Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) announced that the party will field all sitting Freedom Alliance (UPFA) parliamentarians and their electoral organisers at the forthcoming general election. This was revealed by SLFP General Secretary Anura Priyadarshana Yapa at a media briefing at the party head quarters.

He said that the party has already begun issuing the applications and all interested individuals have to collect application from the party head quarters before June 05. General Secretary Yapa also added that they are ready to face the election either under the present system or the new system to be introduced under the proposed 20th Amendment to the Constitution.

Meanwhile, all the parties representing the Freedom Alliance had a meeting with the President Maithripala Sirisena and the same will meet former President Mahinda Rajapaksa today.

This creates the risk of placing one’s name in two nominations lists (UPFA and another) resulting in both parties losing their nomination which gives the UNP a field day to win almost all seats in that district. A similar thing happened with the LG nominations list of the UNP for the CMC in 2006. UNP for the first time lost the Colombo Municipal Council. It may be a plan by the UPFA leadership to repay the UNP for helping Sirisena win the election. Mahinda’s party should be very careful in selecting and giving nominations.
