Please light a candle in every home on May 19th. Don’t object to doing so. It is an act of humanity to remember those who gave up life and limb for us.

REMEMBERING THOSE WHO SACRIFICED FOR OUR FREEDOM AND PEACE

On May 19th marks the anniversary of our freedom from fear, loss, terror, in ushering the new PEACE we waited for over 30 years. It was not a PEACE defined by ethnicity, religion or class. It was universal peace for all people whether they lived in Sri Lanka fearing for their lives, or others who lived overseas with family and friends in Sri Lanka, constantly worrying about their safety. Terror struck not only in the War Zone but in all parts. It struck not only the men and women in uniform but all people in civilian life in the most unsuspecting places where bombs and destruction was the way a statement was made whether it was necessary or not. Disregard for human life with a level of brutality not seen except in terrorism came close to every family.

WE CANNOT FORGET THE BRAVE MEN AND EVEN A FEW WOMEN IN UNIFORM WHO GAVE UP SO MUCH FOR SO MANY. The figures are 30,000 from the forces, 100,000 civilians in terrorist bombings and killings, and approx. 55,000 disabled through injuries. This counts all people cutting across ethnic and religious diversity.

SOME OF THOSE READING THIS HAVE GONE TO SRI LANKA AND RAVE ABOUT THE BEAUTY OF THE PLACE TODAY. IF YOU ARE IMPRESSED, YOU HAVE A MORAL RESPONSIBILITY TO REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS AND HOW IT TURNED TO PEACE TO BECOME SOMETHING TO RAVE ABOUT.

PLEASE LIGHT A CANDLE IN EVERY HOME ON MAY 19TH REGARDLESS OF WHERE IN THE WORLD YOU MAY BE, AND REMEMBER THOSE WHO PERISHED FOR US TO LIVE IN PEACE.

Do not regard this as something political that you are doing for any party or any leader. This time our heroes have to be remembered for just who they were.

At the same time let us remember all those in uniform THROUGHOUT THE WORLD who fight and lay down their life and limb as a part of their job. The decisions made to go forward with war is one of the most despicable human decisions that can ever be made. Ordering to kill in the name of war should never happen again. Those of us who can band together to prevent it where we have control should do so regardless of any other evil we have to fight. The evil of war is the most evil of all evils. Light a candle for the dead and the living who are suffering for all of us to enjoy the vacations we look forward to and boast about the grandeur of Sri Lanka today. Who did it??? Ask yourself when you light that candle.

Please share this and let us all make a universal statement to support PEACE.
Thank you to those who know me or don’t know me who follow my request. This is my firm belief.

May 19th- Our Thesiya Thalaivar rememberance ( Thuvasam ) Day !!!

  2. Sarath W Says:

This was the day the coward terrorist fat Prabha was killed. That coward forced other terrorist to swallow the cyanide capsule before capture, but did not have the balls to do it himself and was shot down like a dog.

  3. Dilrook Says:

I endorse what Anjalika says. 2009 May 19 is a victory for humanity and defeat of uncultured barbarity. It must be remembered as such. We must acknowledge that real peace was won by the barrel of the gun and not through negotiations. Attempts to deny this fact must be defeated. The world commomorates WW1, WW2 victories and there is no reason why we should not.

  4. Kumari Says:

I will be lighting a candle on the 19th and I endorse what Anjalika and Dilrook say. Our heroes made the supreme sacrifice for us and for the country.

May the triple gem bless the Commander in chief MR, his able assistant GR, all the heads and members of our armed forces, Police and Civil Defence.

  5. Fran Diaz Says:

Yes, it will be a good thing to Remember. Thank you, Angalika.

May those who died saving the Country & the People attain Nibbana. What enormous sacrifices some families have made. Can they ever be compensated !
We hope such events never need happen again. It is up to us ALL to see that it does not.

  6. Amila Says:

Timely article, thank you Anjalika for reminding the day.

We will never ever forget the day MAY 19th Anjalika. Thanks for your advice although. This will be a special day for all Sri Lankans who waited 30 long years for this day to come. To hear and see that the most wanted terrorist in the world cold blooded murderer Velupillai Prabakaran was no more was the greatest news I heard in my life. I feel sad today though because our ungrateful people forgot all those massacres, deaths, bomb blasts and cold blooded murders which brought havoc to my Motherland within a small period of five years. Fear of war is coming back again because of what this Ranil/MY3 regiment is doing by giving more and more concessions to Tamils thru the pressure of Americans and Indians. I hope the people of this land will understand the danger ahead before it’s too late and change this evil Govt as soon as possible.

We will light not one candle but millions to commemorate our heroes who sacrificed their lives to save our Motherland although this shit Govt of UNP forgot our heroes. It’s shameful and disgrace to allow terrorists to commemorate their dead by this shameful Govt on the same week as we celebrate. People should condemn this strongly without fear.

  8. Ben Silva Says:

Thank you Angalica, it is very important to remember the liberation day.

  9. Fran Diaz Says:

In the name of all those who died to save the Nation, please DO NOT allow anymore Tamil Nadu Tamil people to enter Sri Lanka. The Sirima- Shasthri Pact (1964) was not honored by TN/India and to date of the 525,000 agreed to send back to Tamil Nadu only 280,000 went. This means that around 145,000 remained behind in Lanka. So, since the TN Camps say they have around 60,000 Lanka Tamils, these people ought to stay behind in TN.

Save Lanka and all her true born People of Lanka. Lanka cannot afford new entrants, illegal migrants or refugees from other lands. At present, GoSL must concentrate on the massive CKD problem that kills many thousands of farmers each year and building up of village folk lives in all communities. Do it in the name of all who died to save Lanka.

  10. Jag Says:

Thank you Anjalika for your patriotic thoughts. Yes, all of us will be lighting up a candle on May 19th to remember all those heroes who gave their life and limb for our tomorrow. Specially remembering ”HASAKALA GAMANI KULARATHNE VEERAYAA”, the hero who represents the vast majority of poor innocent village kids who has nothing else but their lives to sacrifice in order to save our motherland…. apparently, GAMANI’S STATUE HAD BEEN REMOVED FROM THE ELEPHANT PASS ARMY CAMP BY THIS GOVT, TO PLEASE TNA AND THE TAMIL DIASPORA..!

  11. Cerberus Says:

Originally the number of so called refugees to Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka mentioned was only 60,000 refugees. Now it has swelled to 100,000. Did they reproduce 40,000 in 30 years? I think this is going to be another avenue by which illegal Dalits from India will seek to come to Sri Lanka. They can say they lost the papers and just come and get free houses, land and money to start life etc. When you have 15 million Dalits 12 miles away living in utter poverty in Tamil Nadu alone, and Sri Lanka offers free education, free health care and free houses and land what do you expect? Are our Sinhala leaders utter morons. Cannot they look a little far and see the consequences of their actions. India uses Dalits as their forward invading force to invade countries. They are kept down and in a institutionalized caste system where they have no hope and neither their children, their only wish is to get out. So they seek new pastures and migrate. Look at Malaysia, Fiji, Mauritius, Madagascar, Canada, Australia, Europe South Africa and of course Sri Lanka which is the closest. Once they go there then they import Indian goods and sell them. In Malaysia the leaders were far seeing and declared the indigenous Malays as Bhumiputra with more rights than others. Fiji banned all Indians from coming there. While Sri Lanka is always in season for the illegals! Initially they came as Tea pluckers, then as bucket carriers and then as the fighters for LTTE. During the 30 years of war they came in hoards so that when the Census was done in 2011 they found the same number as were there in 1981 even though an estimated million went to Canada, Europe and Australia. Did 30,000 of our young soldiers die to free the country of this trash. Now that they have managed to bribe the Western leaders they have spokespersons in them on their behalf including the Catholic Church which seeks converts among them. Sinhalese have no one and the current leaders are like the leaders for the Tamils working only for them. As rogue queen said the problem is Sinhala majoritarianism. She does not realize that Sinhalese are the minority with an ocean of Tamils 12 miles away. Now that Jayalalitha has been released by the appeals court (on what grounds?) she will set her sights on acquiring Sri Lanka for Tamil Nadu.

  12. SA Kumar Says:

Now that Jayalalitha has been released by the appeals court (on what grounds?) she will set her sights on acquiring Sri Lanka for Tamil Nadu- Long life to AMMA

  13. Lorenzo Says:

Some EXCELLENT news!! This was LONG OVERDUE for 6 years. I called for this in 2009 itself after SF retired.

Major General N.A Jagath C Dias WWV RWP RSP USP ndc has been appointed as the new Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army. Major General Dias who counts over 35 years of military service is the 46th Chief of Staff of the Army. He is currently serving as the Commander, Security Force – Mullaittivu.”

    – defence.lk

He played the BIGGEST role in winning the war and he deserves to be the NEXT army commander!!

He comes FIRST in LTTE’s “war criminals” list which makes him the TOP MOST war HERO.

I salute you sir and send you best wishes. It was an honor to have met you sir on several occasions.

A very BOLD and the RIGHT decision. Thank you minister of defence.

  14. Fran Diaz Says:

Some other Points to consider :

From 1981 – 2009, altogether the figures point to a total dead of 80,000 – 100,000 from SL Armed Forces, LTTE, and civilians of all ethniciites. The total dead from all sides in the Final 4 months of Civil War were roughly 15,000-20,000. These wars happened due to Colonisation + Tamil Caste problems + Cold War + Political ideologies.

All Lankans must thank former President Mahinda Rajapakse for ending this long drawn and complicated conflict. Why punish our Heroes ? It does not make any sense at all.

Re the Tamil Caste problem, Tamils of Tamil Nadu must request their government to issue NEW Birth Certificates sans Caste. Also, Sri Lanka ought to do away with the Tamil Language as a National/Official language.

Lanka must NEVER get caught in outside problems that are intractable.

  15. Lorenzo Says:

    Thank you Anjalika Silva.

The LLRC report turned winners into losers and losers into winners.

50 years from now people will say Tamil Elam army WON the war and SLA LOST. To prove their point they will say,

“the NORTH remained Tamil ONLY after 2009, SLA withdrew (as if losing the battle) from the Jaffna peninsular from 2009”.

“By 2009 SLA had 35,000 ha of HSZs. By end 2013 it had reduced to just 3,000 ha of HSZ and by 2015 reduced to 1,000 ha”.

“In 2013 LTTE formed the forst ever northern provincial council run by its POLITICAL WING the TNA”.

“Thanks to LTTE, Tamil became an official and national language in 1987”.

  16. Fran Diaz Says:

    Lorenzo,

Yes, what you say is true.

However, the UNITARY status of Lanka is what was sort after through war and that objective was achieved. But, TAMIL ONLY areas have to cease. Other communities HAVE TO go North & East in large numbers, don’t you think ? That is the next step to achieve PLUS removing Tamil Language as a National/Official Language.

Overly Westophile RW’s objectives have to be subjugated in favor of UNITARY STATUS of Lanka. And that does not include any Federal State for Tamils either.

    ———–

I would like to add that there are no winners or losers in wars. “Objective Achieved” is the winner for both sides and that is Peace and Prosperity with Human Dignity for ALL.

OBJECTIVE WAS ACHIEVED – WE HAVE A UNITARY STATE. LET US KEEP IT THAT WAY.

    * No more illegal migrants, refugees, etc to Lanka
    * Keep away from Foreign devised objectives which suit foreign countries

  17. Lorenzo Says:

    Fran,

There are winners and losers in a war.

e.g. Ellalan-Dutugemunui war the winner was Dutugemunui.
e.g. SL-Cholan war the winner was the SL king.
e.g. Elam war the winner was SL.
e.g. WW2 winners are the allies.

But the LLRC report turned winners into losers and losers into winners.
