President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday told the representatives of the UPFA that he could not agree to offer nominations to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to contest the next election under under its betel symbol as the prime ministerial candidate, informed sources said yesterday.

The President, in his capacity as the UPFA Chairman, met the leaders of the parties aligned with it politically on Wednesday evening.

During the meeting, the UPFA leaders had asked about the President’s stand on the proposal to nominate Mr. Rajapaksa as the UPFA prime ministerial candidate. President Sirisena is reported to have declined to nominate his predecessor.

The President has said that Mr. Rajapaksa had served in politics for a long time as an MP, a Minister, a Prime Minister and the President for two terms, and therefore another member should be given that opportunity. President Sirisena also requested the UPFA leaders to cooperate with him as the chairman of the party to execute his next political programme .

However, the UPFA leaders, who were present, did not agree to the President’s refusal to give nomination to Mr. Rajapaksa.

The no -confidence motion against the present government led by the United National Party (UNP) and the formation of a UPFA government before the declaration of the general election were also other topics being discussed.

In the meantime, UPFA leaders met Mr. Rajapaksa in Colombo yesterday morning. According to a party leader who attended the meeting, Mr. Rajapaksa expressed his willingness to contest as the UPFA prime ministerial candidate. He had also endorsed the decision by the UPFA to move a no confidence motion to unseat the present government, and to form its own prior to the declaration of the election.

The UPFA leaders decided to announce their final stand to President Sirisena through Party Secretary Susil Premajayantha. (Kelum Bandara) – See more at: http://www.dailymirror.lk/74251/ms-rules-out-nomination-for-mr#sthash.8nMrNUAi.dpuf

Isn’t it time that the SLFP Central Committee got rid of Mr. Sirisena as Party Leader since he is standing in the way of the success of the SLFP at the forthcoming elections…?
This is a very serious situation for the SLFP as Mr. Sirisena’s loyalty to the party is now obviously secondary to his other loyalties.

In fact, by refusing to nominate Mr. Rajapakse, he is clearly conveying that he does not care if the Party gets split, and loses forever its historic and prime position as representative of the Sinhala people of Sri Lanka.

So much for “Nahee verena veranee” and the ‘selflessness’ Mr. Sirisena professed before the Presidential election!

They CAN’T because in 2005 MR changed the SLFP constitution to say if anyone from SLFP becomes president of SL he will automatically become the leader of the SLFP!!

  3. Kumari Says:

Nilwala, I fully endorse your comments.

This puppet will never ever agree to anything regarding MR for sure because he lives with hatred towards MR for not giving him the Premiership in MR’s Govt.

The best thing to do now is to sack this traitor from the party boss and appoint MR again and start organizing the party new. As long as they have Maru Sira and Choura Regina in the party they will never be able to win an election. MR is the most popular leader we have today nobody can doubt it or challenge it. Any blind can see from the crowds who go to see him on daily basis where ever he goes. He is a man with a vision not like Gestapo Ranil who acts like Hitler and do things Gestapo style. MY3 must be “OUT” and MR should be “IN” if S.L.F.P. need to win the next General elections. Take my word.

“They CAN’T because in 2005 MR changed the SLFP constitution to say if anyone from SLFP becomes president of SL he will automatically become the leader of the SLFP!!”

    Lorenzo, This is incorrect!

The presidential candidate of the SLFP gets the leadership of the SLFP according to the change to the SLFP constitution that u have referred to, not as you have interpreted it.

The current president contested from the SF’s party and the SLFP’s presidential candidate was the ex-president MR. Therefore the leadership of the SLFP had not changed automatically. It happened because the ex-president gave it to him on his own accord for whatever his reasons he had.

Your erroneous interpretation of the SLFP constitution had been peddled by others too in the past!

  6. Lorenzo Says:

    SenaD,

    You are wrong. I’m CORRECT.

    Here is IRREFUTABLE PROOF.

Mahinda ends Bandaranaike era in SLFP

In the political history of Sri Lanka, the era of the Bandaranaikes seems to have ended.

They have been pushed out of the Sri Lankan Presidency as well as the leadership of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), which they founded and continuously led for 54 years.

Last year, a determined bid by Anura Bandaranaike to succeed his elder sister, Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, as the Sri Lankan President, had failed.

The Presidency went to Mahinda Rajapaksa, a rival politician from the deep south of the island.

And now, less than a year later, the Bandaranaikes have lost yet another key political position, the Presidency of the SLFP.

On Thursday, a legal coup saw power in the SLFP going into the hands of the current Sri Lankan President, Mahinda Rajapaksa.

And by a political extension, it went into the hands of the Rajapaksa family, members of which, like the Bandaranaikes before, hold key positions in the government and the party.

“Tangalle triumphs over Attanagalle” declared The Island daily on Friday.

Tangalle is the fiefdom of the Rajapaksas, and Attanagalle is the fiefdom of the Bandaranaikes.

    Party constitution changed

On Thursday, Rajapaksa got the SLFP Central Committee to amend the constitution to make the President of the country, President of the party also, automatically.

The amendment said that if a SLFP member was the President of Sri Lanka, he or she would automatically become the President of the party also.

Thus, President Rajapaksa became the President of the SLFP, replacing Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, a scion of the Bandaranaike family and the President of Sri Lanka from 1994 to 2005.”

    SenaD,

Next time please check facts before writing because some people might trust that and take action (or not take action) wrongly.

  8. Fran Diaz Says:

How about leadership of the UPFA for MR ?
UPFA holds no constraints for MR as leader – right ?

These dud leaders who hold office now must be voted out ! Or else kiss Lanka goodbye. Put your thinking caps on, folks. Act smart and outsmart the blighters.

  9. Metteyya_Brahmana Says:

    Lorenzo,

The SLFP constitution can be changed again, and if I were MR I would attempt this first, and if that fails because of MS stacking the Central Committee with ‘his’ people that do not represent the party as a whole, I would bag the SLFP and teach MS a lesson that REAL power does not come with titles, it comes with mass support of the people. MS then ends up as leader of an empty party with about 10-15 seats in Parliament after the next election, and MR’s new party gains a majority with the other UPFA parties.

If MS refuses to make MR PM as someone who has majority support in Parliament, then MR coups MS out, and dares the US, UK, or UN to say anything about it given their support for coups in Egypt and Thailand. At least an MR coup will have the support of the Sri Lankan people, and therefore is a “democratic coup” to restore the people’s choice as PM.

  10. Lorenzo Says:

    MB,

My3 has put in place his CATCHERS in the SLFP central committee already so MR CANNOT change the party constitution again.

The second option is also NOT working because My3 simply refuses to acknowledge it.

The third option (MR coups MS out) will NOT work because for that MR’s party needs 2/3 in parliament. His party CANNOT win 2/3 today. He won 2/3 in 2010 because he won the war.

So it is a dead end. ANOTHER road must be taken to succeed. My3 HINTED what that road should be!!

  11. Lorenzo Says:

    Fran,

UPFA top leaders are from the SLFP. Most of them are with My3.

My3’s party at the election will be UPFA with 14 parties.

MR should form his own party and contest. People KNOW him.

But as My3 has already said MR will not be appointed the PM even if he win most seats in parliament. I’m not saying this My3 is saying it.

A hopeless situation. Elections CANNOT replace these crooks. OTHER MEANS must be used.

  12. Fran Diaz Says:

If most of UPFA top leaders are with MY3 still, then Lanka will deserve what it gets.

Sri Lanka in a very dangerous situation. All those 27,000 soldiers may have died in vain in defence of their Motherland as Lanka may be bifurcated ?
If that happens, the next scenario will be too sad and horrible to behold ….. the Diaspora Tamils and vested interests would have won.

    ‘Gong’ Lanka ?!

  13. Metteyya_Brahmana Says:

    Lorenzo,

It is a simple majority vote for PM, not 2/3rds. If Maithripala goes against the people’s choice as PM in the next election, he WILL be couped-out as fraud. You can’t take the people’s vote as a champion of “democracy” and “good governance” as president and then go against the vote of the people for PM because you have some personal problem with who they have chosen. If Maithripala doesn’t understand this basic fact, he probably is WAY over his head.

  14. Lorenzo Says:

    MB,

In SL the PM is NOT elected. The president (Maru Sira now) PICKS a MP as PM.

e.g. DM Jayaratna was just a MP when MR picked him as PM.

IF you want to force Maru Sira to PICK MR as PM, you have to IMPEACH the joker first because he has made it CLEAR he will NOT appoint MR as PM. For that you need 2/3.

IF only MR didn’t change the SLFP constitution, he is still the SLFP leader. He could have expelled CBK by a vote AFTER Anura died. Then Maru Sira will have to come begging to MR to get the party leadership or support him at the election. MR could have agreed SUBJECT to a condition: make me PM. IF NOT I will pull out the SLFP from supporting you.

Although I supported Maru Sira at the last election, I told a MR close guy to CHANGE the SLFP constitution before the election because IF Maru Sira wins, he will take over the party too. They LAUGHED at me. They said there is NO WAY in hell My3 could win the election. They said he LACKED personality, looks like a scarecrow and is just a sacrificial LAMB. I insisted, what if….. Then they said if MR tried to change it, everyone will think he is doing so because he fears losing the election.

But AFTER the election MR has done WELL to be very popular without any party leadership!! Today his supporters are GENUINE people.

Guess what? Now Maru Sira and CBK will FIGHT to get SLFP leadership. CBK says it is a family thing. Maru Sira says no.

Run-nil is after ILLUSIVE presidency which he tried for a LONG TIME to get but failed. Run-nil will use his LTTE CFA friends to get it. That was how he became PM in 1993 and that is how he will become the president in 2015. Mark my word.

Next time please check facts before writing because some people might trust that and take action (or not take action) wrongly.”

    Lorenzo,

I have to give it back to you with the addition “check ALL the facts related to the topic”, because you have failed to do so.

As soon as (i.e. the same day) MS declared that he would be the so called “common candidate” he was stripped of his posts and the membership of the SLFP, then he ceased to be a member of the SLFP.

Therefore he could not have automatically become the leader of the SLFP.

My own interpretation of the events following the PE is that the ex-president’s action of handing over the leadership of the SLFP to the new president could have been a case of making a virtue out of an inevitable outcome. He did claim “it was done to preserve the unity of the SLFP” and added that he has never left the SLFP making a jibe at CBK at the same time.

The president MS would be the winner had there been a struggle for supremacy within the SLFP hierarchy, because he could and would have corralled the members of the SLFP Central Committee by offering positions in the govt. to effect that change.

Alternatively, the president MS could have probably got a court order nullifying the expulsion from the SLFP. Either way, he would have won it and the ex-president would have been labelled as the man trying to split the party.

However, the current perception among the SLFP voters is favourable more to MR than MS.

  16. Lorenzo Says:

    SenaD,

    Wrong again and again.

Why do you refuse to read the link?

There is NO requirement for CANIDACY.

SLFP didn’t field ANY presidential candidate since 1988!!!

  17. Metteyya_Brahmana Says:

    Lorenzo,

The SLFP becomes irrelevant if Mahinda decides to contest from the PA and take +100 MPs with him.

And, no, you are wrong about the elected PM part – each party puts forth a PM candidate to represent their party in the general election, and if that party wins the most seats and has a majority out-right or with other parties, THEY represent the “confidence of Parliament” that MS has to cede to in ‘picking’ the PM. Otherwise, his picks just get no-confidenced out until Parliament, SC, or military gets tired of MS and pushes him aside (on behalf of the people).

  18. Lorenzo Says:

    MB,

    Dead wrong!

    Read 43 (3)

The President shall appoint as Prime Minister the member of parliament who in his opinion is most likely to command the confidence of parliament.

That was how Run-nil could become PM. In Maru Sira’s OPINION, Run-nil is most likely to command the confidence of parliament!!

FUNNY opinion of Maru Sira but NO ONE can challenge it in court. Same with DM Jayaratna. How on earth could he command the confidence of parliament!! But in the OPINION of the president he did. Same with RUN-NIL in 1993!!
