Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has sent a letter of demand to Foreign Minister Managala Samaraweera, seeking Rs 1 billion in damages over an alleged defamatory statement the latter had made.

At a press conference last Thursday (7), Mangala had accused the recently ousted president and his family of having siphoned off funds worth more than $18 billion during Rajapaksa’s terms in power.

We believe that the Rajapaksas hold assets worth over $18 billion (approximate Rs237,933,000,000) in foreign countries,” he said, citing a report received from foreign intelligence services.

However, Rajapaksa denied the allegations in a statement issued the very next day while charging that the government was utilizing the devious means” by which false propaganda against him is being disseminated.

The letter of demand sent to Samaraweera by Attorney-at-Law Athula Priyadarshana de Silva, on behalf of his client Mahinda Rajapaksa, states that the allegations are defamatory and had caused discredit to his client.

It says that while the damages caused to Mr Rajapaksa’s reputation by the comments cannot be estimated his client will be seeking a sum of Rs 1 billion as compensation.

The letter of demand also warns that in the event Samaraweera fails pay the aforementioned sum within 21 days, legal action will be instigated against him.

Well done Mr President. You have an unblemished political career, these good for nothing fellows talk from both sides to please their pay masters.

Soon after the 2010 elections, Rajitha said that Mangala has never been in any paid employment but owns and lives in a palatial house in Colombo. Rajitha also insisted that it needs investigation as to how Mangala got that kind of money.

MR after being the President for 10 years and over 40 years as a member of parliament, still hasn’t got a house in Colombo.

    Christie,

I appreciate your broader view. We need more and more people thinking in the same way and seeing the real picture.

    Our Dearest leader Mahinda,

Please do not give up half way or do not say that I will pardon you to Mangala. If you do so, it will be betraying your supporters. Please get the money and if you do not wish to use them, create a fund which can help your supporters in trouble or citizens at large.. or else donate to the new maha chaithya construction.

  7. Indrajith Says:

I agree with Mahesh. Rs. 1 Billion is not enough. MR was the number one citizen of this coutry close to 10 years.
And MR is still the most popular person in this island. He is the savier of this country from the most ruthless terrorist organization in the whole world. To insult such a person is a blatant crime.

Those leaders don’t listen to any damn Satan or God just get rid of anyone harmful to the leader or to the nation. This type of people should be treated like that. This wicked lot in the UNP should be kicked out of office soon if not disaster for the country.

Mr President we admire you and we know about you so have faith on the people who loves you and the country in whole. Our war heroes has become dogs nowadays and terrorists has become Gods under this Jarapalanaya. We are ready to die MR.President just lead us like a true hero to wipe out our enemies to the nation.

MANGALA SAMARAWEERA SHOULD HAVE BEEN SUED FOR AT LEAST 50 BILLION USD BY PRESIDENT RAJAPAKSE for making this kind of broad statement that brings discredit to Sri Lanka and its ex-PRESIDENT, who as Commander in Chief, along with the DEFENSE FORCES brought an end to the TERROR WAR in Sri Lanka WHILE MANAGALA SAMARAWEERA SLEPT.

SHAME ON THIS GUY….HE DESERVES TO BE REMOVED FROM OFFICE….AND THE LAWSUIT SHOULD HAVE DEMANDED THAT TOO.
HIS COMPATRIOTS WHO ARE GOING ALONG WITH HIM IN THE CURRENT EXERCISE OF TARNISHING THOSE WHO WON THE WAR OUGHT TO BE SUED FOR BILLIONS AS WELL. THE LEGAL ROUTE IS WHAT WILL TEACH THEM A LESSON.

THE SUPREME COURT HAS TO BE WATCHED…its recent ruling to dismiss the FR suit against Arjun MAHENDRAN IS WORRISOME.

PRESIDENT MAHINDA RAJAPAKSE…THESE VICIOUS TRAITORS & SEEKERS OF VENGEANCE HAVE TO BE BROUGHT TO HEEL.
    THE PEOPLE ARE WITH YOU!!

What a foolish thing to say $18 billion. His (or its) figures are like LTTE numbers. First it was 20,000. Then 40,000. Then 140,000. SL economy is just $70 billion. Taking $18 billion would send the country to 2002 or somewhere. OBVIOUSLY that is NOT the case.

Next time (IF any), these TRAITORS should NOT be spared.
