Dhaka/Guwahati,  13 June 2015: Asia-Pacific Forum of Environmental Journalists (APFEJ)  welcomed the new executive committee of Bangladesh’s national press club and expressed hope that it would engage more and more mainstream journalists based in the south Asian country in highlighting major environmental issues. The Asia Pacific media forum took it as a pride that Quamrul Islam Chowhdury, news editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha and chairman of APFEJ, was selected as the general secretary of Jatiya Press Club.

It may be mentioned that senior Bangladeshi journalist Muhammad Shafiqur Rahman was recently chosen as the president of 17-member management committee of the pioneer press club on the basis of general consensus. Other important office bearers of the Dhaka based organization include Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul (senior vice-president), Amirul Islam Kagoji (vice-president), Kartik Chatterjee (treasurer) with others.

Understanding the importance of public awareness about the relentless environmental disasters with the implication over the livelihood of millions of people in Asia Pacific region, the mainstream media organizations should take a pragmatic role and we expect Bangladesh Jatiya Press Club will encourage more  young member-journalists to report on environment related issues extensively,” said Nava J.

Thakuria, general secretary of APFEJ, headquarter of which is based in the Bangla national capital.

In a statement issued to the media outlets across Asia Pacific region, the APFEJ also appreciated the decision of new management committee of the organization to set-up a mural of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Father of the Nation (Bangladesh), with some other distinguished personalities on the press club premises, which is expected to be more green in the days to come.
