President Maithripala Sirisena has refused to give nominations to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to contest the upcoming General Election under the UPFA ticket, political sources told Ada Derana.

The party leaders of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) convened a special meeting this evening at the Presidential Secretariat, with the participation of President Sirisena.

The topic of giving nominations to the former President was reportedly extensively discussed at the meeting.

UPFA General Secretary  Susil Premajayantha stated that the President had assured that he would discuss the matter with his parliamentary group and announce his decision tomorrow (June 03).

However, political sources say that during the meeting the President had refused to give nominations to Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Rajapaksa had yesterday said that he intends to re-enter politics and stand in parliamentary elections next month.

Mr Rajapaksa lost the presidential elections to party rival Maithripala Sirisena in January.

Speaking in front of a large crowd of supporters in his home district, Mr Rajapaksa said he could not reject their clamour for him to stand.

But it was not clear which party the former president would represent.

Mr Sirisena, the new leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) which Mr Rajapaksa led for 10 years prior to his downfall, has ruled out appointing him as candidate.

In his speech on Wednesday in his home town of Medamulana, Mr Rajapaksa said that he and his supporters will contest and look to form the next government”.

Mr Rajapaksa did not say if he was aiming to become prime minister, instead choosing to invite all political parties to join hands” with him for the 17 August vote.

Last week, President Sirisena dissolved the parliament, paving the way for fresh parliamentary elections in mid-August, eight months ahead of the schedule.

How many times MR goes behind Maru Sira begging for nominations? This is shameful. STOP it now MR. Take a stand for your supporters.

Contest alone. There is NO other choice.

    Lorenzo,

I have been saying this for three months now: “WHEREVER MAHINDA GOES, THAT IS THE PARTY!” He has to understand that his voters will vote for him regardless of what the name of the party is called that he is contesting from. How many Sri Lankan voters had ever heard of the Democratic Freedom Front (DFF) that Maithripala used in January?

By waiting this long to form a new party he is compromising his chances to win. Voters cling to LEADERS, not parties!

    MB,

“Voters cling to LEADERS, not parties!”

    NOT TRUE.

My3 won because his UNKNOWN party had the support of UNP, TNA, SLMC, CWC, etc.
Same with SF. His unknown party had the support of the SAME crowd.

SLFP is going to contest against MR. That means he cannot get ALL SLFP votes.

I AGREE MR should immediately form a party and contest under it. He can contest from WW’s NATIONAL FREEDOM FRONT.

All the best MR. MORE patriots are with you this time. IF you promise to SCRAP 13 amendment, ALL patriots will be with you.

It is not that simple. Money and planning are essential. Money is with Indian Empire and Indian colonial parasites. The Third Eye the most secretive and ruthless Indian intelligence service will do the planning and coordinating and net working as they have done since 1951 in Ceylon. Sirisena the President and Anura the J V P head are heading to Japan. I will leave it to the Posters, commentators and readers.

    Lorenzo,

MR IS SLFP, and he currently has 100 SLFP MPs supporting him out of 130. These 30 MP traiters that he does not have are VULNERABLE because they are in districts like Kurunegala that MR won in January. MR can target each one of these 30 MPs with his own candidates in a new party and cross over the other 100, leaving Maithripala with NOTHING!

This is a do or die situation for the Sinhalese nation. Being the current leader of that nation, MR must take the stand. With the current mockery of democracy the person bow down to foreign money get all the support including the media. People must realise whether they want a leader who make decisions locally to the benefit of the masses or whether they are happy to go with the tie coat rogues (who are being dictated by the foreign interest).

From the very beginning I knew Sirisena’s last order before parliamentary elections is to divide the SLFP (there by Sinhala Buddhist vote, looks like he is successful in doing that). He failed to provide SLFP backing to the pickpocket in the legislature, getting the 19A passed in the original version and transferring presidential powers to the pickpocket. He could be proud that he fulfilled at least one task.

With a grass root backing like what Mahinda has, who is the party leader who doesn’t want to give nominations to him. He is a sure winner to SLFP. Sirisena does not want an SLFP win, it is now clear to the electorate.

All S.L.F.Per’s must by now should understand that Sira will never ever support the S.L.F.P. cause. He is a traitor to the S.L.F.P. from the day he joined the UNP and other traitors. When Mahinda refused Muslims and Tamils to have their own rule in their areas Sira the traitor promised them their dream lands and that’s how they left Mahinda. We should forget the party S.L.F.P for the time being and allow Mahinda to come forward on the MEP ticket. People in this country needs him at this hour very badly and he should listen to the people’s voice. Let’s start now itself to organize, canvass and face the election with Mahinda in the lead.

Do not trust traitors. Once a traitor is always a traitor. Sira/Ranil/Bandit Queen trio will fight together to stop Mahinda on the advise of West and Indian Parasites. It has already started therefore we the people of this land must get united to save Lanka from traitors within and from abroad. It’s not a joke this time.People must take it serious about foreign involvement in our affairs and should vote to Mahinda in millions to save not only the country but Sinhala Buddhists who are in danger in our own land.
