This weekend I happened to watch another extraordinary Hindi movie called Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” (Run Milkha Run). A biopic directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, is based on a real life story of a former track and field sprinter Milkha Singh who was born in Imperial India before the partition, won several Gold medals for his motherland. A real spectacle about the hard work, dedication and determination in achieving a set life target. This film grossed at 6th highest place in 2013 in India.

The story is about a teenager who selected army as his carrier and the track as is his arena of achievements. Failures at Melbourne (1956) and Rome (1960) Olympics gave a birth to a new hero. The story also provides some sinister incidents of the protagonist’s childhood life during the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947. A must watch movie but very patiently.

The main actor Farhan Akhtar appears credited with lot of acting and directing in his early career but he does not stand par with other commercially successful Indian actors. He provides a highly respectable and powerful performance throughout the whole movie. Appearance of Sonam Kapoor lights up already electric screen.

This film makes me think of our film industry in Sri Lanka. When most of our film directors chase up finances through NGO organisations, they were made to stick with terms & conditions of such organisations where destroying of our cultural values and way of life are general norms hidden in the small print. In the same token India is so gutsy in keeping its tradition and culture still intact in every aspect of their entertainment and day to day life.

  1. Christie Says:

Namaste: Look man live in Sydney, eat biriyani in Indian dirty joints, buy all things from Tamil groceries and watch Hindi films. Jai Hind

  2. Independent Says:

Indian food like Biriyani, Thosai , Wadai , Indiappam soooo good. Rarely some of their films are also good. This must be one of those. So, we Sinhalas must watch and learn. Nothing wrong in it. Enjoy the food. Don’t eat too much Kevum, that is all. Keep your stupid brain alert. Learn from mistakes. Work hard with determination. Learn to think properly. Always keep your Buddhist protective values like HIRI and OTTAPPA ( Indian Pali language).
