Political Victimisation of Rajapaksa Family Sets a Vicious Precedence for Future

I’m appalled by hateful comments made by a prominent local NGO activists to foreign newspapers justifying political victimisation of Rajapaksa family members. He has justified using coercion and prosecution to force Mahinda into retirement. He also proposes prosecution of his brothers, wife and children to force him to retire from politics or shut him up. This sets a very bad precedence for future governments to follow. No party stays in power forever. At most, it will be a decade and the ruling party will change. Then it will be the new ruling party to take revenge from the UNP. This is the trend he is proposing and be may unfortunate enough to live to regret it.
Every Lankan has the right to engage in politics within the law. The parliament has many MPs with alleged unlawful acts. If action is to be taken, every MP should be included. Selective justice is no justice. If the current regime indulges in selective justice, the next regime will be happy to follow.
For the nation to function as a viable democracy, a strong opposition is needed. Head hunting the Opposition using violence, coercion and prosecution turns the nation into a dictatorship. Once the trend is set it is difficult, almost impossible, to reverse. The long and hard road of slow consensus and tiring compromise efforts must be taken instead. That is how lasting changes can be made. No one has to assume supremacy of their policies that justify contravening the democratic process. Others’ view is equally important and must be given a hearing and an opportunity to be heard. 5.8 million Lankans stand by Mahinda and that is a large number to ignore.
May this be served as a warning to all those who wish to use violence, coercion or prosecution against UPFA MPs to either buy their support or force them to shut up that their actions will boomerang on them in the near future. Many will justify it then.

The NGOs are all funded/or facilitated by foreign powers to the advantage of the UNP. As such we cannot expect anything in favour of MR’s being active in politics.
But we can try to put the right thinking capacity into people’s mind by working at grass-root levels among the mass educating them of what real democracy means, and make them aware of their rights, and power.

I could not agree more with Dilrook. Thank you, Dilrook. This is a topic that has gone around in my head ever since the Hate Campaign against Mahinda Rajapakse & Family began. You have given voice to it for which I am truly thankful. I hope this article is translated into Sinhala & Tamil too.
More than anything else, the virulence with which the attack on MR & the Rajapakse Family has taken place, has made me DISGUSTED with not only the NGO person, but also the Sicko Trio who gave encouragement in that direction and turned it into a Political Game, encouraging the entire country to participate. Sure, the exchange of caustic remarks were mutual, but the attack on MR and his Family far exceeded all limits and length on decency.
The world will record with disgust later this ghastly election in Sri Lanka. It has leached away all self respect and self esteem from the country and the people. That we are Disgusted is too mild a word ! The sickness in Politics is evident now. It is all due to EASY MONEY & Favors from within and abroad.
Wither your prized Democracy, O Western World ? After Colonisation of most of the world, the western prized Democracy which was touted as the way to go, seems to have crashed on its own face in a lot of places due to bungling for power blocs, using Money and Conversions, false media and intimidation, and a host of other ploys.
Local media use the Hate Campaign against MR to DISTRACT the population from the REAL Problems they face ! I personally feel only pity and disgust toward all those who indulge in such activities, and the greatest ADMIRATION for MR & Family to have withstood such dishonest and demeaning attacks with dignity and patience, like parents toward erring children.
Let us stand up even at this late stage, forgive, and carry on a decent life for all in Lanka, with some Dignity and some Self Respect. Criticism can be done, but with good purpose and honesty.
Grow up, Hate Campaign people.
Yes, as vyasan says, we have to spread REAL Democracy at Grass Roots level with mass education on the subject.

I should say this is a very very good precedence. In fact it should have been in effect since 1948. Instead the precedence has been you “loot and break the law when you are in and let me do the same when I get in”. Both Chandrika (despite enormous corruption and violence by JR and Premadasa) and MR abide by that understanding when they took power. Unfortunately MR may have assumed the same. If this new development has been in effect since 1948 MR would have won his third term and retired as a hero. What UPFA should agitate is to have investigation of corruption by politicians retroactively to 1977 when large scale corruption and violence began.

I don’t know how you can imply that “political victimization” which is what Dilrook addresses, is a very good precedence.
Investigation any person, politico or otherwise, on good grounds of large financial malpractices is one thing, but political victimization, downright vicious harassment and insults are a whole another thing.
Also, when investigations are done by people who are truly guilty of such crimes makes any investigation a mockery.
Also, we notice that minorities appear exempt from such investigations in Lanka. Why is that ?
Also, Even the mighty west has not succeeded in eliminating corruption. Neither has China.
Corruption may be least in a Socialist state where truly good social values are taught to children at an early age. Also children learn best through example.
People are fond of saying MR should have done this and he should have done that. Why not the people in the present govt ?

Dilrook’s rationale needs much endorsement.
There’s that famous saying “the Evil that men do lives after them but the good is oft interred with their bones” where the last part of this saying has not as yet transpired but for the sake of decency and decorum it’s about time people remembered the good done to Sri Lanka by Mahinda Rajapaksa with gratitude and a bit of forgiveness for the mistakes he made as today the Snhala Nation breathes easy where there are people from all walks of life who have their freedoms and dignities restored through the good done by Rajapaksa.
Then there are people in the present administrative setup who have virtually got away with murder, deceit and corruption but cackling about the importance of suppressing Rajapaksa when their past track records are crying out for their incarceration. It needs to be emphasized that no political leader ever accomplished what Mahinda Rajapaksa did for his country which cannot be denied to appease the cheap rhetoric of flybynight opportunists whose day of reckoning will surely come.

Sri Lanka never had a viable democracy under UNP. MS/RW/CBK trio are the most ungrateful sons and daughters this country has seen. When they were in opposition under a Rajapakse government, their lives and livelihood and other activities were never threatened. The minute they grab power there is no moral justification to anything they do.

මේ එසේ පීඩාවට පත් ගොවියෙක් වූ වඩුවෙල් මංගලේෂ්වරම්ගේ හ`ඩයි.
“අපි වසර 30 කට අධික කාලයක් තිස්සේ මෙම ප්රදේශයේ සත්ව පාලන කටයුතු කරනවා. එ`ඵවන් සහ හරක් ඇති කරමින් ඉතා දුකසේ තමයි අපි ජීවත් වෙන්නේ. නමුත් දැන් වසර ගනණක සිට අපිට නිදහසේ සත්ව පාලන කටයුතු කරන්න විදිහක් නැහැ. මුස්ලිම් අය ඇවිල්ලා ඉඩම් අල්ලාගෙන වගා කරනවා. මේ වන විට අක්කර 2000 ක් පමණ අනවසරයෙන් ඩෝසර් කරලා හාලා වගා කරලා තියෙනවා. 1976 දී මෙම ප්රදේශය වන රක්ෂිතයක් ලෙස ගැසට් කරලා තියෙනවා. 2010 දීත් මෙය රක්ෂිතයක් ලෙස නම් කරලා තියෙනවා. නමුත් එහෙම තියෙද්දී මේ ආකාරයට මෙම ප්රදේශයේ වාසය කරන එක් ජන කොට්ඨාශයක් පමණක් මේ ආකාරයෙන් ඉඩම් අල්ලා ගැනීම ගැට`ඵවක්” යෑයිද වඩුවෙල් මංගලේශ්වරම් පවසා සිටියේය.
කොලාවිල් පදිංචි අලගයියා මුරුගන් මෙසේ පැවසුවේය.
“අපි සත්ව පාලන කටයුතු කලේ සතුන්ට කන්න දුන්නේ ඔය ප්රදේශයේ. දැන් මුස්ලිම් අය බලෙන් ඉඩම් අල්ලන් කුඹරු කරන නිසා අපි අසරණයි. නිළධාරීන්ට කීවාම කියනවා දේශපාලකයන්ට කියන්න කියලා. පොලිසියට කීවාම පොලිසිය ඒ අයව ගෙන්නලා කියනවා කුඹරු කරන්න එපා කියලා. නමුත් ඒ අය දිගටම කුඹුරු කරනවා. එ`ඵවන් එහෙම ඒ පැත්තට ගියොත් මරලා දානවා. ඒ අය තුවක්කු එහෙමත් තියගෙන ඉන්නේ. ඒ නිසා ඒ පැත්තට යන්නත් බයයි. අපි ආංඩුවෙන් ඉල්ලන්නේ මේ පිලිබඳ ඉතා සාධාරණ තීන්දුවක් දෙන්න කියලා. එහෙම නොවුනහොත් සත්ව පාලන කටයුතු කරන අපි අන්ත අසරණ වෙනවා.” ඔහු කීවේය.
මෙම ප්රදේශයට පසු ගිය කාලයේ සත්ව පාලන කටයුතු සඳහා ගිය 05 දෙනෙකු අතුරුදහන්වු බවද මෙම ජනයා පවසති. ඔවුන්ට සිදුවුණේ කුමක්ද? ඔවුන් කිසියම් පිරිසක් මරා දැම්මාද?. නඩුත් නැත.
“අපි ජිවත් වුනේ හරක් එ`ඵවෝ බලලා… අපේ සත්තු ඒ අය මරන නිසා හරි ගැට`ඵවක් වෙලා තියෙනවා. මේ වනකොට එම ප්රදේශයේදී හරක් බලාගන්න ගිය පුද්ගලයින් 05 දෙනෙක් අද වෙනකොටත් අතුරුදහන් වෙලා තියෙනවා. ඒ අයට මොනවා උනාද කියලා කවුරුවත් දන්නේ නැහැ. 2008 ජුලි 12 වනදා තම්බිරාසා තාමෝදරම් අතුරුදහන් වුණා. තම්බිලිවෙල්වල තම්බිපිල්ලේ රාෙ-න්ද්රන් ඇතු`ඵ තවත් පිරිසක් මේ වන විට අතුරුදහන් වෙලා තියෙනවා ඔය වට්ටමඩුව ප්රදේශයේදී. අපිට ඒ ගැන ලොකු සැකයක් තියෙනවා. පොලිසිය සහ ආරක්ෂක අංශවලට මේ පිළිබඳව පැමිණීලි කළත් තවමත් කිසිම හෝඩුවාවක් නැහැ. තවමත් ඒ අයව හොයා ගන්න බැරි වුණා. “මෙනෙවාද එයාලට උනේ. එයාලව කවුරුහරි මරලා දැම්මාද?. මේ විහදිට අපිව අසරණ කරන්නේ ඇයි?. අපිටත් ජිවත් වෙන්න අයිතියක් නැද්ද?. අපිට අයිතියක් නැද්ද නිදහසේ අපේ රැකියා කරගෙන යන්න. අපේ අයිතිවාසිකම් අපිට අහිමි වෙද්දී බළධාරීන්ගෙන්a කිසිම පිලිසරණක් අපට නැහැ.” කන්නගිගාමම් හි පදිංචි සින්නතම්බි විග්නේෂ්වරන් අපත් සමග කීවේය.
අතුරුදහන්වු අයගේ පුතෙකු වන තමොදරම් සුසි කුමාර මෙසේ අදහස් දක්වා සිටියේය.
“අපේ තාත්තා තමයි ගමේ සංගමයේ භාණ්ඩගාරික. තාත්තා වට්ටමඩුව සතුන් බලන්න ගියා ඒදා උදේ පාන්දරම. ඒ අය ගියේ බම්මි අඩියවැව කිට්ටුවටයි. ඒ ගියේ 50කට ආසන්න හරක්ද අරගෙන. එදා ගෙදරින් ගිය තාත්තා අද වෙනකම් ආවේ නැහැ. තාමත් අපි ඒ අයව හොයනවා. පොලිසි වලට හැම තැනටම අපි පැමිණීලි කළා. නමුත් තවමත් කිසිම හෝඩුවාවක් නැහැ. අපේ තාත්තා ඇතු`ඵ පිරිසට මොකක්ද වුණේ. අපිට සැක වට්ටමඩුව ප්රදේශයේ බලයෙන් ඉඩම් අල්ලාගෙන වගා කරන පිරිසයි. අපේ තාත්තට මොකක්ද වුනේ කියලා හොයලා දෙන්න කියලා අදාළ වගකිව යුතු අයගෙන් ඉල්ලා සිටිනවා.” සුසිකුමාර් කීවේය.
රාජ්ය නොවන ආයතනයක සේවය කරන කල්මුනේ පදිංචි එස්. ගනේෂ් කීවේ මෙවැනි කතාවකි.
“මේ ගමේ ජනතාවට ලොකු ගැට`ඵවක් වෙලා තියෙනවා වට්ටමඩුව ඉඩම් අර්බුදය. ඒ ජනතාව ඉතා අසරණ වෙලා තියෙනවා. මෙම පිරිස ඉතා අපහසුවෙන් තමයි සතුන් ඇති කරමින් කාලය ගත කරන්නේ. එවැනි අවස්ථාවක තම සත්වයින්ට ආහාර සපයාදීමට තිබුණ රක්ෂිත ප්රදේශය මේ ආකාරයෙන් නිSති විරෝධී ආකාරයෙන් අත්පත් කරගැනීම නිසා මේ මිනිස්සුන්ට යන එන මං නැතිවෙලා…. ඒ නිසා මෙම අසාධාරණයට ලක්වුණ පිරිසට හැකි ඉක්මනින් සාධාරණයක් ඉටු කර දෙන්න කියලා අදාළ බළධාරීන්ගෙන් ඉල්ලා සිටිනවා.” ගනේෂ් ප්රකාශ කළේය.
මේ රටේ පොලීසිය ගැන අපට පුදුම හිතේ. දේශපාලන දුර්දාන්තකම් අභියස හීලෑ සුනඛයන්සේ දේශපාලකයන්ගේ පා ලොවන නිලධාරීන් ගැන පුදුමයකටත් වඩා හිරිකිතක් සිතේ. රජයේ වන රක්ෂිත බලහත්කාරයෙන් අල්ලාගෙන ඩෝසර් දා එළිකරනතුරු බලා ඉන්නවා වන්නට පුළුවන. මේ ප්රදේශයට යන සතුන් අල්ලා මරාගෙන කනු බලා සිටිනවා වන්නට පුළුවන. එහෙත් පුදුමය නම් තුවක්කුත් අතේ තියාගෙන මිනී මරණ බවට සැක කරන පාදඩයන් ගැන, අසරණ සිවිල් වැසියන් පස්දෙනෙක් අතුරුදන් කළ බවට චෝදනා ලබන මිනීමරුවන් ගැන මේ රටේ සිවිල් නීතිය ක්රියාත්මක නොවීම ගැනය.
මිනිසුන් තුවක්කු අතට ගන්නේ තමන් වසා යන අවනීතිය, අසාධාරණය දරාගත නොහැකි මොහොතකය. ඒ කාලකණ්ණි මොහොත ඇති නොකිරීමට මේ රට කටයුතු කළ යුතුව ඇති බව අපගේ විශ්වාසය ය.
