijing (China) and then directly going to the MUSLIM PROVINCE OF XINGJIANG.

Bernard Wijeyasingha brings a very pertinent issue. It highlights what is important to these visitors. Their geopolitical interests in the island align with Tamils more than others. The west (including Japan) and India in particular always wanted to divide the island for their geopolitical needs. On a side matter, Kandy and Galle too are being increasingly ‘Tamilised’.
There is another key issue here. Tamils in Sri Lanka led by TNA, ITAK, etc. use the Tamil Elam card to extort as many favours as they can. In fact, they don’t wish to live in “Tamil Eelam”. For rich Tamils, Tamil Eelam demand is just a red herring for them to lead a comfortable life in Colombo (not “Tamil Eelam”) and keep benefitting from disproportionate attention every government since 1958 pays to them. The east is heavily under-developed compared to Colombo and Jaffna is too harsh for most rich Tamils to live. The ultimate goal of Tamil Eelamists is Colombo and the Western Province, not the north-east.
Sinhalas have been made to believe that Tamil separatists are only after the north and the east which resulted in increased Tamilisation of other parts, capture of the economy, educational institutions/opportunities, top government positions, etc. by Tamils. At this rate soon their demand will turn from Tamil Eelam to entire Eelam.
Understanding this leads to proper action to stop Tamil Eelamists. It helps to see the woods not just the individual trees. Preventing further Tamilisation of the provinces outside the north and the east should be Sri Lanka’s top priority. The safest way to do it is to remove Tamil as an official and national language and give it the status of a regional language only in the north and the east.
Jaffna and the Tamil Eelam camp in the island will not survive if they are denied sustenence (as Tamil Eelamists) in Colombo and other economic nerve centres. Jaffna has not many industries to sustain this campaign and the Tamil diaspora will not be able to sustain it for too long as oversees born Tamils integrate into their societies very fast.

This is not a small matter. It was a big monster of which MR was backing our troops to cut the head off… That is why they are after his blood. If it is between only Tamils and Sinhalese, no one in the West or India will bother. The West cannot see the difference in Sinhalese and Tamils.. Both are dirty black bastards in the eyes of Westerners.
This anti Buddhist SL mentality is evident everywhere. See the Cricket World Cup… The Fox sports never talked about 1996 world cup. But they talk about Cricketing Legends of other games. CricInfo newsletters will not have SL winning headlines. When SL beat Bangladesh, the following day head line was about Afgan / Scotland match. When SL beat England, the following day headline was on Pakistan / Zimbabwe match. I was watching the coverage and after SL beats England, the specialist commentator in Brian Lara told that England had a bad day and their bowlers were not showing their potential. Then the host asked him whether he will not say SL did well in their batting.. Then Lara told “no, unless they win against a good side like Australia… and today England bowlers did badly… “
They are not happy since our boy Sangakkara beats all their records. Adam Gilcrist had told that SL will not even reach the Super 8 stage I heard.
Coming back to the Monster story, that monster is not dead. Only the head was cut off by our war heroes… Now the head is growing again with stronger arms and tentacles. I see no way of countering it unless some divine help!!
MR cannot come back. He is the only leader who can do it. But by trying to bring My3 as the Executive PM candidate from SLFP (Rajitha has quoted.. this may be the RAW or CIA advice), MR cannot come as the SLFP candidate. A new party will not help unless he declares getting rid of 13A. Then the guys who lose jobs at grass root SLFP support base canbe helpful in becoming MR’s local organisers.
If not, at spiritual level, we should organise large scale bodhi puja’s and religious events to bring back the old values and fear in people to do wrong things and spread metta to the whole world. That power of metta will deal with the devils who will eventually surrender. All the deities who look after Mother Lanka will come to our rescue!!

Shenali, while thanking for your valuable article, let me add a short note to this. Smashing the strength and dividing the unity of the SLFP is being underway. Majority of the politicians in the Sinhala South, also to be blamed of being short sighted as for some the eligibility for state pension plan is much more important than protecting the territorial integrity of Sri Lanka. These are people can be bought for the detrimental plot orchestrated by sinister forces ..

Dilrook: You point out the “Tamilization” of Galle, Colombo or Kandy. The number of Tamils may increase but the mindset is that they are in a Singhalese cultural center. It is the same kind of mindset the Sri Lankan Tamils are using to call traditionally Tamil dominated areas as “Tamil Homelands”.
Keeping that in mind, another issue that must be brought to this new government is the repatriation of Singhalese to Tamil areas. the same areas they were driven out during the war. It has to go much further than that. The renaissance of Buddhism in these areas. From Jaffna, the central province to the Eastern province has had a rich long Buddhist history. Time to reclaim it NOW. I have seen too many Hindu temples in Colombo. I want to see as many Buddhist temples across Sri Lanka. Buddhist monasteries across Sri Lanka. THAT is how a culture reclaims her lost land.

-Be it Hindus claiming places in the city of Ayodhya, the Somnath temple in Gujrarat to global Hinduism
-be it ISIS expanding Sunni Islam across the Middle East. one has to get AGGRESSIVE AGAINST OPPOSING FORCES.
One more issue of “Tamils not living in their “Eelam”. the Tragedy of the new effort by the global Tamils to still pursue Eelam is that THEY HAVE NO INTENTION OF LEAVING THE COMFORT OF THEIR NEW FOUND HOMES TO COME BACK TO A NATION CALLED “EELAM”.
They will support it as long as it is for others. Once the Kandyan areas are occupied in sufficient numbers by the Tamils -Portuguese and Dutch times Tamils from the North and East and British times Tamils from the estates there will be a different narrative.
They will say that two hundred years ago there was a Tamil Kingdom in Kandy and its last King was Kannasamy. They are now occupying this historical land. Just as it is done in the areas they occupy in the North, East and Hill Country this too will happen.
Narrative changes are being worked out in advance by the fake Tamil Historian. Their “research papers” get lodged in libraries the world over, get quoted in encyclopaedias and other important vehicles of knowledge to be “discovered” by future fake historians to be repeated ad-nauseum as historical fact.

The coverage and the commentaries of the Cricket World Cup games have not always been good but to suggest that they also are affected by an “anti Buddhist SL mentality” bias, would seem to be far- fetched.
The SL/Bangladesh and Afghanistan/Scotland games were played on the same day, and even the most parochial of SL fans would agree that the result of the latter game was the more newsworthy, for at least two reasons; this is the first time that Afghanistan is in the competition, and for the team to have recovered from a perilous 7/97 while chasing 211, and go on to win the game was an excellent achievement.
Regarding SL’s victory over England, it is not easy to chase down 309 and win with only one wicket down – against any opposition. Brian Lara’s reported post match comments certainly detract from SL’s splendid effort. But I don’t believe his remarks were deliberately biased against SL, just that they were not very smart. Lara’s comment that “England had a bad day and their bowlers were not showing their potential” suggests this loss was a ‘one off’ and that England is in fact a GOOD team. But his later comment that SL needs to prove itself against “a GOOD side like Australia” would imply that England isn’t a GOOD team, after all ! He can’t have it both ways.
What he was trying to say I suppose is that the real test is against a really strong team. And that is a fair comment. The SL team would readily agree that Australia will pose a greater challenge than the hapless England team did; SL’s victory over England was nevertheless a fine win.
The fact that England has been ‘having bad days’ throughout this tournament seems to have escaped Lara’s notice. And he would also know that teams usually have bad days and the bowlers fail to perform well, when the opposition gets the better of you.
Brian Lara was a great batsman but we need to appreciate that great players don’t necessarily make great – or even, good – commentators. Some are in fact pretty hopeless. How often do we find them struggling for the right words and seeking refuge in inane clichés like “not performing to their potential” and “much as they would have liked” and so on?
As for Gilchrist’s reported remarks, well, time will tell if he is right or not.

Sri Lanka is a nation known for our written history. In that light why not construct monuments (especially bronze or stone statues) in places such as
-where Prince Vijaya Singha landed in Sri Lanka and called her “Thambapani”
-In Mihintale comemorating the arrival of Mahindra and Sanghamitta who met King Devanampiyattissa
-In Thambapani where King Vattagamini had the Tipitaka put into writing
-the site where the Tamil King Elara was defeated and chased out of Sri Lanka
THERE ARE LITERALLY DOZENS OF SUCH EVENTS THAT COMEMORATE THE HISTORY OF THE SINGHALESE BUDDHIST CULTURE. IT IS HISTORICAL AND NOT BASED ON JUST RELIGION.
IT HAS BEEN DONE ACROSS THE WORLD TO CLAIM A TERRITORY BY A HISTORICAL ACT.
IT IS LONG OVERDUE FOR SUCH MONUMENTS ACROSS SRI LANKA.

to label an area that is Tamil dominated with a placard saying so will NOT embarrass the Tamils but will be used as some legal precedence that “even the Singhalese nationalists acknowledge that these areas are Tamil. (not Tamil dominated but simply “Tamil”). then you have given them on a silver platter what they dare not do.
There a two reasons to create monuments across Sri Lanka (maybe more as I write) that support the Singhalese Buddhist heritage.
-Like in the US or Europe or even India it makes a statement to the nation and the world what is proud for the majority and for the culture that defined Sri Lanka (In Italy there is a massive statue of Columbus with his hand pointing West. it is an eternal reminder that the ‘age of discovery” was led by Italians who not only discovered the New world but gave the new world her name “America” or the “American continent” named after another Italian ”

First Issue
In Germany is a massive statue of a Viking. In the US is the statue of Liberty (made and given by France) and Mount Rushmore with 4 Presidents carved into the rock cliff., to the monuments of Washington D.C. commemorating the US role around the world: monuments to all the wars in which US soldiers died. Monument to 9/11.
In India are numerous statues of her famous historians such as the Maratha leader Shivaji, the Mahatma, Tagore, the reconstruction of Nalanda, the massive Stupa in Mumbai copied from Myannmar
In Iraq Saddam Hussein rebuilt the city of Babylon as a historical marker of the heritage of that nation who is home to Mesopotamia and Sumeria including Babylon. None are religions. all are historical.
Second issue
These monuments will be built across Sri Lanka regardless of who lives there, be it Singhalese or Tamil. it then becomes the overwhelming heritage of all who call themselves Sri Lankan. If they are defaced then they become the proverbial “canary in the cage” where who did this becomes an issue. to deface the statue of Liberty would arouse the entire US against anyone or any community linked to that act.
Third Issue”
Nation building to the people and to the world. Nothing states more eloquently than a picture or monument.
Fourth Issue:
It delineates what can be built and what cannot be built. those wanting to praise Prabhakaran or the Chola invasions would face the wrath of the nation who now has a heritage of historical monuments in Singhalese and Tamil areas.

Susantha Wijesinghe: I had some time to think about what I just wrote. There is yet another issue.
Earlier I read in the LW of an article with a proposed letter to Mahinda Rajapakse of what the Singhalese Nationalists expect from him if he decides to return to power. One of them being to recognize Sri Lanka as a Buddhist nation. make Buddhism the law of the land. The second being the removal of the imposition of Tamil as an official language on the majority.
I realized that it would be easier to get any potential leader to follow this advice if they are leading a nation now partly defined by her historical monuments. they effectively negate the concept of Secularism, the lop sided belief that minorities are more important than the majority and they will be reminded of the powerful Singhalese Buddhist history no matter what part of Sri Lanka they travel. it would then be easier to achieve an almost unachievable goal. I have realized the importance of SYMBOLS. they are as powerful as a religious icon such as the Buddha or the national flag. One would even say it is yet another “leg” that supports the rebirth of a Buddhist Singhalese based Sri Lanka.
