Kafkaesque Politics in Sri Lanka
Posted on March 4th, 2015

R Chandrasoma

Let us begin with a story of Bees and Wasps. A flourishing colony of Bees is sometimes ‘captured’ by an invasive group from another colony. The events are roughly as follows – the Queen of the invaded colony is killed and replaced by a Virgin fancied by the aliens.

Next the ‘battle force’ of the invaded colony is made compliant by certain ‘ectohormones’ released by the invaders. The invaders take charge of the colony and henceforth direct its affairs in consonance with their aims and wishes.

This brief history history serves as a model for the unfolding Kafkaesqe politics in Sri Lanka.  Nobody was killed, of course, but the Triumphant Leader of a flourishing land found himself suddenly outcast and condemned.

The ‘invaders’ had a choice based not on political principles but on expediency and compliance – as to who replaced the former Boss, A ‘Hamlet’ was found and anointed leader amidst the hallelujahs of a partisan crowd.

The astonishing aspect of this strange ‘chapter’ in politics is the ease with which it was done – the overthrow of an esteemed leader and the cowing of his once-stalwart colleagues in Parliament.

The received story is that ‘corruption’ destroyed the man and his following.

There is a paradox here – the so-called corrupt leader was removed by maneuverings that reeked of intrigue and corruption. We must add the weight historical evidence – that honest political leaders rarely survive while abuse and corruption are  the  more secure foot-holds in climbing Mount Politics.

  2. Fran Diaz Says:

Sri Lanka has not known true Democracy or true Independence. There has always been some interference from some group or some country, always. Same for India ?
After WW II, there were a few years when both countries were left alone.

  3. Christie Says:

Namaste: How many Sinhalese are living in India? More than 3 million Indians in the island, how do you say it is the same for both India and us. These statements are brainwashing by Indian imperialists. Jai Hind

  4. Fran Diaz Says:

    Dear Christie,

I appreciate your frustration with India. I have had to tussel with my thoughts sometimes to come to terms and understand India’s actions that have been inimical to Lanka.

We both know that India was under British rule for over nearly two centuries, same as Lanka. At present, both countries are a part of the Commonwealth. The Congress party of India is more west-oriented same as the UNP of Lanka. Whenever Lanka appeared to be less west led, the Congress party was either aggressively or subtely against Lanka. This has been proven many times e.g. training of LTTE in Tamil Nadu, parippu drop, IPKF arrival in Lanka, dud communication equipment sold to Lanka, and more.
Whilst both countries were under the British, the local leaders of both countries were of one mind set i.e. to get Independence. After Independence, the political parties that were born were either pro-west bloc or pro-local or pro-eastern bloc.

In my opinion, it is time that both countries, after long years of suffering, truly come to pro-local governance. That would be progress indeed and all politcal parties in both countries can participate in such progress.

Superb analogy by R. Chandrasoma of the events in Sri Lanka and the maneuverings to usurp power. Indeed the “ECTOHORMONES” would have been provided by the external agencies that were part of the regime change plot.
But all the best laid plans of mice and men and indeed wasps and bees do not always succeed in the way they are supposed to proceed….least of all in Human societies.
